Bootcamp Week 10 - Pretty Perfect!

Morning campers!

Today's sermon is about cheating. There's been plenty of it along the way and there will be plenty more of it in the future.

It is important to accept that this is and is going to be a fact, as (hopefully) this is about a way of eating, rather than a diet. That means that sometimes there will be occasions and circumstances where it's impossible to keep the carbs down. The classic is when you're invited to dinner and your hosts serve you something 'forbidden', like pasta or rice.

Every now and then you will find that you also have a 'fuck it' moment. Where, for whatever reason, you eat something you shouldn't. It happens.

So.

If you're going to do it, do it right!

If circumstances are beyond your control - e.g. the dinner party - don't stress about it. If you've deliberately gone off piste, don't feel guilty about it. Enjoy the moment while you're in it.

What is absolutely critical is what you do next.

Beware that you will crave carbs and don't let yourself spiral out of control into a mammoth carb fest! Make sure that the 2-3 days immediately afterwards are strictly low carb, and drink plenty of water. And avoid the scales for the next few days!

Here endeth the lesson.

Well at least it's only two posts and not two volcanoes...

FreudianSlipper · 20/06/2012 00:14

yes please would like to be added to spreadsheet

i weigh 11st 10lbs,

today for breakfast i had 2 eggs poached in tomatoes with a little oregano and 2 cups of tea

lunch 3 frankfurters with salad

dinner 2 ssausages (black farmer low in carbs) with peppers cooked with tomatoes and chilli with steamed green beans and brocli

snacks some peanut butter with celery and a babybel

that is quite a lot Hmm

had about 5 cups of tea and 3 glasses of water, not enough

i know my down fall is too much milk (i use lactose free) about 20g of carbs in the milk. i would not usually have frankfurter and sausages in one day but was feeling bit pants and cba to cook

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/06/2012 07:15

I need to have more water I know.

mummyduff · 20/06/2012 07:39

Morning All and welcome newbies.

FreudianSlipper be careful with the tomatoes they are very carby! I drink around 3-4 litres of water a day and 2 cups of coffee made with full fat milk. Good luck for todaySmile

Well just weighed myself and I have lost another 1lb, very happy as this takes total to 15lb loss Grin Grin

Breakfast - hard boiled egg

LackaDAISYcal · 20/06/2012 07:46

Another diet cola addict here frankie, in my case Pepsi max. I really struggle to give it up.

jan2011 · 20/06/2012 08:20

Good morning..well done on your first day freudian slipper.

15lb loss is fantastic mummy im sure you are so chuffed! :)

well i haven't let on to dh about this WOE. he knows ive just changed what im eating, and sees the double cream in the fridge and im sure he's thinking what the ???! and i know he was trying not to hold back the comments when he saw me adding butter etc. as usually im a fat free freak. he is very overweight and is very reluctant to ANY type of diet. so my plan is to incorporate him into this WOE without him realising. he loves good food so it shouldn't be too hard - only prob is what he is eating the rest of the day....

i think i have gained. i had a bad day on tues, and since i ate lots of cheese to make up for the carb craving, and i feel rather bloated. im not going to worry about it, as long as i remain carb free i will go easy on myself and get back into the swing of it soon hopefully - will weigh tomorrow.

frankie4 · 20/06/2012 08:23

FiddleDe - I have just weighed myself and my starting weight is 152 pounds, not 154. Would you be able to change it on the spreadsheet? Otherwise I will have already lost 2 pounds this week already and it won't give me the incentive to try! Thanks

FiddleDeFat · 20/06/2012 08:30

Changed. Though I would have taken the extra 2lb loss for the week!

FiddleDeFat · 20/06/2012 08:36

Just waiting for my sausage and egg muffins to cook for breakfast. I've got 12 days til my DS's 4th birthday and an influx of relatives. I would really like to get down to 13 stone by then. So 12 days, 11 pounds - I wonder if I can do it!?

BIWItheBold · 20/06/2012 08:37

Welcome, FreudianSlipper! Don't worry about eating too much - on this WOE you should not be hungry (you'll soon find that once you get into ketosis that your appetite is significantly reduced - this is to do with keeping your blood sugar levels much more stable, such that your body isn't releasing so much insulin).

