Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

TartyMcFalalalalalalalalarty · 28/12/2011 12:27

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

lisad well done, 1lb is great, but also well done on using your disappointment as a motivator instead of opening the biscuit tin.

dread to think what next week will bring. Less booze this weekend I guess :-)

fazsaeed · 25/01/2012 22:12

I need a lot of inspiration.
Im 102 kg.
Need to lose weight for health. I've got 1ds and bad health. Need some friends along the way :)

Help me please

Fairenuff · 25/01/2012 22:19

You are all doing so well. Don't get de-motivated. A 1lb loss is really good. At that rate you could be 52lb lighter this time next year. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

If you don't lose, you are maintaining. Sometimes your body has to 'settle in' to it's new weight and stay there for a little while. Just be comfortable with yourself and keep at it.

And if you gain weight it is either because you went over your allowance (which is ok to do once in a little while) or it could be water retention, time of the month, or even muscle gain. Who knows. Don't let it put you off your stride.

We will do this!

As you were Blush Grin

Fairenuff · 25/01/2012 22:21

Oh hello fazsaeed you caught me mid-motivational speech there.

You can do this, of course you can. Do you have a diet and/or exercise plan?

TalkinPeace2 · 25/01/2012 22:24

fazsaeed
you'll be fine.
First thing to do - even before joining any of the big organisations - start keeping a food diary.
An absolutely truthful one with weights and amounts
AND monitor truthfully what exercise you do
then you will know why you weigh what you do and will have a decent idea what you need to change.

Start to walk as much as you can, remember to carry extra things up and down the stairs, no more lifts and escalators or car journeys of under a mile

astounding as it may seem, those small changes will start you on the right path PDQ

set yourself a clear target. post it here.
Mine is 58kg by 10th March (my own reasons)
and then stop weighing yourself until you have done the above (and read ALL the tips on this thread - there are some excellent ones)

Once you know what you are doing wrong, WW or SW will help you put it right in a couple of months.

I was SHOCKED to drive past the WW meeting I sent to 10 years ago - and some of the same people were still there and still fat. FFS, which bit of it do they not get after all this time (and money)???

Fairenuff · 25/01/2012 22:29

TP Grin that made me nearly spit my tea over the keyboard.

The truth is that diets don't work alone. It's all about changing you lifestyle, attitude and actually really, really wanting to make a change.

fazsaeed · 25/01/2012 23:26

I do walk a lot with ds, always taking him
Out in the pram. I comfort eat. I had Pnd and that got the better of me!
I used to feel happy munching on crap but it doesn't satisfy me like it used to because I know I need to lose some weight. I can say no to the crap but not all the time.I've been doing calorie counting ( properly) and on a good day I have about 1600 cals. On a bad day don't ask!
Ive learnt to not cancel everything out because I just end up bingeing but to eat sensible portions as a treat not all the time. I live with parents and siblings and were a family who love junk food. Open the fridge and one drawer is full of chocs, freezers got plenty of ice cream and cupboards full of biscuits.
Today i had 2 piece if toast for breakfast, toastie with veg for dinner and lentil curry for tea. Nothing extremely healthy but it could be worse.
If there's healthy things in im usually the one eating it but when there's noting good left we resort to crap.
Im going to do some food shopping for me and ds tommorrow.
Get some healthy stuff then.
Ps be honest is that really bad weight?

SparkySparrow · 26/01/2012 08:26

Well done everyone on losing!

Iv'e had a bad couple of day's. Ds has only just got better and then dh gets sick, which makes me stressed when he's home as it compleatly ruins my routine. I haven't caved into chocolate yet but have had a few naughty things Confused .
I have also noticed that I am better when I check in here everyday as you lot keep me motivated! So that is my aim from now on because i don't want another gain on Mon!

Cup We can be the gainers that WILL lose next week!

Welcome fazaeed :) Have you thought about asking your family to join you with your healthy eating? That way you could all support each other.

Right, I'm off to walk ds to nursery and then power walk the long way home!

fazsaeed · 26/01/2012 08:47

Lol
They are junkaholics!
They won't change for nothing.
I've got my health and my own family to think about.
I guess my weight is really bad seen as you havent mentioned that :(
I will lose it ( with help :) )

Hope everyone has a good day today

putyourhatonsweetie · 26/01/2012 10:18

Australia day and TWO barbecues but managed to mostly stick to veg and salad and (fingers crossed) nobody noticed. Thnaks everyone for helping keep me on the straight and narrow. maybe this time next year I'll be able to wear a ridiculous flag bikini for the parties Wink

SparkySparrow · 26/01/2012 11:12

Oops sorry fazesaeed . How much is that in stones/pounds? (I get confused with kg ) And how tall are you? Have you worked out your BMI?

fazsaeed · 26/01/2012 11:18

Bmi is
Get ready
37 :(
204 lbs. Don't know what it is in stones.
It would just upset me and end up in me confort eating lol.

SparkySparrow · 26/01/2012 13:50

I make that out to be about 16st (Not 100%) .
Yes you are overweight and your BMI is very high (sorry if thats harsh), but look at it this way, this is the last day you are EVER (EVER) going to be that weight because you have decided to do something about it!
Try and do mini targets like someone up thread said (sorry, can't be arsed to find out who, but thank you!) , I hadn't been doing this but I am now so everything seem's a little bit more achievable.
Its all about positive thinking!

