Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

I don't tell people I'm on a diet as such. I just say I'm on a healthy eating kick to shift a bit of baby weight. Which, TBH, is a pretty accurate representation. I feel v strongly that I don't want DD1 to pick up that I am 'dieting', and she listens to everything these days, so I don't mention it much. If people offer me a biscuit I just say no thanks.

drywhiteplease · 09/01/2012 21:11

I am not telling anyone because it will then put pressure on me and if I don't manage it I will look a failure! But I want to talk about it which is why I love mn.

newyearsres I totally agree with you.i have always criticised 'diets' to my kids ESP my 11yr old daughter because I vividly remember being v influenced (albeit when I was a bit older) by my piers to follow some v unsavoury weight loss measures. Because I am eating wierd food this week I will feed kids early and eat with dh when he gets back later (also helps that he is on a diet too....we have turned into diet bores though........could kill a glass of wine!)

NewYearsRevolution · 09/01/2012 21:28

It's one of the reasons Dukan or something would be useless for me drywhite. I always eat at least two meals, if not three, with my DC's because they are only 2.5 and 7 months. I only eat later with DH maybe 3 suppers a week. DD1 already wanted to know why I chose veg soup and not cream of tomato at lunchtime, as clearly tomato is nicer Hmm. It's hard isn't it?

Vicky08 · 09/01/2012 21:57

I don't want to tell anyone I'm loosing weight either because I don't want the added pressure and you're all so right about kids they pick up on everything, you have to be so careful. It is very hard at times.

Today has been a good day for me. I've had wheetabix for breakfast. Chicken, fat free yogurt and 2 kiwis at lunchtime. More chicken with veg for dinner. For snacks I've had 2 fat free yogurts and an orange. I've also had loads of water but the problem is at work I can't really be running to the toilet so often and all of that extra water ...

Well, I hope everyone has a good day tomorrow

Mollyfloss · 09/01/2012 22:13

I don't really tell people either. Can't be bothered explaining it and you're so right about the kids. My DD1 is almost 4 and picking up everything.

Drywhite: Well done. You ate similar stuff to me. What is the salmon pate you're eating? What is it made of and is it allowed on the dukan? I would love to have some!
Also do you think these are allowed Toffee yoghurts

drywhiteplease · 09/01/2012 22:23

I should think toffee ok if no fat.

For salmon pate I put 3poached salmon fillets, about 2/3 tbsp no fat yogurt or f frais, about 125g chopped up smoked salmon and some lemon juice in blender. It's yummy on galette with prawns and chives.

Smoked mackerel the same with loads chives and black Perrier.
Let me know what you think.

I think the steak has just trimmed me over the edge.feel v full!

drywhiteplease · 09/01/2012 22:25

molly meant to say it makes a lot,I did not eat it all! For the smoked mackerel I used 4 fillets(2packs)

putyourhatonsweetie · 10/01/2012 00:08

Brilliant sparky wild claps backatcha!

Vicky it is rather lovely where we are yes, beautiful, but too hot at the moment, I hadn't realised before moving here that hot weather casn keep you in the house just as much, if not more than, rain does. can't wait for 'Autumn' when it cools down just slightly so I can be out and about a bit more.

As for telling people about the diet, no I don't for a few reasons, firstly I am vain and don't want people to know if I fail, second I remember my Mum always being on a diet when I was a girl...and thus thought I was fat (even though I was told I wasn't), I look at the pictures now and goodness I was slim. Like others I don't want my kids to pick up on it. Finally I have often worked in offices which were predominantly female and there is nothing worse than diet bores when you yourself are not dieting. I love this thread so can talk about it!

AngryFeet · 10/01/2012 10:59

What??!! I only lost 1 and a quarter pounds :( After the first three days I was down 3lbs but it has crept up. I have not been counting cals I guess but am definitely eating less than I was and have done some exercise. Stoopid scales!

Well I will plod on and maybe start to stick to 1300 cals a day.

SparkySparrow · 10/01/2012 12:08

Its still a loss AngryFeet ! :)

mrspepperpotty · 10/01/2012 12:13

Well done on your weight loss Vicky, Molly, NYR, buttonmoon, Tarty, sparky and AngryFeet!

AngryFeet, I think 1lb to 1.5lb per week is a good realistic aim and nothing to be disappointed about. I honestly believe that losing weight slowly is healthier and more likely to stay off in the long term.

I've just been on a 20-min cycle ride - it was meant to be longer, but my 2yo DS2 fell asleep in his bike seat - I could feel his helmet bobbing against my back so I thought I'd better take him home! DH gave me a bike for my birthday last year and I've only used it a handful of times, but I'm planning to start cycling regularly. The hills are a bit of killer with a 15kg weight (ie DS2) on the back!

