BIWI's Two Week Low Carb Boot Camp - starts Monday 16 April

PaquesJeLeVauxBien · 06/04/2012 22:41

I've been back low carbing seriously since February and have lost a stone (almost). I have another 1.5 stones to lose.

It's been going well for me, but I have slowed down in the last month and I'm keen to get things back on track and up the speed of my weight loss. To that end, I have devised a strict two week bootcamp.

It will start on Monday 16 April to give anyone who wants to join in time to sort themselves out, get planning and generally get themselves ready to join in.

Who's up for it?

Twit · 09/04/2012 20:52

How do you know?

I read on the low-carb thread about feeling a bit 'fluish at first

sinisterduck · 09/04/2012 21:21

i want ketosis sticks- anyone know whee you can get them?

ToryLovell · 09/04/2012 21:25

Our local chemist sells them for around a fiver for 50 or you can buy them on ebay

PaquesJeLeVauxBien · 09/04/2012 21:29

You can buy them in Boots. BUT if you're drinking plenty of water then the ketostix will only ever be pale pink

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/04/2012 21:30

I bought on ebay - I shall get some more for this blitz!!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/04/2012 21:30

Takes me less than 48 hours to get into ketosis

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 09/04/2012 21:32

Thought I had been on this thread ... anyway I am on now.

And ready!

sinisterduck · 09/04/2012 21:43

Right- will go to boots tommorow! Thanku.

FaresPlease · 09/04/2012 22:03

Oh I'm so in. Had been weighing up low-gi versus straight low carb, but really I know low-carb works. Have done it before and seen amazing results. And I know that if I can get past 2 days my cravings will be all but gone - I've found myself almost forgetting to eat on low-carb before, which is very very not like me!!! How awful is it that I'm so unsure of my willpower that I can't trust myself to get through 2 measly days??! Just shows the power sugar has over me...!!! I NEED to lose 1 stone, but would ultimately like to lose 2.

ToryLovell · 09/04/2012 22:10

24 hours carb free to get into ketosis for me

Not sure if I should be worried about that with regard to diabetes actually

eggkr · 09/04/2012 23:16

Did someone say no tea? Wtf?Id rather eat nothing and just drink tea.

Lovecat · 09/04/2012 23:51

That lactose-free milk (Lactofree? They sell it in most supermarkets, anyway) is very low in carbs compared to normal milk - can't remember exactly but it's comparable to having double cream in your coffee (which is allowed on Atkins - but are we allowed it on bootcamp? )

Lovecat · 09/04/2012 23:52

Ooh, and I remember that you could have unsweetened soy milk in tea and it was not entirely revolting an acquired taste but ok (no good for coffee, though, it curdled).

BIWI · 10/04/2012 08:20
Grin

You can have tea, eggkr - just try and restrict it to one or two cups a day. It's not the tea that's the issue, it's the milk and the carbs in the milk.

Lovecat - if Atkins allows it, who am I to refuse?!

DON'T BOTHER WITH THE KETOSTIX!

Here's a really useful post about them, from the Carblife website (which also explains why you should be drinking lots of water):

"I know how encouraging the use of ketostix can be - to see the stix change colour confirming that ketones are being produced is a big boost. After all ketones in the urine means that fat is being burned. However there is a lot of confusion about thier use and the reading we should get.

a) If you are eating very low carb then in order for your body to have energy it must turn to either fat or protein. This can either be from stores within the body or from dietary resources. However because the body can't fully "burn" protein for all its energy needs it has to switch to burning fat for it's main energy supply. This is obviously good news for the overweight.

b) Once the body has swtiched to using fat for fuel (which it has to do when low carbing), it produces ketone bodies as a 'by-product'. The body can then also use a varying amount of these ketones for it's energy needs.

c) The amount of ketones produced in the blood will depend on how much fat is "burned" for energy. The level of ketones can therefore depend on a number of factors:
--- The amount of exercise you are doing
--- The amount of fat available (not normally a problem with the overweight!)
--- The health of the metabolism.

