Why is it a sprint? Do you have to sprint for 5k Shock?

Helloooooo!!! Sorry for my prolonged absence! I just cant seem to find my motivation at the moment and although i'm still going to the gym, I still cant find the get up and go to eat the way i was when i lost my 23lb! I have been eating bread, rice, pizza and chips as well as drinking alcohol too. My excuse is that last week DP and I had a week off work so although i only work 2 days a week, he was in holiday mode which meant he wanted to have the odd beer or two most nights (and rightly so - he works so hard!) and so i'm afraid the green eyed monster in me came out and i managed to get him to bring home some wine "for us to share" (i.e. him one glass and me the rest Blush).

Now i have my Bognor fitness weekender coming up on Friday and I'm worried it's going to kill me as i've been under the weather with a nasally cold and now it's sitting on my chest, ggrr!! Just hope it goes by Friday!! As well as loads of exercise there will of course be even more alcohol involved. What a shame!! Wink

If that's not bad enough, i also have a fitness weekender in mid-October at Camber Sands but i'm truly hoping to at least get under 16 stone for that. I've been hovering around 16.2 and 16.3 for the last month.

I've just had the contraceptive injection too so i'm hoping that that isn't the cause of my lack of motivation and craving crap food. Hmm

Anyway, enough waffling, i'm just hear for a virtual kick up the backside and some decent motivational talking to please!!

Forever Well done on your triathlon!! You are so very very inspiring!!

Well done on everyone else's losses. I'm sorry i've not ready every thread on here since my last post but i hope to be able to catch up soon!!

After the summer hols, I am now back on Mfp and have tried the 30 day shred for the first time today. I have requested a few of you as friends, please accept or request me, my user name is hillyhilly, I only have a few pounds to lose, but without Mfp I struggle to ensure it doesn't gradually creep up.
RG, this won't at all be what you need to hear but I found it extremely difficult to lose weight when I was on the contraceptive injection, though that was a good few years ago now (I was on depo provera), I hope it's not that way for you.

inspireme · 13/09/2011 22:35

Hi all- feeling a bit crap today, baby belly seems to be getting bigger although I've been good and am not any heavier, but putting it down to the fact I've a gluten and dairy intolerance but I've been eating both so I hope I'm just bloated!!

It's so bloody annoying cos I will never have a flat stomach no matter how much weight I loose, at least when I was preggers I didn't notice it :)

Any one else have a gluten intolerance or a coeliac?

foreverondiet · 13/09/2011 22:56

Hello all!
Well I ran home from work again today, really enjoying being super-fit! Still have a triathlon ahead of me on 25th September. Getting body fat measured on friday in the gym, really hope I'll have made my target of 18%! Will need to find some new goals after that to keep me focused!

inspireme I don't have a gluten intolerance but don't eat much gluten and would find it easy to cut it out. I do find eating lots of wheat and refined carbs make me bloated so tend not to eat them. Also why will you never have flat stomach?

hillyhilly I am on MFP - and I am friends with you there. Will comment on any status updates etc you post! Good to get back to it.

RG I haven't had contraceptive injection but did take POP at one point which is similar, I think it stimulated appetite making it harder to diet. Or maybe thats in my imagination? Not sure.

giraffes well done on zumba & hope you are feeling better.

febes wow what amazing weight loss, am super impressed - you've lost more than me!

ohjust my runs home from work 7.5 miles (11.5km) and TBH the thought of this would have freaked me out earlier in the year. You need to break it down into smaller parts. It only took me 4 weeks to get from doing 5km comfortably to doing 11.5km comfortably, so worry about running for 5km for now. Look at the couch to 5km websites and work on that. If the runs in March have the 5km as a challenge for January.

afish wow a half marathon. I'm tempted to look for one now as am enjoying my running - best option for me I think is Blenheim half marathon on 2nd October..... am thinking about it!

wifezilla the insanity workout sounds mad! Can't believe you are doing it with so little sleep.

ladydeedy good analogy, I like Smile

carryon will add you!

carryon · 13/09/2011 23:14

Hi all. Haven't logged in to MFP today mostly laziness but also very busy at work. Have kept an eye on my intake though and think I am ok. Will be going for a run tomorrow.

ohijustdontknowanymore · 14/09/2011 07:39

Am struggling this week, having a down moment me thinks.

