Anyone care to join me on the Couch to 5k? Apparently it takes 9 weeks. I have downloaded the NHS podcasts and now I just have to get going. Eeek!

Dd and I have just started, run 2 is tonight!

Done it before and love it!

SofaKingOld · 04/09/2011 10:12

Just downloaded it to iTunes & listening to it now (while sitting on the couch - but it's a start!!).

I'm going to do it with my 11 year old DS as we both need to exercise more.

I can't see anything to say how many times you need to run a week - was going to aim for 3 or 4 times a week but not sure if that's enough.

Now I just need to work out how to down load it to my phone.............

SofaKingOld · 04/09/2011 18:26

We did it!

Really enjoyed it but went through the woods so I wasn't running in public as not particularly confident about these things.

Have you managed your first run yet FringMonkey?

Spamspamspam · 07/09/2011 10:10

I am in! Started today but didn't do the official C25K just took my dog out for a walk which is normally a 5K walk and I have been trying to walk fairly quickly. Today I introduced some running, only about 10 minutes in sequences of 1 minute, 1.5 minutes and even managed a 3 minute at one point. I used to run a few years ago and in three months managed to run about 9K so looking forward to starting this up again - good luck everyone!

SofaKingOld · 11/09/2011 08:19

We did W1R3 on Friday after school and boy did I struggle!

Just didn't have any energy and the walks in the intervals ended up being uphill (& v steep) so didn't get a chance to recover.

DS1 (11) did really well though and he was very encouraging. We're both going out in half an hour for W2R1 and have had a porridge for breakfast (even though I'm low carbing). We'll go along the canal as it's flat so I can get the breaks between running to catch my breath.

I'm enjoying this so much more than I thought I would.

Hope you're all getting on OK.

knittynoodle · 13/09/2011 10:44

I meant to start last week and didnt because... well, im lazy... BUT! I plan to start again tonight! Any tips?!

Babieseverywhere · 14/09/2011 20:38

I have just started C25K, can I join ? I did first run on Monday, second run tonight and plan to do third run on Friday :)

SofaKingOld · 17/09/2011 17:19

How did you get on Babieseverywhere?

Have you managed to get started knittynoodle?

I've only noticed a difference after my w2r3 - I really enjoyed it and my breathing felt much better. W3R1 in the morning - I've listened to it and you run for 3minutes at a time - eek. Double what I've done up to now.

I've been looking at 5K runs - if I sign up and commit to sponsorship then I have to keep going!

Babieseverywhere · 17/09/2011 18:12

My third run went ok, did 1.57 miles and felt tired but OK when I finished.

No idea how I am going to run 90 seconds on Monday for the second week run but I am going to do it or die trying or cry ;)

Babieseverywhere · 17/09/2011 18:13

Wow, signing up for a 5K run, brave woman !

Well done for sticking with it octopusinabox. What are your plans after week 9?

Babieseverywhere I found the increase up to 90 second daunting too, but if I'm honest it wasn't that bad. The good thing is the increments are quite small so it's gradual. I've just got back from W3R1 and did notice a difference from W2 as it was my first 3 minute run - just had to pace myself. Amazing to think that 2 weeks ago I was quite literally sitting on the couch!

My DS1 (11) is doing really well too.

I did W2R1 earlier an it was easier than I expected, certainly better run than Fridays (W1R3)

I liked the two minute runs and found I had a better pace and controlling my breathing better. I ran less distance only 1.5 miles but felt much better :)

Can't wait for Wednesday's run, just hope aerobics is alright tomorrow. The new routine is causing my right knee to ache, no such problem while I run, go figure !

Babieseverywhere · 21/09/2011 21:47

Did Week Two, Run Two this evening and it was fine. Looking forward to Friday's run.

SofaKingOld · 22/09/2011 20:30

Babieseverywhere it's strange isn't it? I found that too. Nearly died on W1R3 but was much better on W2.

I've got my last W3 run tomorrow then on to the scary stuff of week 4! Running for a whole 5 minutes. I really shouldn't peek at the next podcast.

I've decided to sign up for a local charidee 5K at the end of October. I'll be on week 8 by then so think I'll be able to have a good bash at it.

I've not measured my distance yet as not been brave enough to switch that app on. I've decided not to train inbetween runs - hope your aerobics went well. I was doing 30DS but was getting really sore hips. I think it was the side lunges as I've been much better since I stopped. I think I'll get more out of running in the long term than 30ds.

Keep going!

Babieseverywhere · 22/09/2011 22:25

Aerobics was fine, it seems to be getting easier or is running much harder IYSWIM

I am worrying about tomorrow night when DH & I have to fit in both our runs & showers and tea and getting out the house by 6pm for school concert.

Think I'll have to be ready the run the moment DH gets home to watch the kids and I'll make tea while he runs. Arghh, can't exercise and have a life, LOL. Or maybe treat ourselves to chip shop chips after the concert instead ?

Babieseverywhere · 24/09/2011 22:29

Did Week 2 Run 3 today (too busy yesterday to fit it in) and found that by putting my phone on my armband, it stopped me looking at the time all the time, therefore ran better.

First four runs were fine but I struggled with 5th and 6th runs being tired at that point. Covered 1.62 miles, which pleased me :)

Long way to go, I can't see how this will translate to 3.2 miles in the next 6 weeks. But I'll see how the Week 3 Run 1 on Monday go !

SofaKingOld · 25/09/2011 16:30

Well done Babieseverywhere. You'll be fine tomorrow with your 3 minute runs. I've found I can get my breathing and pace a bit better the longer I go (up to 5 minutes Wink)

I did W4R1 this morning and loved it! My breathing seems to be much better. Looked a bit of a weirdo though as was grinning when had managed the 5 minutes running.

I booked my place on a 5k at the end of October this morning.

SofaKingOld · 30/09/2011 17:31

How are you all getting on in the heat? I've just finished W4R3 and feel like I'm melting!!

Babieseverywhere · 30/09/2011 19:30

I twisted my knee :( No running this week and I have missed it so much. I am going mad. I need a break from my lovely kids and my running/aeorbics classes are my break IYSWIM.

SofaKingOld · 30/09/2011 19:47

Oh no babieseverywhere. Wondered why you'd not been on here I'm not a stalker really.

Will you be able to get back to it soon? Lots of ice?

Babieseverywhere · 30/09/2011 21:00

My DH has done our his three week runs but bless him , he is going to redo them next week with me. I am hoping to get running again on Monday but DH said until I am 100% pain free I must not do any. I am not a patient person and I'm worried that by the time I get back to running, I'll be so unfit I'll keal over.

I had an ice bandage yesterday (one use one) and that was very nice. :)

Ginger4justice · 01/10/2011 11:14

Can I Join?
I'm currently downloading the nhs podcasts and I'm determined to start tomorrow. Well if DD goes to bed without too much fuss anyway. Bit scared as I am very unfit, haven't really done any exercise since morning sickness kicked in and I'm a lot heavier as well so it's going to be harder. Started a Zumba class last week which I survived so hopefully I'll be able to do this!

Babieseverywhere · 01/10/2011 11:57

Yeah, new people the more the merrier :)

Don't worry about being heavy, I am 16 1/2 stone :(

But I have lost some weight (down from bursting out of a 24 to 22/20 dress size) recently and hope to lose more by eating healthier and exercising. Assuming my poxy leg heals :(

My new running shorts arrived this morning, I want to try them out. But knee still hurting. Off to doctors tomorrow.
