January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Aw too late bugrit. Have been already. Did wk2r1 and it was so much better. Definitely manageable but that bit harder so will carry on with wk2.

Belted it on the way back! Really getting into it again. Was good to be able to use my lunch hour - a bit of fresh air and I feel motivated to get back to work now. Much better than having to drag myself out first thing in the morning or at night.

Nosey, so funny Grin That shop assistant deserves a medal for tact haha. But she's right, in no time you will be looking for everything in a slinkier size.

LieIn - lesson 4 don't wear old knickers that head south one the pace goes above a walk.

Report
Kewcumber · 06/01/2012 14:45

rusmum - start.

Seriously, just start.

You cannot be less fit than me. I'm 46, 17 stone and my last serious exercise was at university 25 years ago and I have serious tendonopathy in my right achilles heel.

I wore old trainers and my normal bra with a sports crop top I'd bought about 15 years ago and never worn because I knew if I waited to get kitted out properly it would just be a reason to delay again. My "run" was barely faster than my walk.

But I did it and I don;t feel awful, a bit waqrm and wobbly but OK and it was manageable if you just focused on the minute you were running at that point.

If I can do it, trust me anyone can.

kew well done, I know how you feel- I am a bit younger but also a lot a bit heavier and I have completed week one and am really looking forward to starting week 2 tonight. Never never thought I'd do it. My family are still scraping their chins off the floor!

rusmum I'll be out when my girls go to bed at 7 too- we'll be long distance run buddies! Good luck! (BTW when you get back you'll have to change your name to ruNmum Grin)

Good luck rusmum!

Nice one Kew, well done.

Know what you mean by the price of running gear, Karrimor is about the cheapest I've found, it's reasonable quality. Sports Direct usually has it in stock/reduced.

Next run is tomorrow, running will now have to compete with my other new obsession....ukulele! Got my Christmas present today Xmas Grin

Keep going everyone, your all doing really well :)
Are you all using 'normal' trainers or does anyone wear the shape up ones?

Report
cinnamongreyhound · 06/01/2012 17:23

I bought myself a new pair in the sports direct sale today and saw some shape up ones really cheap but thought it was bloomin hard enough with normal ones ManyMomentsofMadness!!

Well done Kew and good luck Rusmum

I'm a 7pm RUNNER Smile too, but today's a rest day, although finished work early so did half an hour of cross training on the gym which was dull, dull, dull compared to running!

Well done Kew!! Rusmum, go for it. it will be easier than you think!! Well the calf is slowly easing up. I can walk almost normally and has to run across the playground at work today when a little boy fell and hit his head. I managed to run with only a little pain. I think I may do my W1R2 again tomorrow but just walk it all to make sure the calf is ok. Then if it is ok I will do it again with the running on Monday. I'm itching to get back at it, especially as dh is doing it too and is moving on.
Well done everyone who is moving forward with it. My sister started last night too so it's definitely catching round here.

Whoopee high fives the thread... Week 1 complete, but I need new trainers as my middle toe hurts

Well done everyone else, welcome to all newbies and yes do it to all who are thinking about doing it!

Just back in from W2R1- I was worried it'd be too hard but I bloody did it and enjoyed it to boot. I feel so much fitter than just this time last week doing the first run, it really works! It will also have helped considerably that I weigh 1/2 stone less than this time last week too, I imagine.

You done it yet, rusmum? Grin

style try a better pair of socks before you buy new trainers- my middle toe hurt before but I realised I was wearing crappy old socks!

abbylou glad it feels better :)

Thanks rebecca, I've been doing Slimming World for 3 months and lost 3 stone so far, but the running seems to have made a massive difference. Still got a long way to go yet though

Well done, Kew. Anything faster than a walk is a run - it really doesn't matter if you are slow.

rusmum · 06/01/2012 21:34

hello, well done!!! (ish!) ran 1st 3 times, walked fast next 2 runs and ran last 3. How long is 60 seconds? Treating today as a trial and saying that sun is day 1 lol !! Enjoyed it in a funny way but am so unfit it was tough. and my shins hurt???. I will be doing zumba on wii tomorrow. everyone else doing the my fitness pal thing?

geekmum it's really worked for me, it is a very healthy sustainable diet. I enjoy the meetings too, I'd recommend it to anyone. W2 is not as bad as you think it might be!

madness if you're aching a lot why not try having 2 rest days? That's what I did after w1r1. They did get easier, promise :)