Sticking and logging everything on MFP but weight feels stuck this week. Official WI day Friday but usually on a Wednesday do a little check that I am going in the right direction. Stood on scales this morning and not moved since last week :-(

Went for a small run last night including a bit of walk/sprint but felt so slow and sluggish.

Hoping it will past as last 4 weeks have felt so positive about doing both MFP and overloading on exercise and have actually secretly enjoyed it. But just feels like a struggle this week which it hasnt before.

Will keep reading posts for inspiration :-)

RGPargy · 14/09/2011 13:46

Hi everyone!

Think i should have researched my contraceptive injection a bit more before actually having it! Yikes!! I've read that people gain a fair amount of weight when on it and also that people suffer from depression too. Eeek!

I am now thinking of not going back for my second injection and just getting DP to put up with using "something"! I'm so fed up with ME having to go through all the bloody misery of trying to find suitable contraception! Hmph!!

foreverondiet · 14/09/2011 13:54

rg wait and see how you are over the next few weeks before deciding whether to go ahead with 2nd injection. I have mirena and some find that a problem with weight gain but I got mine put in just as a stopped breastfeeding and started dieting and it hasn't been a prob, had no problem losing the weight. Otherwise how about normal non hormonal coil?

Those fitness weekends look great and must be expensive - stop eating the rubbish so that you are in better shape for them, you'll get more out of them.

OP posts:
RGPargy · 14/09/2011 14:04

Forever Yes you are right. I will of course see how i go over the next few weeks as the next jab isn't due until the end of November anyway. It's great that the mirena has worked for you. I've also heard that lots of people have had problems with it so i guess you just have to find something that works for you!

I did have the non-hormonal coil and had that taken out when i had the injection because both DP and I could feel it during sex and i was sick and tired of the heavy periods that wiped me out and made it really difficult to work out on the days when my legs felt really heavy during such heavy periods!

I am going to try my hardest to lay off the junk during the fitness weekender (which incidentally aren't THAT bad - around £90 each for the weekend). I will be taking my own breakfast and snacky foods, which will be healthy, so that i can use some sort of damage limitation at least!

foreverondiet · 14/09/2011 15:28

Only side effect of mirena for me seems to be no periods at all, which I don't mind Smile, I can't feel it. I don't know if it increased appetite as appetite reduced when I got it put in as that was when I stopped breastfeeding DS2, and I have managed appetite through MFP and learning how much is reasonable amount to eat.

re: pasta / bread / rice etc I am not tempted to eat. Maybe occasionally ie at that party with the amazing desserts and sushi but not every day. I love my flat stomach and not feeling bloated any more. Do have occasional biscuits but do seem to be able to pause after each one and ask myself if I am hungry.

OP posts:
afishcalledmummy · 14/09/2011 15:36

forever - I really enjoyed the race, and heartily recommend you do one too - it was great fun and I really felt like I'd achieved something. I feel like I've got my fitness back on track as I can go out and do a half marathon or a 60km bike ride at the weekend without it being too arduous/torturous, which is where I wanted to be. I still feel a bit stiff/sore from Sunday, but in a good way!

Unfortunately it's not going well for me weightwise this week. I did have a couple of glasses of wine on Monday night but have been really good with food, if a little low on exercise due to exhaustion/stiff/soreness, and have gained a pound this week! I know it's not fat, as I haven't had enough calories to gain a pound of fat, but it's depressing as hell! It means there is no chance of getting to my interim target by holiday (Sunday) but I'm trying not to let it get me down as I'm over 1/2 a stone down from where I started and at 9st10, or maybe a little less by the time we go, I'm not going to look gross in a bikini!

RG - I had the implant a few years ago and didn't get on with it. I put on a little weight as a result of the hormones, then had a "f*ck it" mentality and packed a whole lot more on rather than being sensible and losing the gained pounds. I think it's only natural to put on a bit when we change the hormone balance in our bodies, it's the way we manage it that counts! I'm sure things will settle down soon enough and you'll be back on track.

Here's hoping I've lost the erroneous pound (and some more) by Sunday!

inspireme · 14/09/2011 16:19

Foreverondiet I think it's really hard to cut gluten out of my diet as most breakfasts have carbs like cereals and bread and most lunches are based on some form of bread or pasta. Then there's the fact that there are so many other foods and sauces that have gluten in them too that u wouldn't even realise.

