Low Carbing -can someone explain in simple terms?

AngryFeet · 01/07/2011 21:08

I want to do low Carbing but I am a busy bee and haven't the time to read the Atkins book. I am confused by working out the carbs in stuff and how many I can eat per day. I also don't have loads of time to cook fancy dishes from scratch. Is there a quick simple way to do this diet? Examples of meals would be helpful too :) Thanks!

My stomach is flatter than it has been for years! I am having 2 scrambled eggs for b-fast with berries and yogurt, a huge salad for lunch with feta cheese/ham etc covered in lime juice which is delicious, and a normal dinner minus the potatoes. I am snacking on fruit and nuts in between. Still having sugar in my coffee and the occasional carb such as rice cakes and noodles the other night. Wierd thing is that my breakfast keeps me full till way later than my bowl of museli used to.
Maybe Corriefan you are not eating enough. Also I think that your body gets used to it as last week I felt a bit wierd and dizzy but feel better now.
Am cooking a low carb cake at the moment as it is our anniversary today. It is made with sweeteners and a shed load of eggs, cream cheese and butter!!

Tortington · 14/07/2011 17:51

corriefan - you are eating too much sugar - which means you crave more sugar.

i have a blog www.carbfree.wordpress.com

Too much sugar? What from? I'll look at the blog, thanks. Today I had salad with smoked salmon and Camembert, French dressing, an apple, then tandoori chicken with lentils cooked with onions etc tomatoes and peas, how does that sound?
Also I weighed myself twice this morning and had put on 5 lb in 20 mins, not eaten between??

corriefan · 14/07/2011 22:16

Ok, just read your website, it's the fruit and baked beans that have let me down I think. Is a tiny bit of milk in tea terrible? What about lentils and chickpeas etc? Just picking your brains here!

Tortington · 14/07/2011 23:48

12grams of carbs in half a cup of cooked lentils, they aren't very low carb

splash of milk 3 carbs per brew it all adds up

what carb limit are you giving yourself a day? it sounds like your winging it a bit Grin you have got to use the no sugar formula for the science behind no carbing to work.

if you have sugar in your system - it will be used to fuel your body. if you dont...your body uses its reserves - hence you lose weight.

don't get mixed up with low carb /low calorie/low fat. low carb is a very definate thing - you cant eat fruit - it is packed full of natural sugar and your body will use that for fuel

Tortington · 14/07/2011 23:51

pak choi - ure theres nothing too it - and you get a bit of fibre too - i think its only about 1.5 carbs per normal portion

GetOrfMoiLand · 14/07/2011 23:53

Oh bollocks.

Weighed 11 stone 3 at 8pm. 5lb loss since Monday.

Have just had 3/4 bottle pinot grig, and a big tasty and fries Sad

GetOrfMoiLand · 14/07/2011 23:54

Why? I was doing so well.

Tortington · 16/07/2011 18:07

get back on the wagon - look at it this way....you haven't put on any more weight on top of last weeks weight by eating it!

corriefan · 16/07/2011 20:18

I've fallen off last night and today too, gonna get back on though!

Tortington · 17/07/2011 01:52

I DIDN'T FALL OFF exactly, but have had two days off - back on tomorrow.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 17/07/2011 01:58

Custy, are you still on the low-carb wagon?

I am MIGHTILY impressed.

GetOrf I found SavBlanc easier on the carbs, couple of bottles a week shouldn't put you over limits.

Tortington · 17/07/2011 05:34

YES YEZS OVER TWO YEARS NOW!!

Saracen · 17/07/2011 23:34

"I found Food Doctor savoury roasted soya beans are 1/3 off are Sainsburys at the moment - great crunchy snack only 2g carbs per 25g"

LieIns, have you tried Food Doctor Savoury Seed Blend? 0.6g carbs per 25g! I have them all the time because I do miss crunchy things. They go well on top of a salad or in a ham and cream cheese roll-up.

...hello everyone, I only pop in here from time to time but still doing well on Atkins after ten months' slow and steady weight loss. I have a long way to go still before I reach a healthy weight - about another year if I keep to the current rate of weight loss - but I can do it.

I'm feeling more committed than ever lately, because now when I catch a glimpse of myself in a shop window I no longer think "OMG who is that huge woman? That is not me!" Now I think "She looks OK. A bit overweight, but no big deal." Which is very encouraging. And it's starting to become easier to buy clothes that fit and don't cost a fortune!

Good luck everybody!

GetOrfMoiLand · 17/07/2011 23:38

What a fucking weekend of eating I have just had. DP's birthday last week so loads of eating out with family.

Never mind, for some unfathomable reason I have not put on too much weight - I am 11 5 so still 3 pounds down on last Monday.

I am back on the wagon as of now.

Mogmog · 18/07/2011 11:03

mornning - just marking my place :)

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 18/07/2011 12:37

Yes a very challenging weekend - 2 parties and a stay at my parents' - presented with a plate of bulgar wheat pilaf on arrival, then birthday cake, delicious home made quiches and when I got home dh had brought home some super scrummy rocky road from an event he had been to. Too much for me!
Last ditch four days before I go off camping, drinking wine etc. so trying to stick to really low this week, 20g or less per day.

Tortington · 18/07/2011 22:24

well done everyone ultra committed this week it seems! me too.

like getorf, i fell off wagon a weekend for two days and i still and two pounds down on last weeks weight. so i am not that bothered.

expecting big things tomorrow, mostly becuase i was too busy to eat at dinnertime - not recommended, so low crb count today - i'd say under 15 carbs.

have an evening meeting tomorrow though, with buffet, that i ordered out of my budget - it includes cake i must prepare chicken salad

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 18/07/2011 22:46

Saracen, yeah I saw the seeds but wanted something a bit bigger to crunch on. I have got some Omega mix at home which I usually add to the breadmaking mix!
Have done well today, eggs for breakfast, tuna and ratatouille for lunch, turkey burgers and salad for dinner, then a bit of greek yog with raspberries, a sprinkling of All Bran and xylitol sweetener.
Night all!

Tortington · 19/07/2011 07:27

3lbs this am woo hoo

AngryFeet · 19/07/2011 08:09

I seem to be struggling to get over 10-12g carbs a day Confused. If I eat the amounts of salad/veg they suggest on induction it is no way near 12-15g the suggest you should be eating in carbs from veg. Should I eat more veg?

Very confused....
