Oh crap. I am going on a school trip tomorrow to help and I have to take a packed lunch. Thinking about making some smallish quiches without crust - would tuna, pepper and cheese work or is that weird?

So this cream thing - I have been having about 3 tbsp a day (not everyday) in a cheese sauce. Should I stop?

GetOrfMoiiLand · 28/02/2012 16:54

How would you make quiches without crust?

You could make wraps but with lettuce leaves instead of tortillas. That always travels well.

If I t ake a lunch to work I normally take ham, cheese and boiled eggs with pepper slices.

PostBellumBugsy · 28/02/2012 17:07

My "packed" lunch is sliced Leederdamer or Jarlsberg rolled around lettuce leaves. It is a bit pricey (as those sliced cheeses are expensive) but it is filling & not messy.

vnmum · 28/02/2012 17:35

getorf That is the one I was using but it is 4g carbs per 25g scoop, 2g of sugars. I was having a double scoop shake to fill me up hence 8g carbs and 4g sugar.

Had tin of tuna with mayo and a small sald for tea, thats 15.5g carbs today so far on my calculations

BIWI · 28/02/2012 17:57

AngryFeet - not everyone responds like that to dairy - you might be fine!

AngryFeet · 28/02/2012 19:11

Getorf - I was just going to use a large yorkshire tin and they will almost be like mini frittatas but I have seen low carb crust free quiches on the net so I am not making it up Wink

CheerfulYank · 28/02/2012 19:15

AngryFeet you could do a frittata instead of a quiche? Like this maybe.

Well, I was going to have eggs with peppers and mushrooms today, but we didn't have any eggs. :( So for breakfast I had tuna with cheese, and an enormous lettuce salad with vinegar, oil, and grilled chicken for lunch. Is too much lettuce a no no?

flipflopflap · 28/02/2012 19:52

I've got this crustless quiche saved in my bookmarks but I'm yet to try it. I'm pretty sure you can use any cheese in the recipe though, and sub the mushrooms for bacon if you wish. I might give it a try one night this week.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 28/02/2012 19:57

I think that will be fine cheerful - I don't think you can have too much lettuce really, I have just looked and 1 cup shredded is 1g, so you could have had loads and it wouldn't really add up to much.

I have just had a lovely dinner - the mince wasn't defrosted to do the stuffed peppers, so made sort of eggs florentine (wilted spinach, then eggs cracked in and baked in oven for 10 mins, and served with hollandaise).

There is a packet of bastarding viennese whirls in the kitchen - they were sitting on the table WAITING for me like a malevolent toad when I got in. DD bought them. I don't even like Viennese whirls but had a mad micro second yearning to tear open the packet with my teeth and eat the lot.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 28/02/2012 19:58

oh YUM at those crustless quiches. What a great idea. I hadn't even thought such a thing existed.

CheerfulYank · 28/02/2012 20:36

I want eeegggssss.....

And sugar. I really really want sugar. Must hold strong!

CointreauVersial · 28/02/2012 22:37

I love eggy things - note to self - must do some egg mayo for tomorrow's lunch. Surely a frittata and a crustless quiche are virtually the same, just cooked in different ways? Both sound mighty tasty, though.

This evening's dinner was meatballs (breadcrumb-free) with garlic-sauteed courgettes. I am now doing my shopping list and trying to think of some nice things to cook over the next few days. I have a ton of chicken thighs, so might stuff them with something cheesy and wrap in something parma hammy. I'm also going to make some soup - maybe cauliflower and stilton - which is handy for office lunch.

CheerfulYank · 28/02/2012 23:46

My head hurts and I feel dizzy. :(

vnmum · 29/02/2012 08:12

well I have lost weight this morning so I am happy seeing as it is my weigh in day. I have lost 1.25lbs.
I also had ++ on ketostix so I am definately in ketosis.

kandinskysgirl · 29/02/2012 08:33

Morning everybody. I had plucked up the courage to come and ask you all a question after lurking for a few days, however it had been answered before I even asked. (It was if a crustless quiche was possible).

However after deciding I would post, I thought I would anyway. This is week 3 for me on atkins, week 1 went really well, I lost 5lb and found it an easy way to eat (but slightly more pricey than normal). Week 2 was a disaster, I ended up eating pizza/fish and chips and copious amounts of wine and put back on 3lb. Instead of resigning myself to another failed diet I am back on it with determination this week. My general menu is
-scrambled eggs and half a tomato for breakfast
-ham/other meat salad for lunch with cheese and olives
-meat/fish and veggies for dinner (eg. salmon, asparagus and a mozzarella salad).