TalkinPeace2 · 10/01/2012 12:51

weighed myself as normal today - 2 1/2 pounds since last week
did the new BodyBalance routine and ache from head to foot
just getting back to small meals and chewing lots is helping.

cycling is brilliant for you - no impact, cardio, arms and legs and you are out in the fresh air getting vitamin D to make strong bones

LollipopViolet · 10/01/2012 13:54

Well, I'm off to the gym later, so I've had some crackers and peanut butter, will have something at about 4, and then something light for tea when I come home. Didn't have breakfast so I'm still having 3 meals, just at weird times.

I weigh myself on a Saturday, but weighed in today after a weekend of drink and bad food and I'm 80.8kgs, which is good. Here's hoping I can get into the 70's soon :)

In other news, my top wisdom tooth is starting to make an appearance and is quite annoying :(

AngryFeet · 10/01/2012 14:18

I know, I know. I am just used to a 5-6lb loss at the start of a diet (even on something sensible like WW) since I have so much to lose. I guess I am thinking you lose the most on the first week so if I carry on this way I will be losing half a pound a week which will be demoralising.

I need to stick to a plan I think. Something free though and calorie based. Need to do a food diary.

drywhiteplease · 10/01/2012 15:12

Did Zumba and 10 hard minutes on rower yesterday.boby blitz class this morning.felt v stiff and when got mat out to do floor stuff felt as I was going to fall asleep! Went to hairdresser just now and actually did !
P.s I love my hairdresser.
Still have not weighed myself, saving till Fri........but am craving white wine!

LollipopViolet · 10/01/2012 16:29

Right, dilemma.

2 friends of mine go to the same gym as me. We're all going together tonight. Do I cover up completely as my self conscious brain wants me to, or do I brave wearing shorts in front of them? I've had no issue wearing shorts when I've gone on my own.

They're both quite skinny already. I am not.

TalkinPeace2 · 10/01/2012 16:40

Shorts
nobody cares
walk talk
you'll look FAB in shorts soon
and wear a tighter top than you would think
as NOTHING feels worse than a flappy sweaty t shirt - that then lifts up to reveal bra and tummy if you reach over to pick something up !

drywhiteplease · 10/01/2012 17:47

And don't mention anything about feeling fat/ my bums huge/ look at my mince pie tummy......just wear the shorts with "confidence" ....if you point out flaws people will zoom in.

SparkySparrow · 10/01/2012 18:13

Ok day today.
Porridge for breakfast, Chicken and Ham salad for lunch, doing a omelette for dinner.
Got ridiculous craving's for a sandwich, with warm crusty bread and loads of filling and Pizza!! Compleatly blame dh for the pizza craving. He came home with a large domino's and proceeded to eat the lot! Shock Bastard!!!!!

Lollipop TalkinPeace and drywhitepleas are right. Don't mention anything. No one cares. If you don't mind wearing them when your own then it'll be fine! :)

Vicky08 · 10/01/2012 21:04

Hi everyone, today I've been really busy beteween work and a poorly DD haven't had time for anything, just have a few minutes now to check in.

Today I've had a banana for breakfast, a bean stew thing, fat free yogurt and some pineapple for lunch, 2 manadrin oranges as a snack and grilled fish and veg for dinner.

Well must get on, will be back when I have more time tomorrow.

mrspepperpotty · 11/01/2012 07:35

Weigh in today and I have lost 2lb this week. Am feeling really good. Let's keep it up, ladies!

Mollyfloss · 11/01/2012 08:14

Thanks for the pate recipe drywhitwine. Still on the cruise phase of the Dukan diet here, eating oatbran, lean meat, eggs, 0% dairy & veg. Not counting calories and eating plenty. I have not eaten a carb since last Thursday (unless you count carrots). I am supposed to alternate one day of this with one day of pure proteins but really don't like the pure protein days so will stick with the cruise phase every day. I still have to lose weight right?

putyourhatonsweetie · 11/01/2012 10:22

well done mrspepperpotty, that's great. Hope everyone has a great day. Mine is just finishing ...lots of healthy food and the shred, and taken the dcs swimming (though to be fair not much calorie burn there, more like bobbing around whilst ds trys to take my top off)

Mollyfloss · 11/01/2012 11:30

Just worked out and feel good about myself. :) am now going to buy the stuff for the salmon pate and give it a go.

LollipopViolet · 11/01/2012 14:23

Well, went to the gym, had a good session last night. Too achey to go again today so going on Friday.

Going to the cinema and for a meal tomorrow with the same friends, and my BF. Hoping to eat a healthy tea so I can share some popcorn, which is not healthy but as a once in a while thing, I think it'll be OK :)
