Hello all v interesting discussion on rules of boot camp... Need to read more closely

Not a great weekend as was with grandmother who has had gallbladder removed and therefore everything is v low fat. She is also a vodka and tonic fiend so a few too many of those were consumed and I also ate too much chocolate though it was 90%. Managed to avoid the (numerous) cakes on offer though at local village fair which was a huge feat as they were all homemade and looked utterly delicious!

Don't expect any loss (possibly gain) this week but that's ok as gearing up for boot camp next week anyway

sybilfaulty · 27/08/2012 21:13

Am making curry for supper with cauliflower rice for me and real rice for dh. Yum. Am loving all the veg on the diet.

When do you think Bootcamp proper will start? Am going to ditch the wine etc tomorrow but not back to school for another week so need to keep on straight and narrow in meantime.

BIWI · 27/08/2012 21:16

Eyes - just be aware how many artificial ingredients you're consuming with all that tonic. It may be carb-free, but that doesn't mean it's desirable. And - for some people, even if it's artificially sweetened, your body can still produce insulin, as it responds to the sweetness of the taste.

WillieWaggledagger · 27/08/2012 21:17

Eyes do you mean tonic water or carbonated or soda water? Tonic water is v sugary (unless you had slimline of course)

MrsHerculePoirot · 27/08/2012 21:18

frumpet I also have about 5/6 stone to lose and teddy is my hero too on that front!!!!

The tonic water from waitrose has no carbs in it :)

I checked :)

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 27/08/2012 21:26

Have just bought IPD and IPD Cookbook from Amazon. Bought them in actual book format as wanted the pictures, but I am spoilt by my Kindle and want them now!

BIWI · 27/08/2012 21:56

... just be aware of the artificial sweetener thing, Willie

Viperidae · 27/08/2012 22:12

Hello all

I have a huge amount of weight to lose (about 8st) and am menopausal to boot, it's all so much that I can't think in terms of diets or total weightloss goals, I have to make babysteps towards a healthier lifestyle so have started using the Bootcamp guidelines and using recipes from Idiotproof, Atkins and a low carb cookbook.

Can I please just ask a couple of questions?

Has anybody else felt a bit lightheaded? I am not starving hungry but feel empty, a touch nauseous and a bit lightheaded. Does it pass?

I notice it says to avoid processed foods. I don't eat cheese so often put eggs with sausage, bacon, ham, smoked fish, etc for breakfast. What else should I have?

I started last week and have lost my first 6lbs Smile which has brought me back into my "Shit I'm fat" range from the "Oh fuck, how did that happen?" range I started in (I had reached my fattest point ever Sad)

AuntieMaggie · 27/08/2012 22:32

I'm drinking a lot of sparkling water just because it has some flavour to it and it isn't squash which i usually drink at home because our water is really hard round here and chemically. I drink loads in work though as they have a mains filter.

ilovemyteddy thats a fantastic loss. Fingers crossed I can get rid of my 30 kg (60 odd lbs)!!!

MegTheCat · 27/08/2012 22:33

Hi. I quite like the rules as they are - but dont feel obliged to follow them all the time... As I mainly access the thread on my phone it would be nice if they were a bit shorter as they appear on every page. But obv more important for newbies to know what its all about. Maybe have a short version on the ongoing thread with a link to a longer version elsewhere? Might be an idea to recommend further reading eg ipd or dr briffa.
On the eating lots of fat thing, apart from any more scientific reason, when you cut out carbs you are also not eating the fat that goes with them eg in cake and biscuits, butter on bread. So even if you are cooking with more butter, you arent necessarily having more fat than before.
I went shopping today - a bit spur of the moment, forgot that zillions of other people might have same idea on a wet bank holiday. Anyway really happy to try on size 14s which fitted and looked good. Half a stone mqkes a big difference. I ended up buying 2 nice new suits so will be ditching my size 16 one now.

AuntieMaggie · 27/08/2012 22:40

Hi Viperidae

Congrats on your loss!

Yes to lightheadedness - drink plenty of water and make sure you're eating plenty. You shouldn't feel hungry.

Perhaps post a typical days food and then you can get some advice?

