Half a stone challenge

enjoysthesunshine · 22/09/2010 10:39

My favourite jeans fit a person half a stone lighter than me.

Anyone fancy joining me to shake off a few pounds? I am planning to cut back on treats (but god-forbid, not cut them out!) and move a little more.

I'm starting now! Smile

enjoysthesunshine · 22/09/2010 10:43

Oh, I forgot to say - I am currently 10 stone 1. (It helps if I write it down - then I can't ignore it). Wink

I've lost a stone of baby weight but have this last bit to go. Final push so to speak.

enjoysthesunshine · 23/09/2010 09:56

Oh well, it is just me.

So much for starting yesterday - starting is so difficult. I love puff pastry and mini magnums, and both tempted me yesterday.

Perhaps I'll try to get some sleep - tiredness is actually my downfall.

May I join sunshine?

Need to loose about that much. Current weight is 8st 9 lbs would like to be 8st.(In my defense I am 5 foot nothing so every bit of extra weight shows)

Would love to get some nice winter clothes but don't want to buy a bigger size. I am cutting sugar and sweets, few carbs, lots of fruit and veg.

An hour exercise everyday, I normally weigh in on mondays.

Hope you are doing well. Have you lost any weight?

Good luck

DontMentionChorizo · 23/09/2010 10:18

I Know how hard it is to start.

I find that once you have kicked sugar it gets easier and easier.

I went through a phase when I just could not say no to sweet stuff, and found it really hard to stop.

My DP has a terrible sweet tooth but he's a keen surfer and burns everything really quick. He's also a professional sports coach so exercise is part of his daily life.

Are you keeping a food journal. I find this really helps!

nameymcnamechange · 23/09/2010 10:25

I'll join in.

I've got considerably more than half a stone to lose but have decided that to think of the whole amount is daunting, so am going to break it down in to four or five half stone mini targets.

And I know if I lose the first half stone there will be certain pairs of jeans in my wardrobe that will fit me again Grin.

My problem foods are wine and bread, plus I eat too late at night.

mrshiccup · 23/09/2010 12:14

Think a mini magnum now & again is not too bad, at least its not a standard size one Wink
Hi, i also have about half stone to lose, was getting too close to 11 stone for my liking and would prefer to be nearer 10 (5ft6). Lost about 4pounds in last few weeks by mostly not eating too excessively! Realised that i tend to measure out meal portions to myself and DP equally and need to stop doing so (unless i want to end up about 13 stone Shock )
Cutting down a bit on bread so have started making 'open' sandwiches, ie one slice instead of two.
Something else i found useful, i do have sweet/choc craving tooth so have bought some v tasty chocs (lindor? sp?) and am happy to have just one after my lunch (little bit of luxury)

becstarlitsea · 23/09/2010 12:31

I'd like to join too please - although I've got (sobs) a whole stone to lose. I'm 10st 10 (sobs again) and want to get back to 9st 10.

My problems are -

  • eating chocolate when I'm tired or anxious
  • eating when I'm procrastinating (I work from home... the fridge is too close to my desk)

Basically just eating between meals when I'm not even hungry - that old chestnut! I get a fair amount of exercise walking DS to and from school, walking to and from shops etc. So my resolutions are...

To give myself smaller portions at mealtimes
To resist the corner shop chocolate fix and leave crisps out of the supermarket shop
To keep a food journal

And I've just ordered a GI diet book as I think part of the reason I reach for chocolate is that I tend to get hypoglycaemic, but of course I make it worse by eating way too much sugar.

What date are we aiming to get to this half stone target then? 7 weeks from today would be 11th November and 1lb per week is supposed to be a healthy rate... Shall we shoot for that?

DontMentionChorizo · 23/09/2010 13:21

Hi

Although I am not the OP, just wanted to say welcome everyone: namey, hiccup and Bec.

The more the merrier regardless of how much everyone needs to lose.

Like the 11 November date.

I too find that a food journal helps.

Also planning in advance and getting your shopping done so you know exactly what you'll be eating.

With regards to sweets, I reckon it's best not to keep stuff at home..

Good luck everyone.

My stats:

1.54m
54 Kg

Hope to be 50 Kgs by 11 November!!!!

encyclogirl · 23/09/2010 13:23

I'll join.

I need to lose 9lbs, to get to 9'5" but half a stone would be fab!

I post on the nothing tastes as good as being slim feels thread and it's really good.