In fact, with this WOE, the mantra is 'if you're hungry, eat!' As long as you're eating low carb stuff, and snacking on the right kind of foods, you will be fine.

As you say yourself, frankfurters and sausages on way day are not great - just keep an eye on how much processed food you're eating.

jan is there a particular reason why you haven't told your DH about what you're doing? It's always better to have support from those around you. Do you think he will try and rubbish this WOE? If he's overweight then he will definitely benefit from joining in as well, in which case explaining to him how it works can only help both of you!

Yesterday was my last day 'off'. Following on from my time in Rome and then in Athens, I haven't really been especially low carb. My food choices have been OK, but there have been too many days when I've been out for a drink. Yesterday I took DH to the Oval to watch the England vs West Indies cricket ODI - it was my Christmas present to him. I took a picnic, as the food available to buy there is the usual (fish and chips, pizza, burgers, etc), but we did enjoy some wine in the sunshine - and then when we came home in the evening (to watch the football, obviously!), we had an Indian takeaway. I didn't have rice, as per usual, but I did order a curry in sauce, and it had a lot of onion in it - and I don't know what else would have been in the sauce.

So all that is now 'done', and I'm back on track. I had a gym session yesterday, have another one tomorrow and - because I've missed three over the last couple of weeks, will be having 3 rather than 2 for the next 3 weeks, so that will keep me on track as well.

I have deliberately avoided the scales, as I know the results will not be great, but I can tell from my clothes that things aren't too bad. Today is back to Bootcamp for me, with my next weigh-in on Monday, so I'm back on track with you all.

Morning all this is the first post from me this week i'm full of cold and full of spots I'm feeling rather sorry for myself. Too much Processed food, too much cheese not enough Green vegetables and not enough f water. Slap on the wrist and back to Bootcamp

On the plus side I wore a dress to work on Monday and got lots of compliments about how much weight I've lost however am not feeling very good about myself this week.my scales are buggered so. Can't weigh in this week but I do feel like I've put weight on.

catinboots · 20/06/2012 09:10

Morning all!

BIWI - I ate boiled eggs before i ran yesterday. Think I will have a day off today and then run tomorrow.

I'm on day 3 and not really feeling hungry which is great. I'm also sleeping better. Is that normal??

I just had the most heavenly breakfast. Griddled, buttered asparagus with parmesan shavings and a poached egg. Yum.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 20/06/2012 09:18

Morning all Mummyduff15lbs - that is fab.

FreudianSlipper you are the same as me, i'm 11st 10lbs.

I have had scrambled egg with cheese and ham this morning.

I have had NO CHOCOLATE FOR 7 DAYS!!!!

I'm not even having my morning cup of tea which i have not been able to function without for years. I don't feel like i need the sugar to wake me up anymore.

catinboots · 20/06/2012 09:22

Are we allowed sugar free jelly if we get a real craving for something sweet??

I saw some sugar-free Hartley pots in the supermarket yesterday - only 0.4 carbs per pot

teaandthorazine · 20/06/2012 09:25

Morning all

Have stopped feeling sorry for myself, back in the zone today Smile

However... today my dp moves in with me officially (which is a good thing, obv) but oh my god that man can eat, and most of it shite. He is absolutely addicted to sugar (though he denies this) and whenever he's here the fridge magically fills with sugary yoghurt, milk chocolate, etc. He is a fiend for puddings. He's also always on at me to eat fruit and cannot understand why I don't scarf down satsumas and bananas all day if I'm trying to eat 'healthily'!

On the plus side, he likes his veg, and meat, and fry-ups, and doesn't drink a lot. And he's lovely Wink

sybilfaulty · 20/06/2012 09:27

Well done to all the losers here! Very inspiring.

Had a lovely asparagus omelette yesterday wiht a bit of parmesan. And weirdly not hungry again today. My jeans feel looser too, since monday. Is that possible?

I have not had anything sweet for 10 days now. Feel great. Am very tired though but that coudl be because work is a nightmare rather than this WOE. Should calm down next week, so I can start exercising in earnest again. Hurray!

Am used to black tea now, but still have one coffee a day with soya milk. Tolerable. Just.

Have a lovely sunny day everyone.

