Aw Ali :( Thinking back, my Ds only ever had one party invitation from reception through to year 6 :(. He had a few friends, but didn't and still doesn't make friends easily. I don't know why. He's a lovely boy (if you take away his teenage attitude Hmm), but boys don't take to him and at his age, girls only like the popular boys. I tell him it's because he's tall and handsome! (he really is Grin).

It's hard being a Mummy isn't it?

Arfur Double chin and Neck ex; There are 2 they are Acupressure exces. -

  1. standing or sitting drop yr head slowly right back.
  2. bring yr shoulders up around yr ears at the same time
  3. also take yr tongue to the roof of yr mouth.
  4. slowly drop yr head to yr chest (or as far as poss.!)
  5. And bring yr shoulders as far down as poss.
  6. When repeating this bring yr head up by pressing up from the top of yr skull

Do this slowly and carefully breathing through yr nose all the time.

And

  1. press gently either side of yr adam's apple for 10 then massage for 10
2.Do the same right under yr chin.
  1. then at the base of yr neck as well.

These are brilliant if you've got a bad cough as well!! esp the 2nd one. Do each one 3 times night and morning.

kinky Wheat Belly is written by William Powis it's amazing, the full details are on the Food Page; thread title is Are wholegrains good for you?

Ephiny · 22/02/2012 14:58

I'm seeing this low-carb/no-wheat thing all over MN recently - not sure if it's a few 'evangelical' people being very vocal about it, or if lots of people are trying this and finding it works wonders...

Personally always thought it was a 'fad', but then I find it hard to imagine eating a low-carb diet, just can't see how I'd get enough calories, especially as I don't eat meat. Maybe that's why it works for overweight people though, you end up just eating a lot less.

KinkyDorito · 22/02/2012 15:39

Ali sending hugs. It's so crappy. Sad

ppeat wondered which thread it was!

Ephiny I honestly believe the best and healthiest take on it are from the likes of Patrick Holford, Marily Glenville and Ian Marber. They aren't 'low' carb, they are careful, low GL carbs and it is fairly sensible advice. Not that I take any of it Grin, I'm just well read in the diet book industry!!!! I did Atkins and it made me feel like shit on a stick. It was horrific. I was sooooo constipated and I was peeing acid, plus it leeched all of the pottasium out of me, so when I cried, it was just water, no salt. Scary. Confused (I actually quite liked eating like that, but fear my kidneys might have shut down if I'd carried on, I was so dehydrated I was dizzy all the time even though I was drinking about 20pts water each day.)

KinkyDorito · 22/02/2012 15:39

usingapseudonym · 22/02/2012 16:27

I know someone who stuck rigidly to Atkins and ended up with gout in his toe :(

KinkyDorito · 22/02/2012 16:39

I can see how easily that might happen.

I was on less than 20g carbs for 4 weeks, lost loads of weight and ate lots of cheese, never felt hungry as your body shuts it off (Hmm), and felt like death.

BigBoobiedBertha · 22/02/2012 17:31

Hello everybody,

Pancake day done and dusted. Chocolate and sweets are now forbidden for 6 weeks. So far so good. I have been out all day so I haven't been tempted anyway but I was very hungry when I got in and had a very small piece of cake to get me to teatime. It was delicious. Grin

Ali - I have been where you are as well. DS1 also has mild aspergers. He doesn't have friends but seems OK with it. He loves his family, likes to be with us but he doesn't need anybody else it seems. It has taken 11 years for me to get comfortable with that and I still find it hard to understand but I suspect DH was the same as DS. He didn't seem to have friends to speak of at school but he was very different from DS as he doesn't have dyspraxia or AS and although you wouldn't think it to look at him now, he was very sporty so he had the camaradarie of team games and something to fill his time from that.

It is a very tough time when you have a child who isn't one of the 'in-crowd' but at the same time, if you take the longer view, they are often the more successful adults. They don't peak too soon or spend more time on their social life than their education. It is a long way off when your LO is only 3 though, I know. Sad

Have you spoken to the nursery about your concerns? It might be worth it. If they think there is a problem you can come up with a plan to sort something out. If they don't see a problem then that is good and might be a bit of reassurance.Smile

Solo - I say the same to DS1 - he is also tall and handsome. Smile Just wish he sounded a little less like Scooby Doo at the moment - his voice is breaking, bless him.

