Travelling long distance with pens how can I manage this

MorningYawning · Yesterday 10:35

i am about to sign on the dotted line for a 6 month sabbatical from work to do some travelling. For most of this I’ll be staying with friends in New Zealand.
I will have 3 pens which I’ll need to keep refrigerated and I don’t know how to do this over the approx 48 hours it will be door to door.
Then when I am there I would like to keep the pens that need refrigerating hidden.
would anyone have any advice?
im looking at this: https://amzn.eu/d/03FTeQD5
am i right in thinking that with the gel pack it holds 2 Mounjaro pens and without it it is 3?

FRIO do insulin pen wallets which are brilliant. You soak them in water then let them drip. Once dry they are very effect and work on a water evaporation principle. Don't put in plastic bag (I learned that hard way!)

The Frio packs don’t keep pens at fridge temp though, which you would need to keep the unopened pens at. They keep pens between 18 and 26 degrees which is fine for an in-use pen but no good for an unopened pen.

Looking at that listing, and the pictures, I would say it holds 3 pens with the gel.

Unless you will have enough privacy to keep a tiny fridge in your room in NZ you are probably going to have to fess up to your hosts and use their fridge. I can’t think of anything you could pretend your Mounjaro is and then put it in their fridge.

Watching this thread as I’ll be travelling for at least a couple of months & perhaps more next year, & I too would like to know what to do when that happens.

My wegovy was delivered without ice packs this week, apparently it no longer has to be transported chilled. Maybe worth checking what the current transport requirements are before making a decision?

The flask you linked to is over £130 you really don't need to spend that much.

I bought this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07K9YZYY8 for £22ish and it does the job fine, keeps cool for a long time. It comes with a shaped freezer block and also a flask you can fill with water. It also comes with a thermometer, so start off your journey with the freezer pack and check the temperature after 24 hrs (it will still be nice and chilly at that point) and then every few hours to keep track - eventually you'll need to switch to the flask, just ask for a drink of iced water and use that instead of the freezer block if it warms up too much. Mine only takes 2 pens but even 2 flasks at £22 is better than one at £134 if there's a size difference!

You can easily fit 3 pens in a plain pencil case like this www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0FX2R1J1L but I don't think you'll be able to keep it completely secret without some convoluted lying. Is it really important to keep is secret? Surely your hosts will need to know what's going on, as you need small but nutritionally dense meals which will be awkward if they are assuming they are hosting someone with a more normal appetite.

I had to carry insulin abroad and bought the first aid ice packs that you bash to activate. In a cool bag they kept it at fridge temperature and I was going to southern Europe in the summer.