BIWItheBold · 20/06/2012 09:27

catinboots - depends how many weeks in you are. Really, we're trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so if you're early on in the process then I would say 'no'. However, long term, we need to be realistic. Those low-carb/low-sugar jellies are quite nice. But they contain artificial sweeteners, I think - so go easy with them.

Re this week's sermon on cheating - I have c+p a bit from teaandthorazine's post on the weigh-in thread, to demonstrate exactly what can happen when you hit that Fuck It moment:

"The weekend wasn't bad, and today started off okay. Usual breakfast, then out to lunch with friends who are both pregnant so no booze. I eschewed the bread, the pizza, the pasta; had olives, chicken and pancetta salad, loads of fizzy water and mint tea.

And then a BLOODY PUDDING. Why? Felt awful, absolutely sick and bloated and gross. Came home and had to lie down for an hour. And then when I woke up I had Pringles, Jaffa cakes, chinese takeaway, red wine and two - count 'em! - TWO big slices of ds's birthday cake that I DON'T EVEN LIKE."

If you're going to cheat - do it mindfully and do it with stuff you will at least enjoy eating!

Morning! Just checking in after a week away in Cornwall and away from the scales. Food choices were overall ok apart from a bit of alcohol and about 5 Rick Stein chips (which were so not worth it!), and I found myself having lots of dairy in Greek yoghurt and cheese as snacks.

I weighed myself this morning and I am down from before I went by about 2lb to 117lb. I know I have posted about this before but my overall loss since starting this WOE has been very slow though as I am on week 6 and have only lost a total of 7lb - is this rubbish? I have not got a lot I want to lose though so maybe this is why.

On the good side I have noticed the weight I have lost seems to have gone from my waist and muffin top which were my problem areas, I now have quite a defined waist which I am thrilled about!

Last night we arrived back and due to no other food in the house I just had two plain grilled burgers and cheese - OH used the word 'anorexic' which I was not too happy about. It is very hard to convince him that I am actually eating enough in this WOE. And feel better for it.

A question for those who are exercising! I am usually fairly active and like to go running. However while I seem to have enough energy for day to day activities I am finding it difficult to summon my energy to take myself for a run. I went for a long bike ride on holiday and seriously flagged on it, and I am sure I would not have usually had I been eating carbs??

Well done to everyone and good luck to the new joiners :)

WillieWaggledagger · 20/06/2012 09:35

Cat it's not the worst thing in the world to have the sugar free jelly but in the long run you'll do yourself more good by not giving into the cravings. I'm really trying at the moment to relinquish my perceived 'need' for sweet things. Artificial sweeteners really aren't good for you either

BIWItheBold · 20/06/2012 09:45

Shimbo - given that the average woman comes back from holiday 7lbs heavier, I think that's a brilliant result!

Long term, sustainable weight loss should be 1-2lbs, and you have achieved that - despite drinking alcohol!

But if you're worried about it being less than you expected, list out for me what you've been eating and I'll try and help you.

And re exercise, I posted about this recently. The body will transition away from using carbs for energy towards using protein/fat - what are you eating before you exercise?

BIWItheBold · 20/06/2012 09:52

I haven't had the chance to listen to this podcast but this is about someone who is a serious exerciser who is also a committed low carber.

teaandthorazine · 20/06/2012 09:53

Yes, let me be a dismal lesson to you alllllllll.

I don't really know what happened yesterday, tbh. Usually, when I do cheat, I'm very mindful and it's all okay. But yesterday, I dunno... that pudding was evil.

Actually... have just remembered it was called Chocolate Nemesis - so it's not as if I wasn't warned! Grin

Shimbo · 20/06/2012 10:07

Thanks BIWI as always for your support and advice Grin. Before I did the cycle ride I had some Greek yoghurt for breakfast. Snacked on nuts and cheese during the ride which was around 3 hours, and had plenty of water.

Overall my day to day eating goes something like this.

B: 2 scrambled eggs with butter or full fat greek yog with blueberries
L: Big green salad with some protein (fish/cheese) dressed with oil
D: Grilled fish or meat with lots of veg or salad plus some oil or butter

Snacks: I just can't do without having a few nuts, Greek yoghurt, a spoon of peanut butter, or a bit of cheese. Perhaps to keep my fat levels up?

Drinks: 2 coffees with a drop of fullfat milk, rest is water or herbal tea.