KinkyDorito · 22/02/2012 17:46

BBB I'm glad you are here. You can hold my hand when the Twirl bites start calling me from the cupboard. What bastards Cadbury's are, bringing out those delectable little treats just as Lent begins.

Ephiny · 22/02/2012 18:10

Kinky - that sounds awful about your experience with Atkins! Shock. I do think there's something to be said for cutting back on sugary snacks and watching portion size with things like bread, pasta etc, but some approaches are just too extreme IMO.

PhoenixFromTheFlames · 22/02/2012 18:28

Crikey you talk a lot! I don't eat wheat...I did an elimination diet and found wheat to be the trigger for my ibs along with processed food and excess sugar. I found initially with Pauling I took the eat what you want lure towards processed food too much but gradually I'm desiring less processed food and more fruit and veg. Tonight I was hungry befor the gym. I went to boots and chose a fruit snack pack :) I looked at crisps -I looked at the shapers and thought don't want that crap ! And chose fruit. Like, that is what I wanted!
I love this. I'm exercising doing stuff I enjoy so I'm happy. I wouldn't push myself to do something I hated.
I heard of someone on Atkins who did really well but went off it for weekend at a wedding and gained 11lb Shock You just know it's not healthy don't you? And expensive!

BigBoobiedBertha · 22/02/2012 18:30

Kinky - Bloody Sainsburys are even worse, having them at £1 a bag instead of £1.75 or something. I have a part finished bag. I shall be brave and donate them to the DSs. Smile

HeyNonnyNo · 22/02/2012 19:22

Ooh those chocolates sound awesome, thanks guys... Ali hugs to you and your little boy. All the boys you all describe sound gorgeous and they will be wonderful sorted adults I'm sure. I've had a fab day pauling, ate substantially less and feel v proud. I've just bought some glorious 40 and 50s vintage dress patterns to sew up the minute I shift this last stone. I'm a pear with what remains of a tiny waist so really struggle to buy flattering clothes. And ooh, down a pound, yay!

BigBoobiedBertha · 22/02/2012 22:07

HeyNonnyNo - 40's and 50's dresses are very flattering for the pear shaped amongst us aren't they? I envy your ability to just knock up clothes that fit round the waist. Story of my life, things that are too big round the middle. Even with all the flab, there is still less flab in the middle than anywhere else. Angry

I am sure you will need to get sewing very soon. Smile

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/02/2012 08:04

Right I have got something of a grip of myself.
90% of all this can be put down to illness and the fact that from having Daddy 24/7 for 2 months he is now only here for an hour at bedtime.
We all slept better last night too which has helped.
I have also decided to ask the mum of a little girl DS is very friendly with if said girl wants to come over to play for an hour or two one day. I am rubbish at doing things like that, but I must exert myself.

Realise that a lot of this is actually about me. I am suffering a major self-esteem crisis, which is ironic when you consider that I look better than I have done for years. I need to find some time to do something for myself and address that.

Oh and Solo my bridesmaid dress is sorted! Bride picked two outfits, I went and tried them both on and have bought one. It is a teeny bit snug, which is good because I want to lose another 10lbs before she gets married and don't want the thing flapping off me.

Nonny I am very envious of your ability to rustle up clothes, and your tiny waist! Envy Grin

ppeatfruit · 23/02/2012 08:40

Morning all!!!Smile Please don't anyone get the idea that no wheat means no carbs!! there's loads of other much healthier carbs that are not so easy to find it's true (try giving up wheat for Lent in Fr. or Eng. esp. when you're travelling!!!) Other healthier carbs are ; rice esp. whole, rye, oats, spelt, Kamut quinoa, I eat those 'cos i've never been good with wheat of any type.

SOME people are brill. witn NO carbs. the only time dh lost ALL his weight and was healthy and happy was when he had been on Atkins (note the past tense!!) as soon as he stopped the weight piled on more than ever! Sad

I tried it for 2 days and NO WAY !!!!! . IMO It's 'cos we're different blood types.

ppeatfruit · 23/02/2012 08:49

using Ref. gout DH and I have put his gout down to pork products when he doesn't eat them he's absolutely fine.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/02/2012 08:56

ppeat - definitely agree about wheat and travelling, I am like a bloater if I eat bread and then get on a plane - or go anywhere actually thinking about it. Disastrous.