I will never have a flat stomach as I find it near impossible to cut gluten and dairy out completely, a diet avoiding these would be so bland for me that id rather have a bit of bloating and enjoy my food!

My symptoms disappeared during pregnancy which was great!

RGPargy · 14/09/2011 18:44

I think the fact that i have been ill with a chesty cold thing (without the blocked up nose!) has meant that perhaps i have been steering towards comfort food and my exercise has been down a little due to not being up to massive stints of cardio etc. Just about managed to keep up with my pump but today i really felt it as my chest still feels a little tight.

I think the eating is all in my head. Since reading about Forever still losing weight on her mirena, i have decided that i am trying to find excuses to NOT eat well and to munch on rubbish instead. Naughty me! Hmm I'm going to try and be as good as possible over the weekend, but from Monday I'll be back on track.

foreverondiet · 14/09/2011 19:14

inspireme i have totally changed the way I eat, every meal is different, and I will not be going back to how I was. I haven't given up dairy as it seems to agree with me (I only eat live natural yoghurt and cottage cheese) but I don't really eat any gluten, apart from occasional muesli (maybe once a week?)

I used to eat shredded wheat, shreddies or special k with milk for breakfast. now i have eggs. I used to have a sandwich for lunch now I have a big salad and fish (generally from a tin - tuna / mackeral / sardines). For dinner i used to stuff like lasagna or spag bolognaise, now almost never eat pasta, instead have meat / fish and veggies - with some low GI carbs (small portion) eg brown rice, quinoa, millet, pulses.

Its my choice to be slim and not bloated - and yes also no symptoms in pregnancy - and I do enjoy my food, but I eat very little processed food - don't buy sauces or anything like that (clearspring soya sauce is gluten free). I do realise what foods have gluten. But I am not avoiding gluten, more just cutting down on wheat.

afish think will leave half marathon until next year. dh having a go at me for disappearing off on sundays with car and leaving him with DC and no car. But sounds like you are very fit. if you want the pound off (plus more) by holiday cut out carbs just have a week of lean protein and veggies.

rg i think the hormones might just stimulate appetite a little but if you are sensible and watch what you eat you'll keep on losing. Interestingly since I got to my target weight I am hungrier, I think as I have less fat stores!

OP posts:
sweetcouchpotato · 14/09/2011 21:23

Hello ladies! You lot seem to have a good attitude and lots of motivation. May I join you?

I try to eat healthily (lean protein, lots of fruit and veg, brown bread/pasta/rice in moderation), but I often eat (and drink) the wrong things on the weekends and undo the hard work I've put in during the week. I exercise almost every day, either crosstrainer or circuit training/boxing/yoga on the Wii with some handweights thrown in once or twice a week. I joined MFP today and made it through my first day just under my calorie goal, hope I can keep it up for the rest of the week (and beyond). I feel very motivated atm, having seen how much weight I could lose in 5 weeks if I can keep this up. Grin

I've got the same user name on MFP, please feel free to add me!

RGPargy · 14/09/2011 22:03

Hello and welcome sweetcouchpotato :o Will add you on MFP!

Forever I've heard that it can cause depression - may i ask if you suffered anything like that with it? Chances are though that as you are doing alot of exercise your endorphins were/are pretty high anyway!

Wifezilla · 14/09/2011 22:24

hi everyone - great to see there's more of us now :O)

I am encouraged (sorry!) to hear that it's harder for others to lose once under 10 stone too - it's stopping me having a breakdown giving up! I did take measurements so will compare in a couple of weeks, however I really need to see the scale move too as I can't stay this heavy forever!

I am really enjoying Insanity and can already see an improvement my performance. It's still killing me but I can do more of the exercises for longer than I could last week. I'm also not sore the next day which make is easier to keep going.

I had a "feeling sorry for myself" moment this morning and ate DH's chocolate stash (he hasn't noticed yet!). I'm putting it down to lack of sleep with teething baby. As punishment I have logged it all on MFP, only cheating myself otherwise....Grin

ohijustdontknowanymore - I hope you've found your inspiration again! I know how you feel, I have days/weeks like that too

forever - how did your body fat measuring go?

foreverondiet · 14/09/2011 22:30

wifezilla yes I found it v hard to lose under 10 stone... I cracked it doing my version of dukan, basically low carbs low fat - but no protein only days, just protein and veggies each day.

rg no depression but TBH I am the least likely person to be depressed AND as you say with all the endorphins....

sweetpot will add you!

