So what am I doing wrong?

In the last 2-3 years I have put on 2-3 stone almost without realising it. I have been exercising on and off for about 4 months and trying to eat better. I haven't lost a thing. My weight is up and down and I am just so fed with it all.

I am back. Have bought chicken, pork and lots of fish which I love. I gave up alcohol ages ago so that isn't a problem. I did nip into Smiths to get a book on no carbs eating but there wasn't any. I know nothing about food groups and feed my kids better than I feed myself. I am going to miss fruit and sushi. I assume I can't have sushi as it has rice in it?

Before I had baby number three I could eat what I wanted and my weight only ever fluctuated by half a stone. I used to have cereal and toast for breakfast, jacket spud and cheese for lunch and then a main meal at night. Since dc3 breakfast is hit and miss unless DH makes me scrambled eggs, lunch is sushi or a salad of some sort with mainly leaves and then dinner with dh about 7ish.

I am on meds which list a side effect of weight gain but I have been exercising yet somehow I weight what I did just before I gave birth to dc1. My breasts must weigh a ton as they are now a G cup but most of the weight is all around my middle.

Ive lost 9lb in 3 weeks by using paul McKenna - nothing is banned, its just about listening to body signals & curbing emotional eating & snacking. Works best for me, after trying WW/SW/fat free etc.

pinkbasket · 18/09/2010 19:31

I am definitely an emotional eater. I know why I am, I know why I do it but yet I still do Hmm.

well done pink basket. get some scales and i'll help you through next week if you want.

your body tells you after about day 3 that you need the sugar " buy chocolate" it says " onepiece of bread wont hurt" it says - its really hard. i'll check in withy ou and we can swap ideas on what we had for meals.

i dont eat breakfast but scrambled eggs is great using cram not milk

you cant have milk

or sugar in your tea or coffee

v. imp you remember that

drink lots of water and get some vitamin suppliments if you can - poundland sell em.

maduggar · 19/09/2010 07:56

pinkbasket, I was a total eotional eater too, Id have super halthy meals then pig out on rubbish in-between when I wasnt even hungry :( Now I take 20 mins a day to listen to the mind technique CD and have not touched crisps or chocolate for ages!

pinkbasket · 19/09/2010 08:52

I am going to have scrambled eggs for breakfast and can't bare tap water but is sparkling mineral water allowed?

I don't drink tea or coffee so that is easy but I did buy some soya milk yesterday to try as I think I might have a problem with dairy. Maybe the kids can have it?

I am undecided about the scales as they are probably right and I am just fat but just want new ones.

I am doing roast pork today and I will pass on the roasties and stuffing and just have it with veg.

madugger - what is the CD?

Thanks for all your help :).

My period is late and I am certain I can't be pregnant so it will be a good test to get through without chocolate.

I only have double cream or creme fraiche so maybe I should just have bacon?

OP posts:
HumphreyCobbler · 19/09/2010 09:15

double cream will be fine

good luck with it all

pinkbasket · 19/09/2010 09:29

Thanks. I had bacon instead. Never very well thought out when we are having roast pork for lunch.

i tried this and fell off the wagon....but i did lose weight!!

i love the cream in my coffee

only prob i found with low carbing, was the tiredness i felt.

after reading this hread, think i'll give it a go again

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 19/09/2010 10:01

Absolutely agree with everyone that if you haven't lost trying on your own then you need structure and you have to find the thing that makes you think, I can do this. I know low carb isn't for me, would hate meal replacements and I need to be able to have large platefuls or I'll be utterly miserable.

It was a toss up between WW and SW, I've done both before. I have chosen SW as I liked the sound of their Extra Easy plan which is relatively new and I hadn't done it before, the right choice as I've found it really easy. WW I tend to abuse as I would cook low point meals to save points for chocolate and cake which I felt wasn't helping me to make long term changes, but it works brilliantly for others, as does low carbing for others.

Spend a little time thinking very realistically about what you need a diet to be eg. Easy to fit round family meals, structured vs flexible, allws you to eat sushi/chocolate or whatever your favourites are in mderation vs avoiding them as you know you can't have just a bit and it will trigger a binge. Once you've decided that you can decide which one will suit you the best.

pinkthechaffinch · 19/09/2010 10:02

If you haven't a clue about calories then maybe give this website a visit- it's a free 24 hr trial and then approx £8 monthly afterwards if you decide you like it.

www.weightlossresources.co.uk/member/membershome.htm

I use it to maintain my weight and it's surprising how many calories you can have and still lose weight. You can input calories earned by exercising too, which can be an incentive.

