Anyone care to join me on the Couch to 5k? Apparently it takes 9 weeks. I have downloaded the NHS podcasts and now I just have to get going. Eeek!

Can I join? I started ages ago, got to week 6 and then summer holidays got in the way. I've just started again, went back to R1W4 which was great, really enjoyed it, then this morning pressed the wrong bit on my phone and got R2W6 and thought; stuff it I'll give it a go, and finished! Yeah, feeling really positive, will do the same run next time and then start W6 next week.

ohijustdontknowanymore · 06/11/2011 21:48

Hi Guys, can I join you. Have been lurking for awhile but not brave enough to post.

Started couch to 5k 4 weeks ago and been doing okay, actually found weeks 1 and 2 the most difficukt ones.

I went out tonight to du wk 4 run 3 but got a stitch 8 mins before end, first time this has happened to me. Was so painful had to come home.

Any ideas on why I sddenly got a stitch tonight but have been lucky enough to not have suffered previously.

Babieseverywhere · 07/11/2011 21:02

Sofa, Well done on the improvement on tackling the hill. Well done and Eww on the Zumba, I can see you breaking the seal and the sweat?.oh my eyes are burning !

Liz79, Well done on finishing Week One with your friend and for getting your DK to join in too.

emskaboo Welcome to the thread. Sounds like you are bombing along. Look forward to hearing about Week Six, next week.

ohijustdontknowanymore Welcome to the thread also. Sorry to hear about your stitch, hope it doesn't happen again next time.

My Update
Today I did Week Seven Run One, another 25 minute run.

Better 25 minute run than Saturday but I kept touching the front balance bar of the treadmill for a few seconds here and there, as my tiredness was affecting my balance again. But far less than I did Saturday and my breathing was much better.

I think it is going to take the rest of Week Seven runs for me to get use to running 25 minutes properly. That is not a problem, I will keep trying until I do it properly. :)

Liz79 · 08/11/2011 21:52

Week 2 run 1 today. Much harder to run 90 seconds than 60! I was also pushing 18 month old DS in his buggy though & DH reckons that would make it considerably more difficult. I can't imagine running for 3 minutes next week. We went round a different park today as it was during the day but next one will be the evening so it will be on the pavements which is a more hilly route. It's really hard but feel good after.

Babieseverywhere · 09/11/2011 14:39

Liz Well done :) Especially pushing a buggy, it must make it harder !

My update
Week Seven Run Two covering 2.22 Miles

Kinda had an early birthday celebration last night, so started this run tired and hungover.

Really poor run, very tired and started flagging after only 5 minutes running. The last eight minutes was particularly hard. Also I was often using balance bar. However felt much better once I finished, LOL

Note to self, don't drink alcohol the night before a run day !

SofaKingOld · 09/11/2011 20:12

Hi everyone

Been a bit busy so not been able to check in. Good to see some others on here. Hopefully we can all offer support to each other as we get super fit!

My legs are sore today. Ran yesterday and was tired as had friends round the night before. Really had to force myself to go out but managed the 28 minutes even though I thought i was going to die. I think I should borrow babies note to herself.......

I've just stuffed my face as was really hungry and now I'm regretting it Sad . I even knew I was full and still kept going.

babies that's a really respectable distance for your time Smile

jumblies · 10/11/2011 12:51

Hi guys,
Do you mind if I jump in and ask a question? I am starting the couch-5km soon but would like to do it to my own music as I think it will motivate me more. Does anyone know if there is a way to download a version which lets to put your own music in. TIA

Liz79 · 10/11/2011 13:25

There are apps you can get. I tried a couple of free ones but wasn't impressed & didn't want to pay. I like the nhs podcasts. I'm on android BTW, don't know if iPhone might be different.

Babieseverywhere · 10/11/2011 18:25

Thanks Sofa :)

jumblies, We use Rundouble, play your own playlist with the C25K runs. You get the first three weeks free and if you like it, it costs £2 ish to buy. We bought it, worth every penny rather than listen to NHS music choice a moment later.

