well done HMC on loss :)
How is all????

SueSylvesterforPM · 06/05/2011 08:30

thankyou wizzlerr

Ooh didnt know that.

NoWayNoHow · 06/05/2011 08:37

hoops well done on your first WI, that's a great result! And well done hmc too, I can't believe your cumulative loss, that's fantastic! Have a great weekend.

wizzler the feta I used was a 30% less fat version from Tesco (they have to call the low fat version "salad cheese" as it's actually not from Feta, much like champagne from Champagne!), but I was slightly cheeky, tbh - 29g was 1PP and 30g was 2PP, so I had 28g! Grin

Still, points are points are points! Had it as starter last night, with a main of roasted BNS, courgette, and Aubergine and a chicken breast. 8PP for the whole lot and I was stuffed - having the same again tonight methinks!

Good luck for all the WI's today, off to try find some earrings to wear to the wedding next week. Really want something with some colour in it (large red/coral/rink stone) to go with my dress but everything with a stone is gold, and gold jewellery HATES me.

froot · 06/05/2011 09:41

Well done hmc and have a good iow weekend - I lived there in 1988-89. I turned 43 a fortnight ago .......still have 3 boxes chocs hidden away for times of crisis - I just can't bear to part with them !!

vnmum · 06/05/2011 10:46

well done hmc and hoops. Welcome sooper.

Have a good weekend hmc. I am sure all the walking will offset the beer. with regards to your comment to working, do you not eat carbs at all or is it just wholegrain carbs you eat? I ask because i want to make sure that the weight i lose is actually fat and not any muscle ( i know i have to tone my muscle to stop it wasting, but i am working on it Smile)

ClaireDeLoon · 06/05/2011 11:52

Welcome sooper :o

Well done on loss hoops 3.5lbs is a brilliant start!

hmc well done on loss and 49 to date is great, hope you have a lovely weekend and Happy Birthday for Sunday.

NoWay that's a lovely dress.

LittleFriendSusan · 06/05/2011 12:09

Sorry too much for me to catch up on to namecheck all, but well done to all losers :)

HHY I think any running club would laugh at me TBH Grin - I am doing the couch to 5K program with a friend who is equally unfit. I am really enjoying it though, after all these years of thinking I couldn't run (weak joints) it turns out maybe I can... We've been running round the playing field behind her house until now, as no-one can see us(!), but I think we're ready to brave the streets / park now...

I really fancy doing Zumba, but can't find a class with times to suit at the moment. There's one at the community centre near me, but unfortunately it's at 10.30 on a Monday morning, when I am at work. And others locally clash with the kids' activities.

working - I still eat "normal" foods. I have real butter, normal bread (none of your WW crap!) and try to avoid anything with artifical sweeteners in. I do have either skimmed milk or the 1% stuff, but have done for years. The key for me has been to increase my fruit & veg intake and reduce my portion sizes when it comes to carbs. I find if I have something oat-based for breakfast that usually does me until lunchtime. I tend to have veg-based lunch with bread / carb (soup & roll / salad & pitta / couscous & roast veg) & yogurt (Rachel's Organic low-fat). Dinner, I try to have a mainly veggie food or fish during the week. e.g this week we've had lamb tagine & couscous; fish goujons, new potatoes & peas; tuna & rice salad; aubergine & courgette parmigiana; spinach & ricotta cannelloni.

Re. BF, I did the old-style WW whilst BF and used all my extra points and still lost consistently, though I think DS was still feeding more than twice a day? 6 years ago now so can't really remember... I think the important things is to make sure you don't go hungry and make healthy food choices wherever possible... and keep the fluid intake up.

Weekly points - I always use at least half, usually more. If I track accurately I still lose if I eat them all (have lost when used all weeklies & all activity points and STS when hardly touched them...). The only times I have gained, I've gone over my points so was to be expected.

NWNH - congrats on the new job! I love asparagus - have some in the fridge right now, so may well try that over the weekend!

wynken - well done on loss. I am inheriting my friend's allotment in a couple of weeks so hope I will see similar effects from all the digging! Well chuffed as I've been on the waiting list for ages and was expecting to have to wait another year at least, but she was going to give hers up, so I got in there quick!

hmc well done for 2.5lb loss. Enjoy your birthday weekend :)

Sorry - this turned into a mammoth post... Am more than ready for my lunch today... went to the pub for friend's birthday last night and had far too much wine, always makes me hungry the next day! I've made a bean & feta salad so trying to make up for last night's overindulgence!

