2 stone to lose - GL and couch - 5km

mamasunshine · 18/03/2011 09:51

Ok so I'm now desperate to lose 2 stone. Starting to feel motivated so have bought Holford's GL diet book (just started reading). Makes a lot of sense. I'm also going to start running with the couch - 5km on Bupa website. Going to start getting into motivated mode over the weekend...with 1st run Saturday morning! Buying a set of scales this afternoon, but think I'm about 11 stone at 5ft4. Going to do this slowly though, so only looking at 1lb a week weightloss, an extra 1lb here and there would be an excellent bonus Grin

Would anyone care to join me for motivation/to keep me on the straight and narrow?! Also to share any tasty recipes/food/snack ideas etc!

Will weigh-in on a Saturday Smile

ZZMum · 18/03/2011 10:25

hey - you could be me!!

I have 2 stone to lose and am on the 5K route - starting with a PT tomorrow and want to go low GI so kids do not see me on a diet..

I will weigh tomorrow and start - have you booked a 5K race to focus the training - mine is in June so I want to drop a stone by then

Good luck - and to me!

mamasunshine · 18/03/2011 14:08

Hello zzmum how exciting that I have someone to do this with Grin

Is PT personal trainer? You'll have to let me know how that goes. I was thinking about seeing one for an hour a month, just to show me some exercises for specific areas etc.

Thinking of doing a 5Km race June/July but haven't booked it yet, think I will next week [scared!] How is the running going for you? Have to get my trainers and stopwatch dusted off now Grin

Are you going to give yourself any 'treats' for certain targets?

OP posts:
ZZMum · 18/03/2011 14:57

Hi!!

yes it is a personal trainer - am going to do one weight session / toning work with her each week as I am going to focus on running the 5K with the training programme - I used the C25K one which is fab until I lost my way and so now am back at week 3 but its going OK!!

So going to do race for life in June .. I do have a couple of plans for treats - day after race, I have booked a personal shopper as I will (hopefully!!) be in need of some new clothes...

On the way, not worked out treats yet - am hoping the joy of being slimmer will be treat enough...

deedee321 · 18/03/2011 17:38

Oooh MamaSunshine just googled that couch-5km thing after reading your post on our post-natal thread and love the idea! I'll join you girls! Don't want to cut back on any food (hee hee!) and just want to get back to pre-preg weight which is 3/4 stone lighter than I am now. My prob will be getting a schedule as my DH works shifts - but hey, 20 mins is not too much to ask and really like the build-up schedule. Going to search for a 5k race now, woo hoo!

carlywurly · 18/03/2011 19:19

deedee, look up the Race for Life - there's bound to be one near you - I run ours every year and it's a great atmosphere. They're usually 5 and 10k.

deedee321 · 18/03/2011 19:36

Thanks Carly, found local one in 8 weeks, perfect :)

Jobi1 · 19/03/2011 11:37

Found you!!

I am hoping to do the Race for Life at the beginning of June, so think thats about 10 weeks. I have just made friends with a neighbour who is going to be my running buddy. She is tiny, so that's motivation for me!! I am a bit worried I'm going to be embarrassed, I haven't done much running for a long time so am going to be rubbish! Blush

I ultimately want to lose 4 - 5 stone Sad I'd be proper skinny then! Not sure how doable that is, but I'm 36 and not having any more children, so I want to hit 40 looking and feeling fabulous, rather than fat and old!

I put on a lot of weight with DS1 and only lost about half of it, plus I'd put a bit on before that from being loved up with new hubby! So not a great start. This pregnancy I put on about 2 stone or so and have lost about 1.5 of that, so not doing too badly. Have stopped losing though, so need to get back to being good foodwise and doing some serious exercise.

So my goal this year is to lose about 2.5 stone hopefully. It would be good to lose a stone by the time of the run. I feel way too fat to run at all really, so hope I can overcome that and I'm not right haha!

So are we going to do a weekly report or something?

ZZMum · 19/03/2011 16:19

OK so I have been to see PT who was great but gave me the slightly depressing news that I am 40% fat - so that is really FAT! I think it will equate to a 2 stone weight loss to get it to normal ranges.. quite weird to think that I have about 5 stone of fat on me - actually not that weird if you ever saw my ass!

Shee has also changed the way I run and reckons I need to run at faster speeds as I am quite tall and so running slower means shorter strides which are not as effective - she put my running speed up 30% which I thought would kill me .. but I think it was OK but I am going to go back to week 2 of the C25K programme and do it at new speed - this means I am now should be on target for a 30 min race rather than my previous 3 days!!

At gym tomorrow and also tomorrow start new eating plan - less carbs and no wine... want to stop drinking to stop need to eat crap the next day..

So this is me - 5'8" 12 stone 1lb.. 40% fat!!

mamasunshine · 20/03/2011 10:55

Hello Smile didn't have time to put stats on yesterday, also decided against buying scales, so now I have to walk into town each Sat am to use the scales at Boots, but they also measure body fat.