My Update
I did a free run to make up for the fact tomorrow is my birthday and I am unlikely to find time to run. I redid Week One, Run One...running a lot harder and faster than I did the first time around :) I was running over 6 MPH for my run bits yeah :)

SofaKingOld · 10/11/2011 20:47

Happy Birthday for tomorrow Babies Smile

jumblies · 10/11/2011 22:25

thanks for that babies, I just know I won't be able to do the longer periods of running without listeing to something I love. I'm off on holiday for a couple of weeks but am all fired up and ready to go when I get back....just hope it doesn't start snowing as soon as I start as hate treadmill running!

jumblies · 10/11/2011 22:26

Oh and Happy birthday for tomorrow!

Liz79 · 11/11/2011 21:21

Week 2 run 2: much easier than the last one but then I had no buggy tonight. It was more uphill though. Friend now has podcasts on iPhone & somehow our times were out. I finished run 6 as she finished run 5 so I did an extra 90sec run to keep her company.feel good for having done an extra run. Right shower & bed now, I have also had a busy 12 shift at work today.

SofaKingOld · 12/11/2011 18:55

Well done Liz. I'm in awe at doing that after a 12 hour shift. When DS and I run together we have to synchronise the podcasts 3...2.....1.....go! We sometimes don't manage it thought and just agree one to go with.

Enjoy your holiday Jumblies! We'll see you when you get back.

How was your birthday Babies? Hope you had a good one.

Babieseverywhere · 12/11/2011 19:27

Jumblies, Enjoy your holiday

Liz, Wow, hard core exercising after an 12 hour work shift

Sofa Thanks I had a lovely day, yesterday and we have opened my birthday wine with small amount of birthday chocolate to go with it, yum yum.

My update
Today I finished Week Seven Run Three, just 2.2 miles.

This is my fourth 25 minute run and I think I am getting the hang of it. Still find it long but I'm getting half way before I even think about how long I have to go IYSWIM.

Again I am clock watching too much, I might try wearing the phone again but it drives me batty when I have no idea how long I have left to go.

Well, that is Week Seven done, onto 28 minute runs next week in Week Eight. :)

Liz79 · 13/11/2011 20:56

Last run of week 2, hard but manageable. Bring on week 3!

SofaKingOld · 14/11/2011 06:30

Hi All

Hope everyone's had a good weekend.

My update
We made it to week 9!! I went out by myself as DS not feeling too great. Wasn't expecting a good run as had had a bit of a stressy day - but it was fab!! My pace has increased quite a bit so got further at my halfway point than I ever have before. Breathing was a bit off but had to just keep going back to concentrating on it. Booked in for a parkrun on Saturday so hopefully will make a respectable time.

Good luck for week 3 Liz

Liz79 · 16/11/2011 07:53

Well done sofa. We have done w3r1 & it was easier than we expected. Almost disappointed there wasn'tanothrr run at the end, it seemt shorter than usual

QuantitativeSneezing · 16/11/2011 21:34

Hello all, please may I join you?

Have just been on my first run and am still alive! Have done absolutely zero exercise since dd1 was born and its her 4th birthday today, so that and a quick read through this thread inspired me to start. Feeling pretty good and positive at the mo (although have a feeling my calves will be complaining in the morning!) but I know what I'm like and need to make sure I keep it up. Do you have any tips on how to force yourself to keep going out there? Or can you just bully me into it on Fri night when I'm planning to do w1r2?!

Babieseverywhere · 17/11/2011 21:22

QuantitativeSneezing, Welcome, well done on doing your first run. No pushing required, after a couple of runs you'll get addicted to running and want to get going ;)

Liz, I know what you mean as the runs reduce in number it seems to be not enough running, even if the amount you are running overall is the same IYSWIM.

Sofa, Congratulations on getting to week nine, soon you'll be the first graduate of C25K (on this thread)

My Update
I had a short 4 day break from running and I think I really needed it. I ran Week Eight Run One today and it was good. Breathing good and at the end I almost kept on going for the final 2 minutes but I didn't at the end ;) Covered 2.5 miles in 38 minutes. And in the 28 minutes of running I ran 2.25 miles straight !

