Anyone care to join me on the Couch to 5k? Apparently it takes 9 weeks. I have downloaded the NHS podcasts and now I just have to get going. Eeek!

Thanks everyone.

This thread is great for moral support.

Quantitative you'll be running for longer stretches of time before you know it Smile

Babies you're so right about mental attitude & running. When I did the first 5K my goal was to just finish. That was it. The really hard work is all the time put in between the timed runs. I really hope you get your sitter sorted & sorry to hear you were feeling down last week. You'll be feeling great this time next weekSmile

You'll probably find your time is faster than when you're at home as something kicks in when it's a race. I abandon the five minute warm up walk and start from running.

I have IBS too but have found it's massively improved since following a low carb diet. I know I need to slowly start introducing carbs back in soon as I can't keep losing weight indefinitely but I'm worried about the IBS returning. I always thought that it was dairy that caused some of my symptoms but I've been fine with dairy since the low carbs.

You really did make me LOL with your running machine Grin

Running does rock!!

coocoocachoo · 20/11/2011 19:38

Ah lovely, a c25k thread. Please may I join as I cold really use the moral support. I'm on wk3r3 and looking for all sorts of excuses not to go out tonight! Now I've been on here, I'm definitely going to go! Now where are my trainers......

SofaKingOld · 20/11/2011 20:29

Hi coocoo

Welcome to the thread - you'll get lots of moral support here. You've done really well to get to W3R3 Smile.

I hope you managed to make it out earlier. It's that feeling when you get home that makes it all worth while.

We went running today on a different route today to make the most of the light. We got lost, DS1s shoe came off in the mud and I had to call DH to come and get us as we'd gone too far to get home as DSs legs were aching from the run yesterday - it was fab Grin.

You should see the state of my trainers...............

Babieseverywhere · 21/11/2011 13:16

Sofa, Losing weight is not something I have to worry about. I have lost around 3 stone recently and have several more to lose ! My DH has decided that he can't possible go to the park run this week, but will go the week after Hmm Like a week will make a difference to our running ability ? But I'll post how we get on if/when we get there

coocoo, Welcome to the thread :) Congrats on completing the first three weeks.

My Update
C25K Week Eight Run Three. I had no energy and had to slow down a couple of times but finished 46 minutes of run/walking covering 2.73 miles. :) Moving onto last week - Week Nine on Wednesday !

SofaKingOld · 21/11/2011 18:37

Babies well done on that weight loss. That's great. Shame about your DH not wanting to do the park run yet. A bit of male pride? The good thing about parkrun is it's on every week so it's not a major hassle if you can't go one week.

I was rumbled by a colleague today. He rang me to ask if I'd done the run on saturday as he'd seen my name on the results page when he'd ben looking for another of our colleagues. Apparently he'd done it a few weeks ago. He's aiming for under 20mins!!!!!

Yay - you'll soon be a graduate. I think they need a certificate you can print when you've completed it Grin

Babieseverywhere · 21/11/2011 22:13

Sofa So what did you colleague say ?

I just hope DH doesn't chose a week I'm on my period, I would still run but not as happily IYSWIM.

SofaKingOld · 22/11/2011 19:49

He just chatted about what a good course it was and how a kid on a bike had nearly tripped him up. I've lost a lot of weight and not really kept the running a secret as I've been singing Laura's praises Grin

I know what you mean about exercising when you've got your period. You can't really give it your all.

Babieseverywhere · 23/11/2011 19:51

Singing Laura's praises, you are obsessed in a good way ;)

I did Week Nine Run One today and a bit more, covering 2.73 miles in 45 minutes (with walking) Didn't do 30 minutes straight I slowed down too earlier but did another 5 minutes running to make sure I had done enough. All in all not a good run but I feel great having finished it.

SofaKingOld · 23/11/2011 20:14

Well done for finishing Babies. I think even with the runs which aren't great I'm still doing a lot more than I was 3 months ago. You're nearly a graduate Smile

We went out tonight, DS ran into a bush and hurt his thumb and broke his earphones (again) so wasn't the best run. His pace and rhythm really go off when he's not running to music. We only did just under 4K as he'd had enough and I wasn't going to push him.

I am obsessed!! I work for the NHS and it astounds me that none of us has heard of it before. Actually, that's a lie, it doesn't surprise me as the DH always hides the good stuff on their website.

Babieseverywhere · 23/11/2011 20:29

I know, just two runs away ! I really hope I do it, as I never finish anything.

Poor DS...did you laugh when in ran into the bush ?

Are you going to move onto Bridge to 10K podcasts ?

SofaKingOld · 24/11/2011 18:55

I've promised DS that I'll continue to run with him and not do any training he can't do. He's too young to do much more than 5K (the athletics association have got some guidance on it).

We're just going to keep going with 5k and try to improve on our time. In reality there's a lot of room for improvement! I really want to do the great north run but it will have to wait a couple of years until he's old enough.

I also realise that in these circles DH is not the same as DH at work which is department of health. My DH has not been going round hiding things on NHS web pages. Wink

Babieseverywhere · 24/11/2011 21:21

LOL at the double DH. I use to work for a Primary Care Trust so did read it in correct context, though I like the sound of your husband sneaking into NHS HQ just to hide a webpage ;)

So how old is your DS ? I think it is so lovely you run together. Our children are far to young at 1.5, 3.5 and 5.5 yo.

We are looking at B210K as DH has signed up for a 10k fun run next summer ! But I might do the 5K improve podcasts first.