MegTheCat · 27/08/2012 22:42

Welcome viperidae. You have done so well to lose 6lb already! The lightheadedness sounds like what gets called "carb flu" and yes, it will pass if you just keep going - after the second week you should feel fine.

BIWI · 27/08/2012 23:40

MegTheCat - it's not about eating more fat because you're cutting things out! You need to positively, actively search out and eat more fat. So when you eat meat, you are eating fattier cuts, or you are eating it with fattier sauces - such as creamy sauces. When you are eating veg, you are adding butter. When you are eating salad, you are eating oily dressings.

Viperidae - you do need to watch how much processed stuff you're eating. They contain carbs, as well as all manner of undesirable ingredients. Why not just eat eggs on their own? Scrambled, boiled, poached or in an omelette?

If you're lightheaded, then eat something. Make sure you're eating salt, and include foods like avocado and salmon in your diet, so that you are getting enough potassium.

MegTheCat · 28/08/2012 00:18

Sorry Biwi, I obviously didn't express that very well as I am totally with you on eating plenty of fat.

Thegoddessblossom · 28/08/2012 06:14

Too immature I've just done the exact same thing.....Grin

hazchem · 28/08/2012 08:40

It's really interesting reading more about the rules and I like the list you posted BIWI

In regards to water Briffa says that when blood is more diluted fat release from fat cells is enhanced. He sites a couple of studies. Would you like the references? I assume they will be behind pay walls but maybe not?

I am going to have a proper read back over the thread too but wondered if you thought having a google doc with the rules might be a way to get around having to copy and paste it in the new thread each week. I certainly don't see why we can't have a new thread a week. I probably wont be able to participate much from october as moving but it will be good to just come and have a quick read. I do find others stories so inspiring also the food tips ect.

BIWI · 28/08/2012 09:00

Hurrah, Meg!

Yes please to those links, hazchem.

Good idea, too, about Google docs (although I have no idea how to do one!)

Viperidae - I forgot to say congratulations on your first week's loss! Thanks I am also menopausal (I think I am technically in or past it now, as it's a year since I had a period), and it hasn't stopped me losing weight. I was very keen to lose weight for the very reason that everyone says it's harder to keep the weight off when you are past the menopause.

Netheregions · 28/08/2012 09:03

Morning all, I've been engrossed in the thread since dp and ds left the house for their respective schools... I should be preparing for lessons but there's been so much activity since I posted last!

so BIWI, welcome back from your holidays (and all other returners too) and thank you for the discussion on the bootcamp rules...

It's so great to have found a place I can come to where others are thinking the same way as I do about their food, health and nutrition.

I gave away my India and Neris IPD book... really wish I hadn't but at the time I thought my friend's need was greater than my own - of course I should have remembered that the impulse to change has to come from yourself and not by way of well meaning friends... friend still unhappy about how she looks and suffering from ill health... book languishing on shelf getting dusty

Netheregions · 28/08/2012 09:04

and hello to Viperidae!

DizzyBeeisSchoolShoeShopping · 28/08/2012 09:09

Hi...Humphrey suggested this thread. I need to lose a load of weight (5 stone...) but I am really struggling with the motivation.

BIWI · 28/08/2012 09:12

Welcome DizzyBee! Plenty of help and support here and, hopefully, lots of inspiration as well.

And lots of lovely recipes here as well

BIWI · 28/08/2012 09:31

I have been having a go at Google Docs:

Bootcamp Rules

Can someone see if this works? (these are the original rules, without any amends so far)

Medal · 28/08/2012 09:39

BIWI it works great for me, looks good! Will you put something about eating a bit more salt on food on this woe in the amended version?

clarabellabunting · 28/08/2012 09:44

Feeling very happy today as at my weigh-in this morning I saw a 9 on the scales for the first time in YEARS. It was 9st 13lb 8oz so only just under 10st but those few ounces make all the difference psychologically!

I registered on the Atkins website a couple of weeks ago and then last week, I got a package in the post containing a free Atkins Endulge Milk Chocolate Crispy Bar. I know the Bootcamp rules say not to eat Atkins bars but I couldn't resist and it was bloody lovely (only 2g net carbs). I then googled them to see how much they cost and where sold them (just out of interest... Blush) and found that a tiny 60g bar costs £1.54 from Boots! Definitely won't be indulging in those regularly due to cost alone.
