Hope all the children stop causing us trouble!

I also have never weighed veg - I might do it if I ever reached a stall and needed to check carb creep wasn't happening.

BigBroomstickBIWI · 10/10/2012 23:32

Evening all! My goodness, this thread is moving quickly. I've only just finished work, so haven't had time to catch up properly.

First, sorry to hear so many of you are poorly. By this stage, in week 2, it is very unlikely that this is caused by carb withdrawal - so you really do have the lurgy. Look after yourselves, but try not to use feeling poorly as an excuse to start scoffing carbs!

Boobz - I'm wondering what on earth the plan is that you are doing, that would restrict your portion of steak to 2 oz? It surely can't be a low carb diet, as meat wouldn't be restricted in this way. It seems madness to restrict your food to such small portions - you will end up hungry and therefore bound to cheat. Can I ask you why you are doing it? And if it isn't low carb, - and I ask you in the nicest possible way Grin - why are you on the Bootcamp threads?! Personally I think you would find Bootcamp far more rewarding.

Viper - you say you 'only' lost 5lbs. That's fantastic! Last week wasn't your first week low carbing, so you aren't going to see the massive loss that some have reported. Don't cave in now or be disappointed. Just remember - that is 10 packs of lard. Which is a lot of fat!

NewStart. I'm sorry, but I am going to be cross with you. You have had a fabulous loss in the first week. How on earth can you now be talking about not having motivation? Actually - how dare you?! You have everyone on the rest of the thread so envious of your progress, and now you're going to throw it away by reverting to habits that you acknowledge are very, very dubious. Don't do it! Get your sensible head back on and eat properly

OP posts:
BigBroomstickBIWI · 10/10/2012 23:38

Poppy1234 - the idea behind Bootcamp is that you don't need to weigh or count anything. The whole point is to make it easier for you. However, at the very outset, it can be useful to weigh portions - just to get a feel for how much of a particular vegetable 100g actually is. In this way you can appreciate how quickly carbs can add up.

foosty Grin glad the scales are making you happier today!

LRD do not get on the scales at any time of the day other than first thing in the morning, when you are naked and have been to the loo. Otherwise all you're doing is weighing yourself with everything you've eaten and drunk.

butterfly - did you buy chopped or whole leaf spinach? I prefer the latter, and cook it like this:

  • in a bowl, put into the microwave and defrost it, then cook on high for a few minutes, till it's hot/cooked through. You will need to drain it at this stage. While it's draining in a sieve, add a large knob of butter to the bowl and crush a clove of garlic into this. Melt the butter, and then put the spinach back into the bowl, stir, season with salt and black pepper, then heat again for another minute to cook the garlic into the spinach. Lovely!

My day:

B - yoghurt + vanilla, pre-gym
L - two roasted chicken thighs
late afternoon (at research facility) parma ham, chicken, cheese, salad (no dressing - none provided!)
D - roast chicken, spinach, red cabbage and celeriac, leftover from yesterday

1 Berocca, 4 coffees (needed one this evening to keep me going!) 2 litres water

These threads move so quickly
Need to look into this fasting thing...

BigBroomstickBIWI · 11/10/2012 00:32

Never mind the fasting, how's the low carbing going? Grin

OP posts:
OliviaLMumsnet · 11/10/2012 00:41

It is going fine but am doing bootcamp lite /OliviaMN rules
which today may have included a tunnocks teacake Blush which I am pretty sure does not count as low carb by anyone's standards and I was wondering if I could make it up somehow.

NewStartSameStory · 11/10/2012 01:29

Skipping meals is my big problem. I find it far far far too easy to skip meals and restrict food. I am not in the habit of eating 2 meals a day let alone 3. Average is one and there have been weeks when 1 meal in a day has been a good day. It is hard to change that mindset in one week. I am sticking to it as much as possible and haven't cheated just finding motivation to eat difficult. Bad habits they say were not changed overnight. Two meals eaten today (fancy scrambled eggs). Same contents of food. Considering a trip to the doc. And hoping the physio can patch me up a bit tomo so I feel better. In the mean time I am on strong pain killers and bed rest. stupidly went back to normal training too soon after being restricted to recovery training