OP posts:
afishcalledmummy · 15/09/2011 08:17

Good morning!

I struggle with the idea of going no carb, because you need carbs (glycogen) to metabolise body fat for energy, and going no carb surely means you move onto using protein (ie muscle) as an energy source. I'd rather miss target than burn muscle to get to a number, whilst hanging onto body fat! Because I like to train hard I do maintain a reasonable level of carbs in my diet, as they are needed for energy! Having done sports nutrition courses, I now kind of focus on "fuel" rather than just food and make sure my diet is suitably balanced. I also get to avoid yicky energy gels on long runs by keeping my glycogen store fairly full.

Anyway, the naughty pound has gone, so I should be OK for another one (or two if it's just bloat) by Sunday.

sweetcouchpotato - will add you, welcome!

RG - I also have the mirena and have lost weight on it. If anything it improved my mood too (I was diagnosed with clinical depression in 09), and it's super for me! I had scratched around at other progesterone only contraceptives (can't take the pill) and had always discounted the mirena as they make a song and dance about it being for people who have had children and I haven't. Should have gone for it sooner - it's fab!

forever - fair enough, you have to balance family life with insane hobbies! Are there any local races that you can aim for next year so the family can come and support you? Maybe one around a village fete or similar so your children can do stuff whilst you're off running and then can cheer you coming in?

wifezilla - This was in the Telegraph this morning, so don't feel too bad about the chocolate! Best to just write off the morning and get back on track.

foreverondiet · 15/09/2011 10:18

afish my diet is not no carb, yesterday for example had around 120g carbs - from fruit (3 pieces), veggies, low fat dairy, tofu, a ryvita, 85% chocolate, linseed, couple of tiny biscuits etc, and would have more had I done any proper exercise (would have added something like quinoa or millet). But my diet is moderate carb, and higher protein (try and eat at least 100g of protein a day, including protein at each meal and one of my snacks) to ensure not burning muscle, I agree would rather not lose weight than burn muscle. Since I went higher protein & lower carb I am pretty sure (ie by monitoring fat % on scales) all weight loss has been fat.

Even when my carbs were lower (when I was doing dukan) still got some carbs from veggies and low fat dairy (never really did the protein only days) my weight loss seemed to be fat. The only time I lost weight other than fat (muscle/water?) was at the start of diet when not eating nearly as much protein. Those on dukan boast of good muscle definition due to all the protein.

My favourite diet book on this is by Tom Venuto.

re: the yucky carb gels, I get a stitch if I eat anything before I run, so I do use them for races. My next triathlon is at 11am so might chance small porridge in morning as run will not be until after 12.

ariadnestar · 15/09/2011 11:43

Hi everyone - can I join you? I've been using MFP on and off since I had my DD 17 weeks ago, and have lost 7lbs of baby weight, but I need a bit of motivation to cut out the cakes!

I've started exercising regularly again (pre-pregnancy I ran - up to half marathon - and did British Military Fitness) so I've been doing some short runs, walking a lot, and I've started buggyfit and the post-natal classes at my local leisure centre. I also just splurged on a running buggy on eBay, even though DD is too wee to use it for a couple of months Blush

I need to shift about 2 stone of baby weight then another 2 stone to be a healthy weight, although the first 2 alone would be great as then I could fit back into all my nice dresses :)

I'm still EBF and I'm hungry all the time, so I've set my daily target at 1800 calories because I don't want to affect my milk supply, but I need to work on the willpower to avoid takeaways and cakes - they're just so tempting!

So inspired by all of your stories, especially all the dedicated exercisers. If you want to add me on MFP my username's the same as here - looking forward to getting in shape with you all!

afishcalledmummy · 15/09/2011 12:31

forever I kind of do that too, though without being so careful and knowledgeable! I have protein at every meal too, and we have cut down on starchy carbs in this house - no pasta, much less bread, wholegrain versions of things if available, sweet potatoes rather than normal ones, so I guess we are "low carbing" in the sense of the usual British diet, though we're actually fuelling appropriately.

Have you tried jelly babies or wine gums instead of carb gels? I find them easier to stomach and also more manageable as they're little so can be taken in smaller doses. Lots of runner friends swear by them!

Hi ariadne - have added you on MFP! Well done on your losses so far!

Off to circuits now - first proper session this week due to DOMS and a foot niggle following the race on Sunday. Wish me luck!
