Bootcamp Week 10 - Pretty Perfect!

Morning campers!

Today's sermon is about cheating. There's been plenty of it along the way and there will be plenty more of it in the future.

It is important to accept that this is and is going to be a fact, as (hopefully) this is about a way of eating, rather than a diet. That means that sometimes there will be occasions and circumstances where it's impossible to keep the carbs down. The classic is when you're invited to dinner and your hosts serve you something 'forbidden', like pasta or rice.

Every now and then you will find that you also have a 'fuck it' moment. Where, for whatever reason, you eat something you shouldn't. It happens.

So.

If you're going to do it, do it right!

If circumstances are beyond your control - e.g. the dinner party - don't stress about it. If you've deliberately gone off piste, don't feel guilty about it. Enjoy the moment while you're in it.

What is absolutely critical is what you do next.

Beware that you will crave carbs and don't let yourself spiral out of control into a mammoth carb fest! Make sure that the 2-3 days immediately afterwards are strictly low carb, and drink plenty of water. And avoid the scales for the next few days!

Here endeth the lesson.

i didn't do very well yesterday, had toast and biscuits, think it was out of pure exhaustion with so many sleepless nights at the minute with the baby. feel awful, and am back on track today.

vnmum · 19/06/2012 11:29

just done the callanetics workout people have mentioned on here. It didn't feel like I was doing much while doing it except for the pelvic rotations at the end when I broke a sweat Smile I can feel my legs and abs now though. Lets hope it helps with getting those inches off my waist.

Had 2 boiled eggs with butter and coconut oil this morning and am going to have some belly pork slices with sauted mushrooms for lunch.

I am trying really hard to resist the strawberries and cream that are sat in the fridge especially as they are going to need eating up soon. I might have to puree them and freeze it for use as a sauce for the kids (the only way they will eat strawberries). Now I'm trying to cut out the dairy it has made me realise how much I rely on it for snacks.

Hello, please may I ask for some advice? I've just started a low-carb/paleo diet after reading Escape The Diet Trap by Dr John Briffa. I'm on Day 4 and have lost 4lbs - it's uncanny! Still a long way to go, though - am now 11 stone 1, at 5'2". I'm bf 3 month old DD but my milk supply doesn't seem to have been affected. I'm eating meat, fish, eggs, butter, cheese, olives, olive oil, nuts, seeds, berries, Greek yoghurt, green veg, tomatoes etc. My tiny cheat is having milk in tea, but am trying to stick to 2 cups a day.

However, the last 2 mornings I have woken up feeling really rough - hot, sweaty and shaky. I think this is partly because on both occasions it had been 12 hours since my last meal (ie, last night ate strawbs and Greek yoghurt at 8.30, then had breakfast at 9.45 this morning, because DD was up from 4.20 to 6 and then slept til 9.30). I think it's sugar withdrawal as well, though. Is this normal? Does it go away? How fast will it go away?

This thread is inspirational, especially the recipes! It is great to get new ideas for things we can eat. DH is doing the diet too and hasn't weighed himself, but has gone down a couple of belt notches already, and his love-handles look so much smaller.

Snapespeare · 19/06/2012 12:17

breakfast 2 hard boiled eggs. snack - 3 slices cold meat. going to go and dig my new allotment tonight and maybe start couch to 5k again go for a run.

leanbh My daughter is vegan, DS2 is vegetarian. I feel your pain. I make her roasted veg with a pot of sainsburys morrocan cous cous thrown through it - the cous cous is quite carby though so you could substitute for feta/halloumi and some chopped chilli?

Thegoddessblossom · 19/06/2012 13:25

Lunch - 2 hard boiled eggs, cucumber, chicken slices, olives and salad leaves, tuna and basil mayo. Am very full.

BettySuarez · 19/06/2012 14:13

Hello TurtleDoves and welcome on board. I also experienced similar symptoms to those that you describe and I am convinced that it was sugar withdrawal symptoms - but stick at it because it does get better and you will feel so much better in a few days from now.

I am sure that other more experienced woe'rs will be along to give you advice on anything else you need. Smile

leanbh21 · 19/06/2012 14:49

turtledoves I felt dreadful the first few days, especially in the morning but it passed after day 3.

snapespeare that sounds good. Thanks. I think I'm just feeling a little lost when essentially ALL of my usual dinner ideas are unsuitable or at very least need major adjustments. Probably doesn't help that DH has to eat low fat (high cholesterol) so I've been making two meals a day for the past 10 days. At least our DCs are forced happy to eat what the grown ups do!

mummyduff · 19/06/2012 15:05

Hi All, loving the sun being outGrin

Checking in after work, struggling at the moment to get to the gym, which in turn is making me quite moody, who knew I would end up addicted to the gymSmile

Breakfast was boiled egg and lunch was cheese omelette with green salad.
5 pints of water down already, so thirsty today!
Dinner will be fish with green veg and more water, also may have a vodka lime and soda whilst watching the footie laterWink

LackaDAISYcal · 19/06/2012 16:34

Feeling dog rough here :(
I didn't experience this back in week 1 as I had been cutting down gradually during the two weeks prior to bootcamp. and it's scary!! I may have to eat something carby as I'm working later and out driving and wouldn't feel safe like this. And then start again on Thursday as I have four days off in which to feel like shit!

