10,000 steps a day... Who wants to join me?

I am tryin to do 10,000 steps a day and wondered if anyone wanted to join me?

We can use the thread to record what we do each day.

I have a pedometer and really want to use this to make me more active generally but starting gently really.

Who's in?

I'm in - I wear a pedometer every now and again anyway to spur me on to do my 10,000 steps, and have just put it on this morning. I find it does make me more active during the day and more inclined to do more walking.

CharlieUniformNovemberTango · 05/06/2012 08:27

Yay!

What one do you have?

I have the omron walking style one.

It's always pretty accurate and records steps, aerobic steps, km and calories. What I also like is that it doesn't count the first 4 seconds of movement so shifting about in your chair doesn't count as steps :)

I've been trying top but isn't that like 4 miles? I'm in though

4265 yesterday (but that was during actual walk not whole days worth)

Will put it on in a mo

ElizabethSwann · 05/06/2012 08:43

I'll join - just need some batteries for the pedometer - will get them today :)

MercuryRising · 05/06/2012 09:10

I will join you starting from tomorrow. Ive signed up to do the half marathon London Shine Walk this autumn, so need to be walking as much as possible and reporting my steps on here will give me extra motivation.

CharlieUniformNovemberTango · 05/06/2012 09:17

Welcome everyone!

It is quite a lot but it's a good target to aim for. I think as long as you are getting close to it you've got something to push for.

I've even found myself stepping infront of the tv in the evening to get to my 10,000 :)

I am finding myself averaging around 8,000 so this thread should really help me push that last bit.

I've got the Omron Walking Style pedometer as well. It is much better than others I've used, and works if it is in a random pocket as well, rather than having to be positioned just so on a waistband.

Charlie I've done the same - but I've worked out that from the sofa to the wardrobe and back is 67 steps, so I have found myself putting away ironing one thing at a time to try and reach target Smile. Not sure if this is dedicated or just really sad.

I've lapsed massively recently though as I had back problems and was lying down most of the time. All better now though, but I can feel how unfit I am even walking up the stairs.

CharlieUniformNovemberTango · 05/06/2012 10:11

Dedicated only. Definitely dedicated.

not admitting to exactly the same scenario

We have large communal bins at the end of our street and it's 308 steps to walk the rubbish down and come back again. I have taken to walking individual dirty nappies in bags down if DD is here to watch DS :)

I have a small kitchen bin and use carrier bags so empty that morning and evening too. Taking all this rubbish out earns me about 1000 steps most days :)

Nice gentle walking should be good for your back then. It's a good way to ease you back into more activity.

What I like about my pedometer is that it also records aerobic steps. That's the steps that are done over a continuous 10 minute period so not slowly wandering around the house or supermarket.

It is helping me to see that the quality of the steps does count too.

But I'm just aiming for the big 10k at the moment. When I'm regularly hitting that I may try to s

Grr to my phone posting too soon!

I want to set a percentage to aerobic eventually.

dylsmimi · 05/06/2012 10:19

Not sure if you know but other activity such as swimming (where you can't wear a pedometer) cycling, gym etc can also count towards your 10,000 steps. I don't have a link to post but there should be a conversion chart online somewhere! Good luck

CharlieUniformNovemberTango · 05/06/2012 10:21

mercury that shine walk looks good. I'm quite tempted to sign up now.

Are you doing it with a group or friends?

Perhaps we can get a mn group going :)

Great thread! May I join please? For a variety of reasons, I may not start properly until next Sunday but would love to report in from then onwards to keep motivated! Realistic, moderate way to go from my default position (couch potato Blush) to starting to exercise more regularly.

MercuryRising · 05/06/2012 10:34

Charlie I think it looks there will be a brilliant atmosphere. I am doing it with my aunt in memory of her sister who died from Ovarian Cancer last August. I think its a great thing to do, not only will we get fit but we are also raise money for desparately needed research. I need to lay off the cake and wine though as my aunt is twenty years older but probably twice as fit as me. Blush

Nagoo · 05/06/2012 10:47

I'll dig my pedometer out :)

CharlieUniformNovemberTango · 05/06/2012 11:02

Welcome sanguine and nagoo

Just start posting as soon as you're off!

I'm just about to pack up some lunch and head out with the kids. DS was poorly yesterday so I didn't even leave the house but he's doing ok so a quick walk to the town centre will do us some good.

I'm going to try and note average steps for some of the regular walks like to the train station or supermarket in case I've not remembered my pedometer.

Just walked to my fri ends the long way ... 2471 so far today

CharlieUniformNovemberTango · 05/06/2012 14:18

7592 so far.

Would have made my target on the walk home but it started pouring and I didn't have a rain over for DS so we jumped on the bus.

I'll be stepping on the spot in front of the tv tonight then :)

Morning ladies. How many steps did you do in the end yesterday Charlie and GOD? I have dug my pedometer out and it is now attached. I also made the tragic mistake of weighing myself this morning and the result was not good, so Im now back on my fitness pal as well! Sad

Onlyaphase · 06/06/2012 13:48

Always a mistake to weigh yourself Mercuryrising as it rarely brings good news I find Smile

I checked on some of those websites yesterday that convert activities like swimming to steps taken - they vary wildly though, so I've taken a rough average for my 30 minute swim and the total for the day was 10,500 as a conservative estimate.

I always find getting to 10,000 more difficult during half term as I have DD with me, so dog walks are shorter, no walking up the school drive etc. Today should be better though as I've been in and out of B&Q and Sainsburys and that always helps.

Anybody else?

MercuryRising · 06/06/2012 15:42

I know Only - big mistake and Im sure Ive actually eaten more because of it! My ds had multisports club at school today so I have walked him there and back so thats resulted in quite a few steps. Ive done 7520 so far and still have housework to do so Im hoping I may get close to 10000. Do you swim for half an hour everyday? That is fantastic! I wish I was that motivated.

madwomanintheattic · 06/06/2012 15:49

We've got about four of the damn things and I can only find ds's crappy pokewalker.

Ffs.

I may or may not return, but great idea. Why didn't I think of it?

milewalker · 06/06/2012 21:51

i'm sure some of you have been bored by me and my love of walking before so sorry in advance, just to say to you all i think its fab your all doing this. walking is how i lost the very large majority of my weight and i'm doing a walking marathon in 3 and half weeks (never thought i'd be doing that).
could i also just add that although i'm still trying to loss a few more pounds i don't weigh myself anymore-i only measure or use my clothes as a guide.

Onlyaphase · 07/06/2012 07:47

Anyone around today?

I managed about 9,500 yesterday before giving in. A lot of that was up the steepest hill known to mankind, so I feel stiff today. Having spent 4 weeks lying down and doing nothing due to back ache I'm horrified at the decrease in fitness. Or maybe I'm getting old (42). So depressing.

I have 3 children over later for 5 hours. And it is going to rain. So I suspect that I will get a fair amount of steps in tidying up later on. No point in tidying now!

CharlieUniformNovemberTango · 07/06/2012 07:55

only that's great :o

I had a poorly DS yesterday so only managed 2326 :(

Lots of walking today to make up for it.

Sorry I wasn't around yesterday. My phone charger is broken and I've been trying to conserve the battery. Off in a while to get a new one so should be back on form tonight after we get back from my mums :)

Happy stepping guys :)