Apparently I'm only 5ft3 Sad,,,I've always been a little optimistic about my height Grin 11stone exactly, so in the overweight range of BMI. And my body fat is 37.7%, which is poor. Those stats were all the motivation I needed!

zzmum - loving the personal shopper treat! And the PT sounds great too! I've given myself my first target - 6 weeks to get down to 10st 2lb, that would be a 2lb a week weightloss (feeling a bit more optimistic for initial weightloss). If I manage to hit my target I can treat myself to a new handbag.

That's great deedee Smile It really is an easy way to get into running, and you have much more energy afterwards. I'm not reducing food intake as such, just trying to eat more healthily and get rid of all the chocolate and cake I've been getting my energy from!

jobi it's quite easy going at first, and if you struggle with any sessions you can redo them before moving forward. And I'm totally rubbish at running, haven't done it in ages but did start C25K just as I fell pg, then the sickness started! I've put my weight on in exactly the same way as you! I was 3 stone lighter when I met dh!

Went out for 1st run this morning and feel great now, going to do run 2 tomorrow whilst the toddlers are at nursery. Had 1 piece of wholemeal toast with 2 boiled eggs for breakfast, and 2 oatcakes with cottage cheese for a snack (can't wait for lunch Hmm)!

So this week I'm going to concentrate mainly on the running, increasing walking and drinking 2 litres of water/herbal tea a day, as well as starting to tweek diet.

Shall we do this? Adding losses each Saturday with new weights?

OP posts:
Jobi1 · 20/03/2011 12:01

Easy? haha I really hope so, been about 4-5 years since I did proper running, and I'm scared!! Start tomorrow night...

I'm too ashamed to post my start weight Sad Blush

Will do my weekly progress though Smile Is that ok? Bearing in mind I'm 5'6" and got about 2-4 stone to lose!!

deedee321 · 20/03/2011 21:44

Sounds great MamaSunshine, will keep us all motivated. Don't be embarrassed about your weight Jobi, you've just had a baby! I think we're starting this exercise programme at just the right time lapse after birth.
I'm 5' 7'' and usually somewhere between 10 and 10 and a quarter stone. At the mo I am 11 stone 1 and as I had a C section I've been doing all the cake-eating I feel I deserve as a new mummy (and shamefully plan to continue Wink) but been much slower to dash about. Have got my energy back though and this thread will be fab for keeping us to it!

Jobi1 · 21/03/2011 10:39

You would be if you were me, its no excuse for my numbers!! Only got myself to blame.

Anyway, here goes: -

WEEK 1 WEIGHT LOSS:

Its my first running session tonight and I feel knackered already but hopefully will have enough energy and it won't go too badly. I will report back.

As for eating, we are pretty healthy but eat too much and a few too many treats. I have been trying to cut things out over the last few weeks and need to do a bit better really. Still the odd treat but less of everything and stop the really bad things.

I am fed up with myself and ashamed of my weight and figure so no more excuses.

Oh and I signed up for Race for Life yesterday so no going back now! Its just under 11 weeks, so have officially kicked myself up the bum!

mamasunshine · 21/03/2011 11:17

jobi1 - I feel pretty much the same, although I've worked myself into the mindframe that I don't care what people think looking at me running as I'll be thin 1 day!!! But mainly I want to be fit and healthy for my dc's and give them a good influence on eating a good balanced diet and regular exercise etc Smile. Well done on signing up for race for life Smile I've found the running has given me more energy, great for de-stressing and makes me feel really good about myself for the day! As for portions, I find a smaller dinner plate helps. Then have 1/2 full of veggies, 1/4 protein and 1/4 carbs such as brown rice/1 slice of wholemeal bread etc. That's supposed to be the 'balanced' way to eat. Good luck with the run Smile !

deedee yes think this is best time to start exercise too, it gives you more energy to get through these exhausting days! I popped on this morning not feeling like going out for a run, saw your post with the word 'motivated' and it did exactly that Smile I just got ready with baby and dog and did my 2nd run Grin I would've felt crap if I hadn't done it so thanks for the motivation Smile!!

Did really well yesterday, although had quite bad sugar withdrawals, and then had a small (for me!) slice of lemon tarte after all dc's in bed. Don't feel guilty though as I'd improved overall so much and I can't expect miracles overnight hey!

Losing this weight is more about me losing my 'bad' eating habbits I've picked up through pregnancies and breastfeeding. And gaining the good habit of regular exercise. Hope everyone's feeling good today

OP posts:
ZZMum · 22/03/2011 08:08

hey sounds like you are doing well - I did not have a good start - ate badly at lunch as I did not plan properly - I think I need to make more effort to ensure I always have good food in so I am not reduced to eating crap ...

Going to do a run tonight at gym - quite looking forward to it as I do love the high I get from it and it helps keep on straight and narrow - also going to keep food diary for a couple of weeks to make sure there is no mindless eating.. or if there is, it is all tracked!