Babieseverywhere · 17/11/2011 21:26

Sofa Forgot to add, good luck at your Park Run. Tell us what it is like, when you have been ?

We have one near us, I'm hoping to get to ours next week (babysitters permitting) I have already registered so I am ready to go. Bit worried I'll be too slow for them. Have to check before I go.

SofaKingOld · 19/11/2011 18:12

Hi

Liz -that's great that you want to do more!

Quantitative - Babies is right about wanting to go. I can't think of a word for it but I kind of itch to go if I've not been for a while.

Babies - That's a fantastic time for week 8 and it's great that you've registered with parkrun. Check out the event results page for this week for your local one. I'd pretty much guarantee you that you'll be fast enough. A local care home take their residents every now and then to our local one apparently - how great is that?

I know what you mean about the break - I had one last week too and felt like I just needed to re-charge. I know it sounds silly but I worry if I don't go at least 3 times a week every week I'll lose my fitness. I know missing 1 run is OK, but I still worry as I've worked so hard to get here!

My parkrun this morning was great. I let DS go ahead of me at his own pace and he got 30mins 44!! I got 31min 57 which is such an achievement for me and much as I don't like to blow my own trumpet - I was well chuffed. I've been on a high and walking round like this Grin all day. I struggled a bit mentally as there were no markers and I didn't have Laura plugged in (only because DSs earphones broke).

You might want to check where the nearest loo is at the beginning of the race. The nearest one to the start today was a mile away so I ended up in a bush! Sorry if that's TMI.

Will be going in a couple of weeks again. Hope you get your babysitting sorted. Now I've been round our track I think I could go with DS2 in his buggy if I really really have to.

QuantitativeSneezing · 19/11/2011 20:09

Wow sofa, huge congrats on your run this morning. Not that I have any idea about timings, but the fact that you were just behind ds sounds impressive to me - keeping up with the younguns! I can't imagine being able to run 30 mins in one go, so hearing about you guys makes it seem like an achievable goal.

I went out last night to do w1r2 but by mistake did w2 instead! It was tough but I survived, looking forward to going back to week 1 tomorrow!

Babieseverywhere · 19/11/2011 21:20

Sofa OMG, 31min 57 is brilliant ! What an achievement. I am so proud of you. :) I am not surprised that you feel great, you should.

Totally get the worrying about missing a run. Though I needed a short break, not running for four days, made me quite down and lacking in energy. It was so ace to get back to running (NEVER thought I would say/think that)

Oh, toilets is one of my big things. I have IBS and when I stress about things it gets much worse. That said, my symptoms have improved since I lost a couple of stone and cut out bread/potato/pasta/cows milk/cream.

But I will not let this stop me doing things. I want to have a go at running outside and I really hope to do a park run next week. Put in my case I am aiming to improve my PB of 49 minutes, LOL. TBH completing the race would be fantastic :)

I did Week Eight Run Two today, after we got back from a nice walk around a lovely country park with our children. DH ran a mile around the lake whilst I was playing with DC at the children's play area.

But I as I was running I thought 'why stop at 28 minutes, it's only another 2 mins for 30 minutes' So I ran the extra 2 minutes, 30 minutes in total :)

I think running is 90% mental attitude, if you know you can do it, you will do it. Doubt yourself and you'll give up and fail. Or is that just me.

Either way running rocks :)

PS. I have an Rowing machine now (off Ebay), tis fun but not as good as running but I can really feel my butt ;)

Babieseverywhere · 19/11/2011 21:24

QuantitativeSneezing, Believe me, if I can run for 30 minutes anyone can. I thought I was going to die on weeks 1 to 3 of C25K. My breathing started getting better in week 4.

I use to stagger off my treadmill and sit on my bed feeling dizzy and deep breathing for 5 minutes before I had the energy to go for my shower. These days I just walk off treadmill and wander off to the shower straight away. :)