Bleargh :(

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 19/06/2012 16:43

Well after feeling awful and ready to stuff with carbs on Sunday on day 6 now and i feel great.

Had an ikea breakfast this morning, no beans or has browns, double bacon though!

I'm not bloated, i feel better waking up and i'm losing weight!

Going to weigh again tomorrow, day 7.

Have been very good so fingers crossed

Jins · 19/06/2012 16:57

There's quite a bit of evidence to suggest that low carb diets are beneficial for high blood cholesterol levels leanbh21

I brought my levels down significantly through dietary changes and it wasn't in any way low fat!!!!

I haven't got time to find the references at the moment but Barry Groves has done quite a bit of research into it. His website is www.second-opinions.co.uk/

Creamtea1 · 19/06/2012 17:15

Not sure whether this question needs a new thread (please tell me to go and do so if you feel answer is yes!) - does anyone know if there is any reason why a woman (not me, ahem) can't continue to eat low carb while a) trying to conceive and (more importantly) while b) pregnant?

leanbh21 · 19/06/2012 17:52

Thanks Jins I'll have a look at that. I think he'd be open to it, just difficult to change around the eating habits he's had for the past few years. Feels weird enough me eating fats and I've no reason to think I should especially stay away.

I have just one thing to say about dinner - flaxseed pizza YUM!!

Off to the gym to try my hardest class - haven't done it since starting LC so slightly nervous!

frankie4 · 19/06/2012 20:14

Hi all, been reading through some of the boot camp threads and wondered if it is too late for me to join? I am good at starting diets but after a week or so I get fed up and start raiding the cupboards. So I think I will do well with the support on this thread. I don't drink much alcohol, my real downfall is snacking, i will eat anything! I have not tried a low carb diet before, and I love meat and eggs so maybe this will be the start of a new me Smile

So if I could join you all it would be great. I weigh 154 pounds and would like to lose a stone over the summer. I see that this thread has been going on for 10 weeks. How much longer will it be going?

BIWItheBold · 19/06/2012 20:15

Welcome! Anyone can join us at any time. I have no idea how long it will run for - just as long as there are people doing it/prepared to offer support, I guess.

That's great. Will I be added to the spreadsheet?

Also, a few questions. I can't imagine having time to make eggs for breakfast but I do like Greek yoghurt, although I normally have it with honey. What else can I put on it?

And I love diet coke. Can I not drink it? Sad

BIWItheBold · 19/06/2012 20:39

Boiled eggs take hardly any time! Nor do poached or scrambled. You could always make hard boiled eggs and mash them with mayo, do this the night before?

If you're having yoghurt, be careful - dairy can impede weight loss for some people. Obviously you can't have it with honey, but try putting a little bit of vanilla extract in it. You only need a little. Waitrose also sell one that doesn't have sugar in it - check the label for this.

Diet Coke is not allowed on Bootcamp for three reasons:

  1. we're trying to break the sweet tooth habit
  2. it's full of artificial sweeteners - the aim of Bootcamp is to focus on fresh/pure/unprocessed foods
  3. some people respond to sweet things as if they were sweetened with sugar, and their body produced insulin anyway (which will cause you to lay down fat)

hello

joinng you all. on second day of low carb eating plan. i want to lose 3 stone, need to lose 2 very quickly

FiddleDeFat · 19/06/2012 20:48

Hi frankie4. I've added you to the spreadsheet, so you just need to make a start and then add your updated weight to the spreadsheet next Monday, which is our weigh-in day.

And welcome also to FreudianSlipper. Shall I add you to the speadsheet too? If so, just post your starting weight (or if you would rather not say we can index it at 100).

Are you not weighing in this week then BIWI? Were you that bad? Grin

Yes I understand about the diet coke, I guess it is my only real vice, and one wo no calaries. But I am very bloated at the moment so cutting it out will prob do me good.

Hi FreudianSlipper - what did you eat today?

frankie4 · 19/06/2012 20:56

Thanks FiddleDeFat :)

smokinaces · 19/06/2012 21:19
