Low Carbing -can someone explain in simple terms?

I want to do low Carbing but I am a busy bee and haven't the time to read the Atkins book. I am confused by working out the carbs in stuff and how many I can eat per day. I also don't have loads of time to cook fancy dishes from scratch. Is there a quick simple way to do this diet? Examples of meals would be helpful too :) Thanks!

Have managed to lose another lb over the weekend despite naughtiness as described above. Had a hell of a stomach-ache in the night which kept me awake for three hours though. Wonder if it was just too much meat (finished off the lamb joint in the evening, not much of anything else). I don't usually eat much meat. Am trying a Granovita Peanut Roll which comes in a tin from Holland & Barrettt for today's lunch, with some leftover cauliflower and gravy. About 10g in total.

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/07/2011 10:04

I am going to join this. I am going to do dukan ish attack mode until I lose all this weight.

I usually like to be about 10 stone and I weighed myself last night and I am 11 stone 8. I nearly cried. I look so chubby all over Sad.

Am eating egg white omelette in morning, chicken for lunch and a curry or chilli for dinner (make my own curry and chilli so know exaclty what is going in it).

I want to lose a stone and a half by August. Not going to happen is it Sad

I haven't been this heavy for YEARS.

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 11/07/2011 11:18

Hi GetOrf, you don't need to do away with the egg yolks!

topsi · 11/07/2011 11:20

nice one custardo all good exercise!!
I have done quite well over the week end but do feel a bit light headed and weak?

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/07/2011 13:39

I know lieins but I bought a bottle of egg whites this weekend. I didn't even know they sold such a thing! Is evidently for those lazy bastards for whom cracking an egg in the morning is too much effort (me then) Grin

Actually I can't be doing with Dukan and his frenchy ways. Am doing Atkins so can eat cheese. Always thought there was a shitload of carbs in cheese so am astonished that there is barely any.

Have got a sad little lunchbox with me today filled with turkey breast and cheese - went to Tesco at lunchtime.

I am a bit horrified that there is so much carb in onion - will have to cook chilli curry etc with less onion than usual. That carb counter whatsit linked to upthread is very useful.

one question - is diet coke OK? I know there is no carb in it, howevver does the aspartame affect anything? Would it be better to drink fizzy water?

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 11/07/2011 13:43

Hi GetOrf glad you liked the counter. I didn't realise you could take away fibre from the total before looking at that.
Speaking of which, don't forget to eat some fibre, or you'll be...um...STUCK!

AngryFeet · 11/07/2011 21:15

Oh Fuckity fuck fuck! Got drunk on sat night and ended up drinking wine and eating Chinese. Was then pissed off and hungover yesterday so ate sandwiches. Did the same today. Haven't weighed but guessing have put it all back on :( didn't even enjoy eating the carbs feel bloated and tired.

Totally messed up. If I start induction again now will I be able to do well or have I fucked up?

Tortington · 12/07/2011 18:26

i have onion in almost everything.

tonight i am having 7 carb italian chicken here

Tortington · 12/07/2011 18:28

i lost 2lbs since yesterday!

Riveninside · 12/07/2011 18:28

I thought you needed a decent amount of fat when low carbing?

Tortington · 12/07/2011 23:48

not necessarily, but then we've had this conversation before R haven't we!

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/07/2011 23:59

I must have eaten a lot of fat today - no carbs though.

Lunch: brie, jalapeno cheese, ham

Snack: chicken

Dinner: mattesons sausage and mustard.

Snack - scotch egg (threw sausagey bit away Sad Grin)

800 litres of black coffee.

Also that fibre drink thing - which is 7g of carbs, think that is the only carb i have had all day

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/07/2011 00:01

That spanish chicken looks good custardo, also am going to try clericac mash. I have never cooked celeriac, it looks like Tutankhamuns' brain, and sounds like it would taste like celery. But will give it a try.

Tortington · 13/07/2011 00:12

its a bastard to peel. try the celeriac chips on my blog, they are AWESOME

Tortington · 13/07/2011 07:18

morning, lost another 1lb this am Smile

foreverondiet · 13/07/2011 07:27

R you need calories from somewhere if low carbing. But not necessarily from fat - could be from protein or from unprocessed carbs - I eat low carbs but not no carbs - so my calorie mix varies - sometimes more from protein, sometimes from fat and sometimes from carbs - dairy, starchy veg, fruit and pulses.

Riveninside · 13/07/2011 07:40

Was talking to a doctor who low carbs and she said atkins didnt have enough fat

Tortington · 13/07/2011 07:52

well that doctor would know very well that using the term low carb is a little misleading that it is all about sugar/release of insulin

wiki explains thus 'Insulin is a hormone central to regulating carbohydrate and fat metabolism in the body. Insulin causes cells in the liver, muscle, and fat tissue to take up glucose from the blood, storing it as glycogen in the liver and muscle.
Insulin stops the use of fat as an energy source by inhibiting the release of glucagon. With the exception of the metabolic disorder diabetes mellitus and Metabolic syndrome, insulin is provided within the body in a constant proportion to remove excess glucose from the blood, which otherwise would be toxic. When blood glucose levels fall below a certain level, the body begins to use fat as an energy source through glycogenolysis...'

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin

foreverondiet · 13/07/2011 15:11

re: atkins not having enough fat. It depends on the person. Atkins would have too much fat for some, just right for others, and perhaps not enough for some - other that seems unlikely as its 65%-70% calories from fat!

I would not do atkins as I am not convinced that all that protein and saturated fat is healthy. Fine for weight loss if short term, but I wouldn't want to be eating like that long term.

Riveninside · 13/07/2011 15:59

I think i am now permantnly confused about food Grin

topsi · 13/07/2011 17:44

any one made any thing from flax seed yet? am tempted to try some muffins or pancakes

Tortington · 13/07/2011 17:58

i made flax seed crckers, 2 spoons seed 2 spoons water mix - roll out microwave for 30 secs

simple quick and

FUCKING DISGUSTING Grin

foreverondiet · 13/07/2011 18:46

I am not confused about food, there is no doubt in my mind that the healthiest diet i(long term) is one that contains lots of vegetables, lean protein, wholegrains, pulses, fruit, and some healthy fat. And no processed carbs or transfats.

Short term for quicker weight loss it might be desirable to cut down on carbs or fat.

corriefan · 13/07/2011 19:32

I'm trying this at the moment, I lost 2 stone on it 2 years ago and have put 1 back on since then, but to be fair have been troughing (I cannot be near crisps!)

I didn't weigh myself on monday but I had a salad and a satsuma for lunch and chilli for tea, then tuesday I had a school dinner (ordered a thing withouth potatoes but ended up having a small portion of roast dinner) then salmon, green lentils for tea. Kept getting hungry so ate baked beans and slices of ham and a babybel. Today I had salad again with bacon and strawbs but there were loads of cakes and I ended up having one little one! Got in and had left over chilli mixed with baked beans.

Feel hungry a lot though and tired and a bit dizzy sometimes!

I wore jeans that were too tight today, deliberately, to remind me to keep it up, have now got into pyjamas and very tempted to scoff toast or something!