You do have to weigh food to start with, which can be illuminating-large bowls of pasta esp.

pinkthechaffinch · 19/09/2010 10:04

Low carbing is fine for the short term-but this is really good for re-educating yourself on long term portion sizes.

pinkbasket · 19/09/2010 10:07

I feel so ill today. I have a head ache, stomach ache (period coming I think) and feel so spaced out and tired. I feel hungry already but I am determined to do this. I think I have a thyroid problem but my GP doesn't so I am having blood tests done and we will see.

It doesn't help that ds2 is crying and moaning. No wonder I have a headache. Just taken 2 paracetomol.

Am I allowed lemonade?

If you are going to go for a carb-free diet let your doctor know, because it can be dangerous. Some people don't metabolise protein well and it can lead to health issues and even death. If, for example, I went on a no-carb diet it could have very serious consequences for me as I tend to suffer from hypoglycaemia (basically the opposite of diabetes). Hypoglycaemia is not serious in itself in that I just have to make sure I eat regularly but if I didn't eat carbs my blood sugar could go dangerously low and lead to fainting or seizures. Most people who suffer from this don't know they have it as generally you just feel a bit rubbish, eat and feel better. Also, a completely protein based diet changes your metabolism and can have nasty side effects like greasy skin, teeth problems and an increased risk of osteoporosis.

There's some info on it here: www.weightlossresources.co.uk/diet/atkins_diet/atkins.htm

Have you tried keeping a food diary for a couple of weeks? It can be helpful to see what foods you are eating so you can consciously cut out useless calories like biscuits and crisps. Don't buy the tempting things when you're at the supermarket, take a list and stick to it.

Also, I know it sounds unlikely but it is possible to build up a sort of "addiction" (in a good way) to exercise. It takes a couple of months but if you're hard on yourself for those months it gets easier and easier. Coming up to my wedding I told a friend about wanting to tone up and he forced me out of the house (very much against my will) every day for a walk. After a few months I got so used to the good feeling that exercise gave me that I actually had to go out and I really missed it if I couldn't. Eventually I built up to running and by the time I got married I was slim and toned! My friend got a huge thank you for that. Could you pair up with someone and mutually force each other out for a walk every second day or so? Or perhaps go swimming twice a week? It's a huge stress reliever too and should help with comfort eating.

Good luck!

pinkbasket · 19/09/2010 10:36

I seem to have a problem when I eat bread and dairy so that should help if I cut them out but I do get light headed at times. I know I am doing everything wrong. I don't buy cakes or biscuits and I bake every day but the kids eat it, I rarely do.

My body has changed so much after having number 3.

OP posts:
pinkbasket · 19/09/2010 10:37

I do enjoy exercising but it is demoralising when you don't lose any weight. I used to eat a lot more and stay the same weight.

OP posts:
pinkbasket · 19/09/2010 10:46

Another question please - when you say try 20 a day does that mean to not eat more than 20 a day? I have googled to find veg high/low in carbs to see what I can't/can have but not sure what is classed as high. (I told you I knew nothing).

OP posts:
pinkthechaffinch · 19/09/2010 12:18

Say your calorie allowance is 1650 a day with the aim of losing 1 pound a week (might be more or less depending on your height and weight)

If you then exercise for 30 mins, depending on what it is, you can also eat another 70 or so calories. therefore if you exercise more and eat the exercise calories, you will still lose weight.

Not sure if I'm making sense Grin

pinkbasket · 19/09/2010 12:31

I normally exercise for about 25 - 30 minutes and lose 100-130 calories. Feels like I have to do about 2 hours of exercise to lose anything at all and my period has just started. I am starving. Just made yummy apple and honey crumble and raspberry and lime coconut brownies for the kids and can't have any Sad.

How am I doing?

OP posts:
Tortington · 19/09/2010 14:21

cant see your link becuase its on your loggin and isn't public ( i dont think.

you can't just eat any veg in any portion sizes.

you can have sugar free lemonade only.

how much do you have to lose?

what veg have you eaten today and how much - please measure in teacups e.g. ' i have had 1 teacup of mushrooms

Tortington · 19/09/2010 14:23

pick your diet - eaither carbs or calories DO NO do both.

you can eat as much protein as you like - you could eat chicken or tuna til it comes out your arse if you want - you shouldn't be hungry, you do not have to deny yourself protein.