I am finding the food really yummy and this way of eating has regulated my hunger in an amazing way. However I am having a few problems that I thought I could pick you brains on as I am here.

Sometimes I work late shifts at short notice, for example yesterday I started at 9, took packed lunch with me but then instead of finishing at 5 I worked till 11. This sent me into panic, I quickly went to Waitrose and found some cooked prawns and some cooked cocktail sausages to eat. In hindsight the sausages weren't brilliant but everything else was sandwiches-anyone have a go to lunch if they need to buy it at all? I'm normally pretty organised and take my own food so I was feeling a bit flustered.

Also I am finding it difficult to go to the loo Blush, has anyone got any supplement recommendations at all? I only drink water normally (don't drink caffeine or fruit juices) so I am drinking loads of it and having lots of green veggies so think I will need a supplement too.

Umm...well yes that is everything, I hope you don't mind me jumping in at all.

PostBellumBugsy · 29/02/2012 08:50

Kandinsky, if you have a Waitrose nearby, useful low carb items they sell that are good for lunches / snacks / away from home meals are:

Egg mayo sandwich filler
Prawn sandwich filler
Various pates
Sliced cheeses

I often have one of the above with a lettuce heart / small lettuce. Fairly easy & not too messy.

If you have a microwave at work, the Waitrose Chicken Korma is ridiculously low in carbs & very, very delicious.

Can't give any great advice on the poo issue, as I don't have that problem. I have noticed that coconut in any of its guises, has a very definite laxative effect for me - but don't know if it works the same for others.

kandinskysgirl · 29/02/2012 08:53

Thank you PostBellumBugsy for your suggestions. I wish I was a regular Waitrose shopper (oh to be rich enough Grin[) but it is the only shop close enough to work to run to in a half hour break so I will keep those in mind in case I have to do an emergency food dash again.

PostBellumBugsy · 29/02/2012 09:00

Same here - only supermarket where I work too.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 29/02/2012 09:07

Waitrose also sell wraps but with a lettuce leaf instead of a tortilla - I have always found those useful.

I also have the same loo problem - I have to get some psyllium husks as I have seen those recommended everywhere for this diet. laxatives don't seem to work for me (plus I don't really like the thought of taking them on a regular basis) but glycerine suppositories are rather helpful.

cheerful are you eating enough? Try and drink a shedload of water to try and counteract the headache. Fight through it and I am sure you will feel better soon.

PostBellumBugsy · 29/02/2012 09:12

Oh GetOrf, haven't seen those wraps. In which section are they: sandwiches or salady stuff?

GetOrfMoiiLand · 29/02/2012 09:15

They are normally in the sandwiches bit.

FreeButtonBee · 29/02/2012 09:45

Dropped just over a lb this morning to 10 11.75. Aim is to stay in the 10.11 range this week. Also got period this morning so not in the best of humour.

Just had yog and berry compote for breakfast (not the best choice but something that I am okay with once a week or so).

Lunch: not sure - maybe soup?

Dinner: left over steak - the piece of bavette I bought was MASSIVE, probably with a rocket salad. Not sure what else to have with it. Might have cheese for afters.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 29/02/2012 10:23

Where did you get your bavette free - I have never seen it in a UK butcher and it is my face cut (eat it til it is coming out of my ears when in France)

KellyKettle · 29/02/2012 10:58

Can I join you all?

Quite excited to find this thread. I have been low carbing (Paleo) for a little while since I read Gary Taubes book after Christmas but I've not been overly committed so far.

I've found it easy to skip grains but the odd bit of sugar, fizzy drink or chocolate bar creeps in daily especially when I'm short of time.

DH and I both have family history of diabetes. He's gained a bit of a belly that he's struggling to suck in these days and I am carrying a bit of post-baby weight I'd like to shift.

Plus DD1 adores sugar in all it's forms and I'd like her to eat more healthily.

I'm batching cooking today: beanless chilli, chicken curry & bolognese sauce. We'll have them with cauli "rice" and courgette noodles.

DH has complained about missing cereal in the morning so I'm making home made granola today without the grains. No idea how that will turn out.

Lunch today will be salmon and salad.