LittleFriendSusan · 06/05/2011 12:25

And just to echo what hmc said about wholegrains - I also avoid white processed carbs wherever possible, so brown rice, wholewheat spaghetti, wholemeal or rye bread, etc. I've always had wholegrain cereals anyway. Not too keen on wholewheat penne etc so tend to do half and half, but the spaghetti is fine. The only time I have white bread is for a bacon butty as only a soft white roll will do!!

CareyFakes · 06/05/2011 14:15

Echo echo echo on the Wholegrain, try and substitute it in most meals, pastas always wholewheat, keeps me fuller

mistlethrush · 06/05/2011 14:21

LFS - that all ties in with the GI too - wholegrain foods are lower in GI for the equivalent amount compared to white versions. I love asparagus - I can eat it just on its own - same with sprouting brocoli - although garlic mayo done 1/2 and 1/2 with low fat mayo and low fat yog also makes a great dip for that sort of thing. At least its getting to be cheaper to buy enough veg to have a plate load in the evening - not so good in the winter.

HMC - that's a fantastic loss - how long has it taken?

ClaireDeLoon · 06/05/2011 15:19

I also eat wholegrain/granary etc where there is an alternative. Dietician thought it was important for DP's blood sugar levels (he's diabetic) as the slow release of carbs (which eventually become sugar after all) means a more stable blood sugar level for him, so we made the switch late last year. You can even get wholewheat pitta breads, tortilla wraps etc.

Also eating potatoes in their skins lower GI than say mashed (again longer to digest) if I understand what she said correctly, so we normally have new pots in their skins which is fine this time of year but was a bit pricey over the winter.

mistlethrush · 06/05/2011 15:57

I've got a GI book and will look up to see if there's any difference between a baked (old) potato eaten wtih its jacket compared with new potatoes and let you know CdL - might find as long as you avoid the mashed (which you, of course, put butter and or milk and or cream into) you don't have to go for new potatoes. Although they are really good baked.

ClaireDeLoon · 06/05/2011 16:03

DP not a fan of baked pots that's why we stick to new. I'll have a baked potato if I'm home on my own. We'd sometimes have just plain boiled old potatoes rather than mashed, sometimes mash with no milk/butter/cream. Both of those are fine if there is a sauce but I've always preferred new potatoes tbh.

It would be interesting to know though of your book agrees with the dietician - she said even peeled old potatoes steamed and then eaten whole will take longer to digest than mashed therefore slowing down the sugar release, so assume if that is true that would alter the GL?

HeyH0 · 06/05/2011 16:04

I'll namecheck properly later, but while we're on the subject of carbs...

I'm following a loosely low-GL approach (I say loosely because I do allow myself a couple of higher GL meals each week, usually when I eat out.)

Even though I eat wholegrain versions of everything, I seem to have better losses when I limit stuff like pasta, bread, pitta, wraps etc to no more than one portion a day and up my protein consumption; I've found I can be more relaxed with true whole grains (e.g. quinoa, pot barley).

HighHeidYin · 06/05/2011 16:39

noway well done on loss and new job - things are all going in the right direction!

wynken huge wow! AMAZING loss - what an inspiration!

Welcome sooper and another well done to hmc and hoops and any other losers that I have missed - you lot talk so much it's hard to keep up! So impressed with all the weight lost on here!

Well have changed my membership from esource to online so won't be attending classes any more. It's saving me a bit of money though which I need to do as will be spending £39 on gym membership every month (gulp). Better make use of it! Also cancelled my jazz class as it is pointless attending classes outwith the gym I am joining and paying extra. Really quite gutted about it though as did enjoy it and got to know everyone there really well...

Ah well, it's all for the best I'm sure.

WI at 11.3 1/2 this morning, so have lost 1/2lb which is better than nothing. Have lost 15lbs since starting. Back to tracking and feeling more in control. And danced frantically around the house like a loony with my mp3 on full blast for an hour and got really hot and sweaty (tmi) so hopefully that's burned a few pounds!