Infact, we are staying away for my brother's wedding this weekend, and thank you because that has prompted me to have no bread after lunch today until Sunday morning if I want to avoid the people asking me when my next baby is due in the dress I am wearing on Saturday! Grin

DH finds low carbing really easy, he loses lots of weight very easily and feels brilliant. He is focusing on exercise and avoid snacking at the moment and the weight is just falling off, he looks great! Grin

BigBoobiedBertha · 23/02/2012 09:30

I think maybe men generally find low carbing easier because the food is more man-friendly. This is a very sweeping generalisation which I am sure we can all find exceptions too but men tend to be more into meat and savoury things so if you can have a fry up on Atkins it is right up their street. Women on the other hand tend to like more carb based things, particularly if they are sugary. I would rather have a pain au chocolate than a fry up any day of the week! Give me cake over a burger too. I could never do Atkins in a million years but then I don't have a problem with wheat. Diary maybe, which could be a problem with pure Atkins approach as I understand it, but not wheat.

Glad you are feeling a bit more positive today today Alibaba. Your situation reminded me of when DS1 was turning 3 and DH had been out of work for 2 months. I was pregnant with DS2 and DS1 started to behave strangely too when DH went back to work, especially as DS2 was born 5 weeks later. It is a lot for them to handle, when things keep changing.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/02/2012 10:30

BBB it is a lot for them to handle. I'm unsettled by it all myself, and I think DH and I have been more fraught in general and with each other than we would like to admit. I've realised that I haven't made enough allowance for DS1, especially with him being poorly, but it is a fine line between making allowance and letting him get away with murder - which then causes its own set of problems.

BigBoobiedBertha · 23/02/2012 11:06

Indeed - and it is often only with hindsight that we can see what a big deal it all was when on a day to day basis we all just get on with things, don't we? We only thought about it when we were trying to work out what was going on with DS's behaviour and we realised what a lot had happened to the little chap in only the space of a few months. We moved house from Essex back to here as well in that time.

Blimey when I think back that quite a year. Grin

ppeatfruit · 23/02/2012 11:49

Ali have fun at the wedding Smile IMO it's best not to ignore the L.O.s (and only reacting if they do something wrong to get yr attention) Keep being positive and noticing (reinforcing) their good behaviour. Smile

BBL.O.s need extra hugs when there's so much happening in their lives and the above.

Solo · 23/02/2012 14:08

Hi all :) I'm doing Ok here I think. Still coughing, but it's definitely improving.

Ali what colour are you wearing? I don't know what colour we are having yet, but it's going to be a skimmy dress, so I have to be much slimmer! but it seems I have well over a year to get that way :(

Re the Atkins and frying; I don't really fry food. When I was doing that diet, I used to put a couple of rashers and a raw egg, a few mushrooms on a plate and microwave it all as I got ready for work.
If I'm having bacon or sausages now, I oven bake them. I don't have a grill that I can use, so can't grill them.

I must do pp's neck exercises. I did buy that book second hand last year, but must admit to finding it hard to follow. I will have to put up a pic of the book cover for you to tell me if it's the same one pp.

My book and cd arrived this morning Smile

I've read the 4 golden rules and am up to the chapter on emotional eating. I laid back and listened to the cd. Found the counting backwards from 300 a bit difficult, had to think about what number to go down to when I got to the 0's Grin Got down to about 120ish before I forgot about counting. Have a bit of a tickly cough too which was a bit distracting.

Thursday is housework day so after the cd I got on with putting out washing, tidying and cleaning. Midway I uncovered my (cheapy) powerplate so actually got on it for 5 minutes - normally I don't even notice it in the room!

I waited until my tummy started rumbling and had a sandwich and left some on the plate, but 5 minutes later felt like a clementine so ate one. Probably not done that quite right as I shouldn't have felt hungry after 5 minutes but I expect I'll get the hang of it.

So far I am thinking about food and my tummy quite a bit, but I'm hoping it's just because it's new and that a few days in I'll stop doing that.

Solo · 23/02/2012 14:15

Well done for starting nbee you will get the hang of it soon :)