QuantitativeSneezing · 25/11/2011 21:41

Hi all, just to let you know I'm still with you! Have just done w2r2, and man was it hard work! Had to force myself to go out then just had really heavy legs all the way round. Hoping that this is aminor glitch and not a.sign of things to come as the thought of having to do 3 min runs is already filling me with dread!

On a slightly more disturbing note, DH has just admitted to fancying Miss Hooley from Ballamory... Should I get him counselling or just go with the flow and get myself a green stripey cardigan?

SofaKingOld · 26/11/2011 20:20

Quantitative it get's easier - promise!!

The really hard work is in the first 5-6 weeks then it seems to get a bit easier. If I can do it then anybody can.

Oh dear lord - miss Hooley!! ShockI think the money should go on counselling rather than a green stripey jumper & dodgy hair band. It could have been worse - he could have fancied the bloke in the pink castle..............or PC plum.

Babieseverywhere · 28/11/2011 20:20

QuantitativeSneezing I do agree with Sofa that it gets easier.

That said I am really struggling on Week Nine, I think it is because I have started rowing and/or doing the 30 Day Shred DVD on my no-running days and my legs are far too stiff to run. I had to give myself today as a rest day and see how I feel tomorrow.

QuantitativeSneezing · 29/11/2011 06:56

Yikes sofa, I hadn't even thought of the PC Plum option, maybe I should count myself lucky!

W2r3 last night, and although I really struggled to get my lazy @rse out of the house, I actually really enjoyed it! Never thought I'd say that! The running was hard, but I wasn't desperate for each run to end like before. Also once I had stopped whpeezing regained my composure after each run, the adrenaline rush was really quite something. Have downloaded some trance tunes from my mispent youth, so I think that definately helped!

Babies are you in danger of becoming an exercise adict?!!

Babieseverywhere · 29/11/2011 08:22

I think I need to run and may be slightly addicted to that ;)

But the other stuff I do, so I can eat more Blush. If I do the shred dvd or row for 30 minutes that equals an evening treat especially at the weekend. I am only averaging 5 days of exercise a week through I hope to increase that to 6 days time permitting.

By making myself 'earn' my treats I have far less. Sometimes I fancy a snack and by the time I had dragged my gym clothes on, done some exercise and had a shower, I am no longer hungry or I realised I just was bored and doing the exercise was enough for me. Plus I am getting far healthier which is great :)

Babieseverywhere · 29/11/2011 08:25

Well done on finishing week two runs !

You ar right the post run feeling (or sometimes the post running interval feeling) is ace and really makes running worthwhile.

Babieseverywhere · 29/11/2011 17:46

I finished the Couch to 5K running program today !

Whilst I am not running the full 5k I will do one day and I also did the worse run of the nine weeks today barely 2.5 miles (go figure), yet the overwhelming feeling of achievement is wonderful :)

I did it ! I am so proud of myself. Can't wait for my next run, bet it will be a good one :)

SofaKingOld · 29/11/2011 17:53

Are you officially a C25K graduate yet Babies? I dropped the 30 day shred as I started C25K and that at the same time. It was too much. I'm thinking of going back to it though as I want my arms a bit more toned as I've got a sleeveless Shock dress to wear in a couple of weeks to a Christmas 'do'.

Well done quantitative. The after bit is so worth it.

I've come to the conclusion that running is a bit like decorating. You look forward to doing it, when you are actually doing it it's harder than you remembered (and may not always enjoy it) then afterwards you feel great.

I've taken a couple of days off as I have a bit of a viral thing (again) and my chest is a bit tight and using inhaler. Hoping it'll have settled by tomorrow so I can run. If it's not sorted by Thursday I'll be going to Zumba anyway - whether I can breathe or not!

Babieseverywhere · 29/11/2011 18:14

Yep, I have graduated. Now to actually do it properly and faster ;)

Sorry to hear about viral thingy, get well soon.

I like the decorating comparson, I do look forward to running and enjoy the post run glow (never thought I would say that) much more than the actual running on a bad day. But on a good day, running is just wonderful :)

SofaKingOld · 30/11/2011 18:14

Yay - Well done Babies!! I think we need to design a C25K graduation certificate Smile

I've given tonights run a miss and sending DH for a curry as not feeling up to it.

SofaKingOld · 02/12/2011 08:56

Could one of you kindly come on here and kick me up the bum if I've not reported by 8pm that I've done a run today.

Struggling to get back in the swing of it and my chests still not back to normal.......

SofaKingOld · 02/12/2011 18:03

OK. I kicked myself up the bum and I've just come back from a really good run with DS Xmas Grin.

GPS didn't work which is shame as it felt like a good one!!

I've been to see a podiatrist today to have a gait assessment and have some orthotics made. My hip was continuing to hurt and I realised if I didn't do something about it that it would potentially stop me running in the long term. I want to keep going!!

Babies hope you're still doing your parkrun tomorrow with your DH. Good luck with it and let us know how you get on Xmas Smile.

quantitative - have you made it out again? How did you get on?

Babieseverywhere · 02/12/2011 23:11

Sofa, Yeah, glad you kicked yourself and got out there for a good run. Boo hiss that the GPS didn't work. Hope they sort out your hips, let us know what happens.

We're not going to the Park run tomorrow, terrible weather plus I am really struggling with running this last week (due on, feel better next week I reckon). So am going to concentrate on getting better at home before running outside. All that matters if I keep on trying and running. I'll get there eventually. Thought I might try first run of Bridge to 10K tomorrow. Let you know how I get on.