If I have half a stone off by 11 November, I'll be delighted :)

DontMentionChorizo · 24/09/2010 14:17

Hi Encyclogirl.

Been lurking in that thread, you seem like a nice lot.

this thread on the other hand has gone very quiet

Where are you half-stoners???

I will keep posting and hopefully you'll come back:

Today I have had

B: Coffee with skimmed milk and sweetener, 1 bowl of porridge made with 50/50 water and skimmed milk with a drizzle of honey.

Snack: 1 banana, handful of almonds

Exercise: 1 hour running up and down stairs, weights and abs.

Lunch: 1 omelette, 2 mushrooms. Chickpea salad w. feta. 1 nectarine. Water

becstarlitsea · 24/09/2010 14:30

I've been quiet because haven't done so well today (already!). But will 'fess up in the hope that it concentrates my mind...

B: Low fat yoghurt, stewed apple, sultanas
L: Tuna, bean and potato salad with olive oil
and here's where it goes pear-shaped... Far too much goat's cheese and crackers for dessert. Cheese is so often my downfall!

The plan for dinner is cauliflower, potatoes, spring greens and lean lamb steaks.

Exercise - 1 and a half hours walking with a backpack.

Will be away over the weekend - see you all on Monday!

arfasleep · 24/09/2010 16:59

Well, we're on curry tonite, home-made so can control what goes in, have taken 1 nan out of freezer and hoping we'll manage on sharing that with me having smaller half, trying to stop myself eating crusts off ds toast wi choc spread Blush ps name changed from mrshiccup (decided didn't like it, ds watching gigglebiz so went for 'arfasleep'!)

nameymcnamechange · 24/09/2010 21:35

Oh hello hello.

Sorry, its all gone a bit titsup here in the namey household Sad.

Today I have had a small granary bread roll with some cheese spread. Two cups of tea w milk, one coffee with milk and sugar.

One glass of white wine. One huge brandy.

My dh has come home from work saying he feels very sick and thinks he ate a dodgy coronation chicken sandwich at lunchtime. He is currently lying on the sofa trying not to vomit.

I am emetophobic (phobia of vomiting) so now can't eat and only want to drink brandy to numb the fear.

Will post more when I feel more sane Sad Sad Sad.

DontMentionChorizo · 25/09/2010 09:41

Hello ladies:

Arf: Like your name, home made curry sounds lovely!!
Bec: I know, cheese is soooo tempting. Well done on the exercise front.
Namey: Sorry to hear you are not well. Hope your DH is feeling better

I had to be away yesterday and ended up eating some greasy, crappy tapas (I am in Spain, btw). Food options here, very limited and everything is fried (Yuck!), thanks god it was only a tiny portion. On the positive side , DP and I bought cheap bikes from Carrefour.

Today I have been for a 7 Km run/power walk. Had a coffee with sweetener and will probably have porridge w, water for breakfast and a home made chicken and veg casserole for lunch (I prefer to have my main mail at lunchtime).

That's all form me, chin up and positive vibes to everyone. Let's keep this thread alive.

Chorizo

DontMentionChorizo · 25/09/2010 09:42

Ahem... that should read main MEAl, not mail.

arfasleep · 25/09/2010 13:54

You're in spain? Get urself some lovely grilled fish, yuuuummmmmy!! Or mixed salad (if remember right has tuna & egg in too, altho that might be in Greece), Paella? not sure if ok diet wise, but rice/meat/fish, should be ok, just go easy on bread basket & chorizo Wink obviously

DontMentionChorizo · 25/09/2010 14:46

LOL Arf!
Yup I am in Spain

Grocery shopping today. I am terrified of the fish counter but that's exactly what I am getting today. Loads of fish, chicken, fruit, pulses and salad stuff.

They do have good produce in the supermarket, it's going out that's a nightmare everything deep fried or swimming in mayonnaise.

Not too keen on Chorizo myself, as it happens Wink

Good luck on the weight loss and keep coming back to the thread at the moment is just me and tumbleweed.

Xx

eisbaer · 25/09/2010 23:39

hi i'd like to join, please! Am currently 9 stone five and want to maintain 9 stone. Totally feeling OP'S comment about jeans fitting someone else-don't think i've been too naughty last few wks but still not losing loads of weight. Worried that age now making its mark, i'll turn 35 in dec. Any comments or extra tips? I feel quite downhearted about the whole thing just now, have very small chest and fed up looking in mirror to see tum being biggest bit of me. And feeling quite obsessed which is quite out of character. Well done to everyone here x

arfasleep · 26/09/2010 08:38

My tips would def be to cut down on carbs (bread/pasta mainly). I automatically go for high carb choices, pizza, panini as don't eat much meat but find reducing carbs quite painless and end up less 'hungry' than on say 'low fat' diet. For lunch i try to have baked potato only eating about half of actual potato, salads with maybe 1 piece of bread or small roll. Seems to be working, slowly but surely!