Boobz · 11/10/2012 05:12

Hi Biwi, the diet I?m doing is called The Zone. It?s very low carb and follows the science behind reducing carbs to very low limits when eating but it isn?t the same as you?re all doing in that portion control is vital too, to losing weight. I am not hungry because I have to eat 5 meals a day (my snacks are the same size as my meals). The basic tenet is to ?eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar?. It is the diet that advocates of CrossFit follow, and CrossFit requires a lot of energy, so the portion size makes sure you?re getting enough food for energy, but it is certainly a lot smaller than I used to be eating (and that makes sense ? I was eating the same portions as my DH, who is a 6?4 male! so obviously this needed to get smaller in comparison to his portions). So far I haven?t cheated (as I am allowed very small amounts of ?favourable? carbs, like some fruits and nuts) and haven?t been hungry as I am eating 5 times a day. And it feels like I could do this as a lifestyle choice rather than just a diet, as it?s so easy to follow and predominantly made up of meat and veg, which I love.

I am 11 days in and have just weighed myself and have lost 7lbs. I am starting at 129lbs so I think that is a great result. So that?s mainly why I?m doing this diet ? it?s low carb which I totally back all the science for, keeping me sated all day, and not quite as restrictive as the bootcamp. And it?s producing results! Plus my husband?s doing it too, so it?s easier to do together (he is a CrossFitter, that?s why he has chosen this diet).

If am doing the same diet to you by about 95%, just eating 5 times a day and smaller portions instead of 3 unlimited meals... does that mean I can?t stay? Sad I?ve been really enjoying being here and getting to know everyone and losing weight together Smile

sybilfaulty · 11/10/2012 06:22

Hello. Just a quick one whilst the bath is running. So tired after my long day yesterday. Ate a lot in the day as I was tired, but all LC and looking forward to a calmer day today. Hope everyone is doing well.

TellMeLater · 11/10/2012 07:25

Morning all

Fastings finished for another week, thankfully. Looking forward to some lovely low carb food. I have some bacon and leeks in the fridge that need using, so maybe an omelette for breakfast after my run or maybe MsRinky's cheeky mini frittatas.
Low carbing has made me a lot more careful about leftovers - more than ever my food is made from scratch, even down to whisking up some mayo and the effort involved makes the food seem all the more precious, my freezer is full of little tubs of leftovers - perfect for lunch.

BigBroomstickBIWI · 11/10/2012 08:05

Boobz - you absolutely can stay! I just wondered why on earth a low carb diet would restrict the amount of meat you can eat. If it's working for you, then who I am to criticise? Grin

NewStart - sorry you're not feeling so good. But please, please, please don't throw away what you have already achieved. You're right, a new habit take some time to form, but if you give in now, then there's no way you will establish better eating patterns.

Olivia - you have read Bootcamp rules, haven't you? Don't come moaning to me when the scales won't budge ... Wink

sybil morning - hope you have a better day today

TellMe - I love knowing that my fridge is full of lovely stuff that I can eat, as opposed to looking at cupboards full of stuff that I can't!

And for me, the scales are up by a pound this morning Angry. The only thing I can think of is that my meals at the research facility may have contained more sugar than I realised in the salad dressings/ingredients. And yesterday I ate more than I would normally - and later at night too. So hopefully it's a temporary blip.

I admit I'm a lurker and enjoy looking at ideas for low carb meals that I can tweak to work with my diet

BigBroomstickBIWI · 11/10/2012 08:17

You aren't a lurker - you've posted several times! I can see you ... Grin

Sticking with it but going to have good and bad days. Trying hard as this has to work. I don't expect great weight loss and I will actually be surprised if the scales move at all. But new habits are being formed and I am have been resisting a multitude of temptations that are in the house. Lots of little steps in the right direction. But yet again very little sleep last night. And ds is poorly (but not poorly enough to be off school) and in a vile vile mood. Going to be long day

halfthesize · 11/10/2012 08:29

Morning all just wanted to say have a great day everyoneGrin

I have woke up 1lb down which has made me very happy as came on yesterdaySmile

Off to do a little retail therapy whilst the builders continue doing destroying the family bathroomWink

WineGless · 11/10/2012 08:36

Nsss - keep posting. We are here to support you through the bad days and rejoice with you on the good days.

I saw two people at work yesterday who haven't seen for ages who were complimenting me but more importantly they said that I looked like my old self.

I will post my story later I think but I truly credit Bootcamp for saving my marriage and my mental health

Keep going those who are finding it difficult but it's important to br honest about what you are eating and drinking. then BIWI can get her big stuck out and shout at us