d) However producing ketones does not mean that you will get a reading on the urine sticks. The amount found in the urine is only what the body can't use for its own needs. It's the excess that has 'spilled' over into the urine.

e) In some cases this can mean that your body is burning fat, and producing ketones but the stix don't change colour. This is due to your body using up all available ketones in the blood for it's own use, leaving none or very few to spill over into the urine.

f) This means that if you don't drink enough, two things can/will happen:
--- The quantity in the urine makes the urine very ketone 'rich', resulting in dark coloured stix.
--- The body will stop production of ketones to prevent levels in the body getting too high. No production ketones = no fat burned.

g) If you do drink plenty of water you are constantly flushing the ketones out and allowing more to spill over from the blood. Drinking plenty of water therefore causes the following to happen:
--- it allows more ketone bodies to be produced and therefore more fat to be burned.
--- the constant flushing out means that the ketone concentration in the urine is kept low and a light colour is normally seen on the stix.

h) However it is possible, in a few cases, to be drinking loads of water and still getting dark readings on the stix. This can be due to:
--- High amounts of fat eaten often shortly before testing.
--- The time of the test. Testing first thing in the morning would normally produce a darker colour than last thing at night.
--- High amounts of body fat are being burned - however this would normally only happen (but not exclusively) either at the very start of low carbing or during a visit from the whoosh fairy!
--- The body for some reason is not needing the use of the ketones in the blood.

In summary then - use the stix for encouragement but not to worry too much about the reading. If the stix are dark make sure you are drinking at least the right amount of water for your weight. In rare situations they will stay dark so realise they can be dark for other reasons. But check that the water drunk is enough. Oh, and restricting carbs to low levels will cause your body to burn fat and produce ketones.

I am just sitting down to write up this weeks menu and realising I am going to struggle to low carb on a soya/dairy free diet, I will eat meat but cannot eat meat every day, just no way.

I'm not sure if this means I have to give up before I have even begun?

Twit · 10/04/2012 10:03

I think for me soup is going to be the way forward - ready made (once I've made it) quick, comforting and yummy. I might look up a low carb recipe for an idea on how much to use though.
I will use the veg BIWI used in her low carb cottage pie instead of carrots and onion etc and probably make chicken soup.
AM off to our little tescos later, with not much money right now - what should I get ready for next week?

BIWI · 10/04/2012 10:12

slowburner - what about fish?

BIWI · 10/04/2012 10:13

... and eggs?

eggkr · 10/04/2012 10:42

slowburner I feel a bit defeatest about it all already tbh.
Can one eat cheese at all?
I am considering doing a version of it but with the fruit as i cant imagine not having any fruit. I also havent got time to cook eggs every morning esp on work days so i thought maybe have berries and yog for breakfast then meat and salad for lunch then meat and veg for dinner. I know its not as good but i cant see it wont work.
Just have to get on with the business of force feeding the kids their eggs so there are no temptations around next week.
BWIW -Will you strike me off if i do my lite version?I only need to lose a stone maybe 2 Grin

ToryLovell · 10/04/2012 10:51

slowburner, are you ok with nuts? Alpro do nut milks - I have just put some hazelnut milk in coffee and it is delish and low carb.

Are eggs classed as dairy? (DH is dairy intolerant but ok with eggs)

Fish and seafood are good. Quorn sausages (not sure if they stick in some sneaky soya) are low carb.

I think you would be fine with the less strict version of low carb - so with berries / houmous / nuts - so lower carb than bread / potatoes / wheat, but also high protein to fill you up.

PostBellumBugsy · 10/04/2012 11:00

waves to BIWI & nods head in approval at thread.

I'll be here. I'm in bootcamp until I get to desired weight.

WillieWaggledagger · 10/04/2012 11:48

That ketostix post is very useful

you see drinking more water is what I really need to work on. I drink about 2 litres per day but do need to up this

sinisterduck · 10/04/2012 12:09

I'm going to have cheese, dont think I can do it without. And maybe few nuts.