DontMentionChorizo · 26/09/2010 12:05

Hi Eis and welcome!

Hi Arf!

Agree with Afe re: carbs. Unless you are super active eating too much carbs, specially refined ones is not great. I loooove a bowl of pasta but it's sooo easy to eat great big portions of it. So at the moment I am trying to eat lean meats and lot of veggies.

Today I have had my usual coffee and porridge made with half water half skimmed milk.

Been for a 40 min bike ride.

I find it helps to keep a food journal and to plan your meals. I will be having a whole grain pitta with salad and hommous, a pear and some almonds for lunch.

Grilled salmon with runner beans, broccoli, and white bean salad for dinner.

Keep posting and keep losing.. Will weigh in tomorrow.

BlackandGold · 26/09/2010 19:09

Hope I can join in. Need to lose at least half a stone but am going away 3 Nov so would like to do it before then!

So far today have had bran flakes with sliced banana followed by a pear for brekkie.

Lunch was cod loin, mushy peas and freshly made low fat chips, done with frylight.

Am now sitting here wondering what to eat next!

Have some fresh pineapple in the fridge so might go for that

enjoysthesunshine · 26/09/2010 20:29

Wow! Hello everyone!! Welcome! welcome!

I haven't been near the computer for a few days, running around after kids.

I have been doing okay eating wise though and have been doing more walking than usual because one of my dc's has started nursery and I am walking there and back twice a day too - that's about an extra half hour.

I've also been cross with my husband all weekend and have felt too sour for sweets Angry - maybe I should keep that up?! Nothing major, he's just a grumpy twat at the moment. probably makes two of us now... Wink

By the way, 11 Nov sounds great!

OP posts:
eisbaer · 26/09/2010 20:30

Hi,
Not a bad day, really, but mucho room for improvement still! Got a long lie today so didn't need any breakfast, had two cups of tea, then from 2 p.m. onwards sandwiches, a pie, a marshmallow top hat, a slice of birthday cake, followed by more grazing on sandwiches at DS's 2nd party. This reads like The Very Hungry Caterpillar! Believe me, I did alot better than at any other birthday party I've held!
My problem is finding snacks when I'm genuinely hungry. If there's healthy option it's not a problem, but if there's nothing healthy to hand then I just go for anything I can find. So being prepared with healthy snacks will help me massively.
Also, I do find it helps if I can go to bed not entirely starving but not full up either. makes me less hungry the next day somehow and helps the weight loss.
I run 6 miles 3 times a week though, so you can understand my frustration when I can't seem to shift any weight.

Think will start the food plan tomorrow. Also, get incredibly grumpy when hungry and I hate getting cranky with my kids just because I've suddenly decided to rein it in. But I think the key is healthy snacks to hand. There are only so many carrots I ever want to eat in one sitting, unlike crisps or sweets.
Dare I suggest it's more frustrating for people on this thread because the last stone or so is always the hardest to lose? OR should I just STFU now?!

eisbaer · 26/09/2010 20:36

p.s. I'm up for 3rd Nov as D-Day if everyone else is? My Target Weight would be 125 lbs(that's utopian, but might aswell aim for the stars). Good luck to everyone.
p.p.s. comedy moment, my DH just came over and said "what you mumsnetting about?" and I went all shifty like and eventually blurted out the thread. His response? "you don't need to lose weight. I'll get you new jeans." Made me laugh anyway, although totally missing hte point. Wouldn't you love a pragmatic, guilt-free male existence sometimes?!
p.p.s. anyone else cut out booze? I think it has to go because it's quite fattening in itself and also weakens my resolve. that's enough from me now!

BlackandGold · 26/09/2010 20:45

Think I'm going to take some salmon out of the freezer to have for dinner tomorrow

Will cook it in the oven covered in some sweet chilli sauce then do roasted butter nut squash, peppers and whatever other veg I buy to go with it.

Will be at work all day so will plan to have a plain jacket potato for lunch and an apple mid morning.

Best laid plans though.........