HighHeidYin · 06/05/2011 16:43

Oh before I forget, there's a class at the gym I would love to go to but d'you think it would be all young thangs at it and I would stick out like a geriatric and be laughed out of the room at the riped old age of 41?

This is the description:

BODYJAM is the cardio workout where you are free to enjoy the sensation of dance. An addictive fusion of the latest dance moves and hottest new sounds puts the emphasis as much on having fun as breaking a sweat. Funky instructors teach you to move with attitude through this 55 minute class. So grab a friend, get front and centre and get high on the feeling of dance.

What do you think? Am I fooling myself to think that I wouldn't look like a middle aged idiot? Honest answers on a postcard please!

CareyFakes · 06/05/2011 16:50

Go for it HighHeidYin I can't dance to save my life, but it sounds a right laugh!

HighHeidYin · 06/05/2011 16:53

D'you think carey? Right, what I might do then is drag my sister along, and we will hide round the corner before it starts and see if it is all skinny teens attending. Is there is anyone else remotely well built and over the age of 30 we will give it a go Grin

HeyH0 · 06/05/2011 17:15

HHY Have a go. I've never been to a BodyJam class, but one of my friends goes regularly & there are several pensioners in her class, so I'm sure you'd be more than able to keep up.

CDL Has the dietician ever explained how to safely incorporate higher GI foods into DP's diet and made the distinction between GI and GL?

HighHeidYin · 06/05/2011 17:18

Oh that's great to know HeyH0. Is on tonight but sis can't go. Wonder if I should brave it on my own...

wizzler · 06/05/2011 17:44

Heyho.. give it a bash and report back! One of the girls I work with was persuaded to do a salsa class, and reluctantly agreed. When she got there, it was for the over 70s ..Grin. she is 26!

ClaireDeLoon · 06/05/2011 18:21

Yes she did HeyHo. Plus there is a lot you can read out there about it. So for example he had choc for the first time in months last week and ate it after a low GL meal and his blood sugar levels were fine when he tested. He's learnt a lot, lost two stone without counting calories just by following what doctor and dietician have advised and his blood sugar levels are stable so I'm very proud of him :o

We still have white carbs sometimes like you, and like you it's normally eating out so Pizza Express etc. Last weekend I made burgers and we had them with ordinary burger buns for example. I think when it HAS to be a lifelong lifestyle change you do have to build in such things.

ShouldersBackAndNoBiscuits · 06/05/2011 21:44

Just had a fantastic dinner, based on a recipe from the WW magazine. Venison en croute - 9 PP. was delicious and felt very decadent.

6 sheets filo pastry, venison leg steak (about 125g) tbsp philadelphia extra light.
layer pastry, (spray with frylight between layers of pastry divide into 2 rectangles) sauteed mushrooms in fry light and put on pastry rectangles with the phialdelphia. wrap pastry round to make parcels bake in oven for 20 mins at 200 C. eat. nom nom nom.

well done today's losers!

finding the discussion on lifelong lifestyle change v interesting. I agree that it's about changing the choices you make to make yourself happy in the long term, not just the bit where you are trying to lose weight.

androbbob · 06/05/2011 22:12

HHY - have done body jam class and it is fast and furious! Very good music but not your typical dance music on the radio. Is very choreographed and some moves are hard to follow but boy you do sweat! Depends on your gym but ours is full of middle aged tubby women like me trying to shake our booties!

LolaLadybird · 06/05/2011 22:15

Well done to all losers and welcome to Sooper.

NoWay - congrats on the job, v exciting. Also like the sound of the asparagus/feta recipe, I have both in the fridge. Think it may feature in my weekend ...

LFSusan - enjoy the allotment. We took ours on in Feb. Spent a couple of weekends building raised beds and generally getting organised before planting and it's now all go with things sprouting up all over the place -v v exciting. Had our first crop of produce in the week - baby leaf spinach which needed thinning out - and was inordinately pleased with myself!

Think this week may be a slow weight-loss week. Had a sneaky peek on the scales today and only half a pound off since WI on Tuesday even though have been v good. I think after the 3.5 lbs last week, my body might be hanging onto its ample fat reserves!
