MJ not really working

Hi,

Been on MJ for two years now and it was brilliant at first. Got up to 10mg and lost 3 stone.

I then had a very traumatic bereavement so things went haywire. Drank too much and put a stone back on. Then the price hike happened so I stopped MJ and tried Wegovy which did nothing.

Ended up back on MJ & had to start from 2.5mg again.

Been losing very very slowly and shifted half a stone but yet another week has gone by and I’ve just plateaued. On 12.5mg now which is costly so I’m wondering whether to just pack it in and try something else. I’ve joined a gym which is certainly helping mentally and toning me up but what would you advise?

i do get some suppression but its nowhere near as effective as when I started so I wonder if my body has just got used to it??

Do I try going up to 15mg which is going to be an expensive mistake if it doesn’t work?

Try something else (eg pills rather than jabs)?

Help!! Interested to hear from anybody who has a similar story and managed to get out of this rut!!

How much do you have to / want to lose ? Whats your BMI ? Are your expectations realistic ? At the risk of sounding patronising you already nominally a miracle cure and diet and exercise still very much play a part . It took me 2 years to shift 4 stone but I’ve kept it off for a year now , although still jabbing fortnightly ish for maintenance , I’m a bit obsessive about my steps/ exercise but not so much about what I eat

Sorry to hear about your bereavement. That must have been a really tough time for you. Joining a gym was a great idea and I hope you’re finding it beneficial?

If you’re at or near to a healthy bmi, then losing weight gets much harder naturally and you really have to push through and focus on eating much less just to lose a measly pound a week. I’ve lost almost 5 stones overall and looking to lose up to another 7lbs but it’s extremely slow going now and I don’t want to increase my dose just yet.

What are you actually eating? Are you actively calorie counting and sticking to around e.g. 1400 cals daily or are you trying to eat healthier meals, mainly lean protein, veg, fruit etc but much smaller portions?

Or are you still expecting the drugs to do all the heavy lifting?

I think after such a long time, your body gets used to MJ and whilst it stops you massively overeating, it might not be giving you the satiety you previously felt and that’s when people often move up the doses.

However, as you’re already on a high dose it might be an idea to review all of your diet and think about what changes you can make without increasing the dose just yet?

Another possibility is to join a group like slimming world, Weight Watchers etc. to get that in person weekly support to help you keep track and eat healthily and continue to slowly lose the weight. You don’t have to tell them about being on the jabs, if you don’t want to.

I don’t think swapping to the pills offers a realistic solution at the moment as they’re far less effective compared to Mounjaro. In terms of effectiveness, MJ is top, followed by Wegovy injections, then Wegovy pills then foundayo pills are the least effective from the studies that have been done. I’m looking at the foundayo pills as a possibility for maintenance after titrating down.

Good luck.

I am not entirely in a similar position, but I am just on the boundary of BMI 25 after losing 11 stone over 2 years on Mounjaro. Weight loss now is very slow and very much harder to achieve than in the early days. I am on 12.5mg which does have some effect but not as much as it seems like it used to when I was still obese.

I find I really have to work with the medication, really concentrate on eating as well as I can and keep my activity levels high in order to lose weight now. That's a decent daily step total plus additional exercise. Also, one week of not losing isn't worth panicking about and making snap decisions.

I also agree that swapping to the tablets is not a great idea. You have already found that Wegovy doesn't do much for you, and the Foundayo tablets are less effective than the Wegovy ones.

Are you taking measurements? You mention going to the gym and toning more, sometimes this can affect what you see on the scales but your body Will still definitely be changing 👍

I'm on Mounjaro 12.5mg and I find having homemade vegetable soup with no bread is a great low calorie lunch.

Yes, a lot of the healthiest fit people are slightly overweight according to BMI. And some of the fittest athletes are obese!

SilenceInside · 11/10/2026 20:14

@seahorsessky surely not actually obese, but in the obese BMI range but not due to body fat but due to muscle mass? So not obese, not carrying excess fat, but falling into that BMI range.

Wildgoat · 12/10/2026 09:32

The drugs don’t do the heavy lifting unless on too high a dose, we need to diet

what is your current bmi and dist like ?

madameimadam · 12/10/2026 18:40

Thanks all. On reflection, there’s no surprise my weight hasn’t shifted if the recent thing that’s different is hitting the gym. Been doing weights a lot more recently which might account for little if no movement on the scales. I am feeling more toned and am going to focus on how I feel and the tape measure rather than the scales.

Ideally, I want to lose another 2 stone but I probably could do with taking a fresh look at my diet. I’ve got used to smaller portions and feeling fuller sooner that I haven’t really taken a massive amount of notice of things creeping in (like how much oil I use, sauces, etc). I’ll keep a food diary and see what happens.

Thanks all!
