So, here we have our nice new little thread. No food type is banned from being mentioned. It is Xmas afterall Xmas Wink. So pull up a comfy chair, I've put a good film on the telly for you, put some logs on the fire and laid out some snacks. We have stollen, mince pies, chocs, shortbread, smelly cheese and crackers, wine and baileys.

Feel free to add anything else!

This thread will self destruct later in the new year, so don't worry about confessing to eating naughty nibbles, or putting on the odd pound (or 8).

Enjoy, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Xmas Grin

A lot of people feel down at this time of year. I was reading something this morning about after the 21st Dec, energies changing or something like that (can you tell I wasn't paying much attention?)
I do hope those of you feeling down start to feel a bit brighter soon.
I freak out sometimes, panicking about people dying and scary things happening. The only way I can cope with it is to make myself stop thinking about it. Easier said than done but I can't spend my life worrying about something that may never happen.

Huffpot · 10/01/2012 15:56

Hi all...hope your're keeping your chin up Bee...just hold onto hope

We had a few dramas here last night too. My elderly mother in law lives with us (85 in March( and she can be an awkward old cow difficult at times and quite nasty. Herself and DH had an argument last night about something trivial and DP lost his temper and told her (not for the first time) that if she was going to be like that then she could get out. DP tends to have a short fuse but calms down quickly. So after her soaps finished she went upstairs, packed some plastic bags, told me she was never coming back and she'd had enough of him and mught take an overdose and off she toddled to his sister's across the road(literally).
Now in the meantime DP has calmed down and apologised and told her he doesn't want her to go but off she went
So now its an awkward situation. I'm quite happy for us to have the house to ourselves but not in this way. Her and I rub along ok now but it was a nightmare at first and she has been awful to me.
I feel horrible (even though its nothing to do with me) because I know DP will end up being really upset about it when his initial annoyance has passed and it will upset the kids who won't understand where she is -especially if they see her and she doesn't speak to them.

I was at a playgroup this morning and she's been in and got a few bits.

Oh I hate stuff like this!!!

Huffpot · 10/01/2012 15:57

Sorry for the massive whiny post -just needed to vent :-)

kid · 10/01/2012 16:12

It's good to vent, gets it off your chest and takes some weight off your shoulders.
I hope it works itself out soon.

TheScarlettPimpernel · 10/01/2012 17:49

Oh Huff that sounds like a bit of a strain altogether. Vent away: it's that or scoffing an entire trifle (or would be for me!)

My friend is coming round shortly. She just needs food (which I can supply in vast quantities) and a shoulder (ditto). I hope I can think of the right things to say Sad

Hope y'all have a good evening on DOOMSDAY EVE bwaaaa-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Cheeseandbiscuits · 10/01/2012 18:18

huffpot you deserve a medal just for having your MIL live with you! I wouldn't have the patience. It sounds like hard work, I hope things work out.

TSP I hope you have a nice evening with your pal. She is probably just looking forward to a friendly face and some nice food. I wouldn't worry about saying the wrong thing.

Biggest loser on tv tonight, yippee!

mrswoodentop · 10/01/2012 19:23

Just rejoined for another try,got totally distracted by hip problems and work in Sept but have decided that this is my last chance and I don't want to hit 50 as a fat person.
A new group has opened in the next village so went along last night, didn't really take to the leader and it's a good job I had done SW before because if I hadn't l would have been totally lost, but the time and location are good,so will stick with it.

Dc and I just had the stir fried ginger turkey in the quick meals book ,it was delish and went down really wellGrin

kid · 10/01/2012 19:28

TSP you mentioned tower hamlets recently, you must me near me, I'm in the next borough.

happynewRia · 10/01/2012 19:57

I had to google Tower Hamlets to find out where it is , I am such a bumpkin. DS1 is going to London on a school trip in April. I am trying not to panic yet!

huffpot, you do indeed deserve a medal. My MIL can piss me off just by phoning 3 times a year. I remember my lovely gran in her late 80s/early 90s though, and she could be "difficult" when she wanted to be. She could be really horrible to my mum who visited her twice a day 6 days a week, but all sweetness and light to her brother who used to go once a week. Hope it sorts itself out.

So, successfully SW-ing, fit ladies - talk to me about pilates. Any thoughts? I never seem to get very far because I find the breathing confusing!

welcome back mrsWTSmile

Cheeseandbiscuits · 10/01/2012 20:04

Ooh I used to live in Tower hamlets, Wapping to be exact. I love East London but we are now West Londoners due to work.