Have you tried WW or Slimmimg world? They put you on track for healthy eating without being a 'diet' as such. I personally am doing WW as I find its better for thing's like portion control (a issue for me) , Slimming world is great too (but don't know too much about that as its changed a bit since I tried it. lisad is doing SW!). I tried SW last year but didn't do to well as I was still eating LOADS of food which doesn't work for me and I don't always have time to cook a meal from scratch every night, although I am making more effort now! :)

Oh and do a weight loss chart and superglue it to your fridge! It works!

Wow, I went on abit there Grin . Good Luck!!

SparkySparrow · 26/01/2012 13:55

Oops Blush its 14st 5lb!
There you go, you've lost over a stone and a half already! Grin

fazsaeed · 26/01/2012 15:09

That means I put 1 and half stone on during pregnancy.
I thought that it would be a lot worse.
Atm I reeeeaaaallllyyyy fancy some chocolate.
I'm
In a family of immature siblings who would love to try and put me down. I was looking at some work out videos before. Just browsing. I went for a little walk before, not best day but not the worst either.

fazsaeed · 26/01/2012 15:11

I just worked it out on the net I'm 16stone.
God that sounds disgusting.
I think I'm carrying it well lol

SparkySparrow · 26/01/2012 16:54

Oops again! Sorry I'm so bad with numbers! Blush

Relatively good day, porridge for breakfast/lunch, and making a spaghetti bolognaise for dinner. Going to get back to meal planning as I find it seem's to help.

Fairenuff · 26/01/2012 17:18

fazsaed I started with a bmi of 34. I got it down to 31.5 just before Christmas and now I'm working on the next bit. Slow and steady is the answer. Don't expect miracles, don't get disheartened, just keep chipping away at it.

Do you have to live with your siblings and parents? Any chance you could rent a room for yourself and ds and start a new, healthier life together. If not, you will have to be strong to resist all that junk food. Keep talking to us about it to help keep you on track.

I haven't eaten junk food for months. Not even chips. At first I did miss it but do you know what, now it does not appeal to me at all. It looks dull and tasteless. I genuinely prefer delicious tasting homemade food. A bowl of chopped carrot sticks, cucumber sticks, peppers, sugarsnap peas are all lovely to nibble on. I have them instead of crisps. Your ds will love them. You will find lots of other help and advice here if you stick around.

Hathall · 26/01/2012 17:20

Bad day for me today. Work again! It gets so stressful that I could only grab food and becasue I'm disorganised my grabbed food today was Toast, 2 more slices of toast, apple, kit kat, doritos. Great!

I'll do my shred today.

Hi fazsaeed. It's good you're doing something about it. I think we all know how difficult it is. Walking is great. If you want any suggestions for dvds I can recommend Davina and Tae bo as good for beginners. Sorry to hear about your siblings putting you down.
If you don't want to join a slimming group then Myfitnesspal is a good site. You log all your daily cals there and keep track.

TalkinPeace2 · 26/01/2012 18:06

Hi Fazsaeed
well it has to be said you have a long way to go but you have come to the right thread for support.

Do not do DVDs with your BMI so high - the chance of injury from not doing something quite right is just too much.
Stick to walking - lots of it for the first few weeks.
Food : See if you can get a little counter top fridge (pawn shops and charity shops are great) into which you can put your healthy food and onto the front of which you can put your food diary and your weight loss chart.
That will serve two purposes

  1. you will not be tempted by the big fridge
  2. it will make an absolutely clear statement to your family that they may be happy to be lardy and suffer weight related illnesses but you are not. If you possibly, possibly can, start a written diary too - so that you start to analyse what makes you uspet and want to comfort eat and learn how to control it. Living with snotty younger siblings must be hard but you can be strong and you have a child to be there for in 30 years. By the time they start school you will be well on the way to looking fab.

Hathall I agree. Committee meetings about global warming that create so much hot air should be banned!!!!
well done sparky

CupOfBrownJoy · 26/01/2012 19:05

Welcome to the thread fazsaeed. I agree its very hard when others are snacking on all the stuff you're craving but can't have... but once you start to see the pounds falling off you won't want to spoil all your good work! I'm another SW'er and I can really recommend classes for keepin you on the straight and narrow and getting lots of healthy tips.

The hardest part is over for you already, and that's making a commitment to change.

I have been back on the diet with a vengence since weigh in (and I'm hoping my gain was a time-of-the-month thing!) and have had jacket potato and beans for lunch, with some cottage cheese today, bean chili, rice and cabbage (odd I know but it needs eating up!) for dinner. I have treated myself with an alpro soya chocolate dessert each night - 100 cals and delicious..

I'm also on my own most of the weekend so I can eat diet food without DP tempting me into eating the wrong things or sneaking a glass of wine or two....

CupOfBrownJoy · 26/01/2012 19:19

Hmmm just looked on myfitnesspal and I've consumed around 1500 cals today, although only 30g fat compared compared with a daily allowance of 45g. It reckons I should only be having 1300 cals per day but to be honest, I know what works for me so I'm going to blithely ignore the calorie counter.....