Here's hoping for a good day!

deedee321 · 22/03/2011 08:44

Am on mini-break at nice hotel at moment (our first holiday as a family of 4, is lovely!) so am def not cutting back on the food! But am going to do my first run today, have brought my sports stuff. Will report back.
Sounds like you're doing really well MamaSunshine, do you run with dog and baby?? If so, am massively impressed. I like the thought of a baby jogger but until dd (age 3) starts nursery there's no point! Am so glad you were remotivated by our thread!
Jobi1 don't be so hard on yourself, you are doing something about it so that's all positive. And you're better eating too much of healthy-ish food than snacking on unhealthy stuff.
ZZ, know what you mean about just having to eat what's to hand, def need to supermarket-shop with a plan in mind!
Nothing to do with our fitness, but have to share that I took my baby swimming yesterday and he looked so cute in his mini wetsuit!!

Jobi1 · 22/03/2011 09:04

Well the first training session was fab, I'm made up with the Couch to 5k programme, its great. Having a running buddy is fab too, really motivating. We have a fanastic long flat straight prom not far from here, so it went really well Smile

I had a look into the diet and exercise thing and reminded myself that exercise alone isn't going to cut it for weight loss, so think I might have a few weeks of mixing batch cooking with low fat ready meals to give me a kick start. Will make life a bit easier in terms of tracking what I eat. I also have an online calorie counter thing but need to get back into using it.

ZZ I shop once a week (online at the mo) and do a list beforehand. I plan all our meals for 7 days and also by stuff for lunch etc too. Works really well for us.(Does that make me really sad?!)

mamasunshine do you run with baby and what kind of buggy do you have? I think I will stick to our evening programme for now though.

deedee enjoy your mini break!! I'd love a mini break right now, on my own!! 3 year old is full of cold and off preschool and I am climbing the walls!

ZZMum · 23/03/2011 10:41

Just done my first c25K training session at the new speed as recommended by trainer and it was sooooooooooooooo hard - there is such a difference between run at 8.5K and 10.2K !!!

Food was a lot better yesterday and I do think I need to plan plan plan so Jobi, I agree with your idea - I used to have food delivered weekly - need to get back into that routine and also sort out some good meals to have during day as I tend to snack rather than have 1 meal .. hence 2 stone overweight!!

I am also keeping a food and exercise diary now for the next 11 weeks which is when the run is - I really want to have lost a stone over that time which is hardly more than 1lb per week so should be acheivable .. but let me read this back in June and see what I say!

mamasunshine · 23/03/2011 13:05

zzmum - food diary is a great thing, really gets you to see what you are really eating. I also have a weekly online shop with evening meal planner, but I really need to focus on having healthy lunches and snacks planned too. Have also struggled with the lunch part this week with not having certain things in.

deedee - hope your break away is lovely Smile Yes I run with the baby and dog! I have a phil and teds for the toddlers, so I've been running on a Mon and Weds whilst they're at nursery and taking baby in that. Dog is extremely well trained and stays near me running off lead so easy enough!

jobi1 - I'm so pleased you enjoyed your run Grin I knew you would! I unfortunately can't motivate myself to do more than watch tv and breastfeeding once ds1 and 2 are in bed, so no evening running here!

Have had a goodish couple of days, not brilliant with food, but have been increasing water intake and decreasing the junk. Walked about 6 miles yeseterday, carrying baby in sling and pushing double buggy with ds's in! What a workout-I was aching last night ! So giving myself the dayy off exercise today

OP posts:
deedee321 · 23/03/2011 20:31

Wow MamaSunshine, that sounds a total workout!! 6 miles with 3 children being pushed/carried - way to go!! That sounds a lovely way to run with baby and dog...and running while pushing will get weight off faster. You must be really fit already with all that walking with children. Sounds a really healthy lifestyle.

Jobi and ZZ, sounds like it's going really well for both of you! Well done on a great start. I live near a prom too Jobi, so think will do my runs along there. Did my first one yesterday around the hotel grounds - I enjoyed the first half but by the end was definitely ready to stop! I did 90 seconds run, 60 seconds walk as got mixed up, then realised should have been other way round! Have mastitis and had to actually hold up boob while I ran so I must have looked really cool!!!

Home now so will have to work out proper training routine. DH works shifts so will just grab chances when he's home, will work out my running slots at the start of each week. My race is on 15th May which is slightly sooner than I'd choose but is local and in a nice park so on an 8-week countdown!

Keep running girls :) :)

ZZMum · 24/03/2011 21:49

Just back from running again - had to go back to week II on the programme to cope with the new speed - not sure I am built for speed!

Food was better again today but am away for a family weekend with extended family so need to keep an eye on the snacking .. hope to catch up with you all next week with weigh in results!

deedee321 · 26/03/2011 21:59

Did my second run and reasonably enjoyed it! But have been shameful piggy foodwise, my life seems to be one big cake at the moment!! Need to sort myself out, thinking will not weigh myself this Sat as the news cannot possibly be good, will behave better next week and start weighing then...will probably be back at last week's weight by then!!