Welcome back mrswoodentop!

ria Pilates is great at building up core muscles and toning. I did it after having DD, a good intro back to exercise. Give it a go.

hedge sorry you are having sleepless nights.

happynewRia · 10/01/2012 20:07

also had to google Biggest Loser to find out where that blonde trainer had gone. Sad now I feel guilty for thinking she maybe wasn't very nice.Blush
DH said last week that the guy voted off last week was almost identical his 22yo DSShock (I haven't seen him for a couple of years, he has blanked us since he last came to stay when DH's XW ran out of patience with him, but DH went to see him at christmas). Hope DH is recording tonights episode.

happynewRia · 10/01/2012 20:08

am I right in thinking it's good for back problems? (Pilaes that is, not the biggest loser!)

kid · 10/01/2012 20:49

I think pilates is good for back problems because it works on your posture which is often the cause of back problems.
I got a pilates video (thats how long ago it was!) but I only watched it once and never actually did it.

I did a lovely chicken and bacon hotpot tonight. Everyone ate it which means it must have been tasty. It seemed to take ages to prepare (chopping carrots, bacon, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, chicken) but after that part, it all goes in an oven proof dish for 1 1/2 hours so that part is fine. Ours wasn't ready until almost 7 as I didn't realise how long it was going to take. It didn't matter though as I had to pick DH up from work. I hate driving in the city, its the worst place to drive as all the mad city peeps just walk out in front of you and don't get me started on all those cyclists!

debka · 10/01/2012 20:55

Just back from group, shall I tell you how I did? Was slightly disappointed, seeing as I'd run 4 times this week, but I think I may have oversynned a bit too Blush, need to get organised with a good snack for after my run rather than eating a massive bowl of cereal

kid your hotpot sounds yum. My aunt did SW cottage pie with baked beans, never had beans and cottage pie before but I'm a convert now Grin

huffpot hope your situation with MIL resolves, sounds like hard work.

kid · 10/01/2012 20:59

I always have baked beans with cottage pie. Smile

Cheeseandbiscuits · 10/01/2012 21:00

Aah debka don worry, maybe you've converted fat to muscle?

ria it's great for bad backs!

kid · 10/01/2012 21:02

debka I do believe that when you exercise, the fat goes to muscle which is heavier even though I've been told its not.
Best thing to do is measure yourself so you will know if you are shrinking even if you aren't losing loads of weight.

debka · 10/01/2012 21:11

That's what they said at group. I lost 2lb which is good, especially since I managed 7lb the week before Shock, so not worried. I measured myself when I started SW, may borrow my mum's tape measure again and see if I've dropped some inches!

FriendofDorothy · 10/01/2012 21:31

I always put baked beans in my shepherds pie!

Pilates is brilliant for bad backs - it is all about focusing on core stability, ie. stomach and back muscles, or the corset muscles as they call them. I am hoping to start back at Pilates this week.

Was this the thread where people weigh in?

Cheeseandbiscuits · 10/01/2012 21:32

It is indeed the thread!
Tomorrow is weigh in. Pm me your deets and I publish them at some point in the evening!

FriendofDorothy · 10/01/2012 21:34

Okay dokey. I will try and remember to weigh in tomorrow as well as my usual Thursday - I usually weigh in that day to try and keep up with my old SW friends at group!

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/01/2012 21:43

Evening :).

Need to get back into the habit of logging food.

B: Wholewheat spaghetti. Pear.
L: couple of mouthfuls of leftover chicken & spinach curry. Then mushroom, peppers, onion omelette with baked beans.
D: Chilli (lots of veggies in it) with cauliflower rice
snack: apple

happynewRia · 10/01/2012 21:45

my favourite is cottage pie with canned marrowfat peasBlush DH made the most yummy cottage pie last night (non SW) and I finished it off for lunch today (got to build my strength upWink), no canned peas though. Green beans, sprouts and root veg mash. Homebaked (frozen) fish and chips today. The kids had fish finger pie, which looks, and probably tastes as bad as it sounds. It is my sisters recipe and one of the only things her fussy kids eat.

am working up the courage to do a menu plan/shopping list, but have a feeling DHs long-awaited cheque won't be clearing this week either, so we will be on a very tight budget.

have a pilates book upstairs, wonder if I can sneak in a DVD without DH noticingHmm I don't suppose there's a Wii game?

happynewRia · 10/01/2012 21:57

debka - In this months SW mag one of the success stories said she trained for the race for life by running 3x a week on her Wii fit. As a current C25k-er, what do you think? (or anyone who has done it before) I can't keep up with the c25k threads, and still haven't started, so don't want to post. What is the weight loss like on that thread?

kid · 10/01/2012 22:40

I started c25k briefly but it didn't last as I was to embarassed to run in daylight and to scared to run at night. I did read that it changes your body shape quite quickly, particularly your legs.

I am tempted to try it again at the gym but i've not been very good with going gym recently. I am going gym on Thursday come rain or shine but I won't be doing any jogging as its a class I'm attending.

Give the jogging a try. I think you need to do it for 2 weeks (6 runs) before deciding if its for you or not. I only made it to day 3 and then just stopped as it got too cold and I got too lazy.
