Mounjaro not working after a break - anyone switched to another weight loss treatment and had success?

I successfully lost 8st with MJ between Jan 25 and Jan 26 - reaching 10mg highest dose - then had a break of a couple of months as I had to have my gallbladder removed. I gained just over half a stone after my op. Since restarting MJ, I’ve worked up from 2.5mg and I’m now on 12.5, so higher than I was the first time round, and I’ve lost absolutely no weight at all. In fact I’m currently a couple of pounds heavier over than I was at the start!

I just can’t afford to keep taking it for fun and I’m wondering if anyone has switched to Wegovy injection or tablets (or there’s this new one come out that is different altogether) and had any success? Or any tips to actually help the MJ kick in again? I’ve only got another stone and a half that I want to lose, but just seem to have hit a brick wall and can’t get there 😩

Not trying to teach you the basics as you’ve been around the track before, but as you don’t mention it……the reason you lose weight is the calorie deficit, not the dose.

Have you recalculated your TDEE and deficit and tried tracking calories and macros for a while to see where it is going wrong? Are you struggling to stay in deficit and need more support from a higher dose, is your deficit not low enough, can you change how/what you are eating to work with the medication. That would be where I would start.

Generally in trials the other GLP1s are less effective than Mounjaro, but some people have successfully moved.

I’m just getting no appetite suppression at all, other than the first day I jab. I’m trying to stay in a deficit, but that’s never worked well for me, hence being nearly 10st overweight in the first place 🤣 I’m tracking calories via Team RH and I know I’m going over, but I’m so damned hungry all the time. Only place left to go is 15mg which I really cannot afford, and, as 12.5 is doing absolutely nothing, I have very little hope that 15 will, but I’ll have to give it a go.

@JBJ you may already know about Medicine Market Place but they are currently the cheapest by a long way for 15mg without needing any referral or new customer discount. The only "catch" to their deal is that you have to agree to re-order within 35 days otherwise you won't be able to access the cheaper prices.

You know that you’re not actually hungry as you have learnt using MJ that you can survive on far fewer calories so the hunger pangs is your brain telling you porkies.

It’s like an addiction and some people with addictive behaviours respond well to hypnosis so I recommend trying a few hypnotists to see if anyone can turn that switch off in your brain permanently.

My GP cautioned before prescribing MJ to me that I’d need a longer term plan to keep the weight off. I’ve had hypnosis to treat an addiction so I’ll be going back for another couple of sessions once I reach my goal weight.

I’ve tried hypnosis 4 times in the past and I’m just not susceptible to it unfortunately. Maybe “hunger”
is the wrong word, as I know I’m not physically hungry, but the food noise and complete obsession has returned with a vengeance and isn’t going away as I’m moving up doses, whereas the first time it worked like a dream.

Hi I'm Zeinab. Your body is doing something important: it's healing 💖
An operation is a big event. While your body recovers it needs extra energy, and it protects that energy by adjusting your hunger and stress hormones, which makes losing weight temporarily harder. That's just your body doing its job. Give it time.
And you're 8 stone lighter now 😁 Once you're properly recovered, you'll likely see the medicine work better again and that's the moment to shift focus to body composition: protein, strength work, building muscle.
For now: rest, plenty of nutritious food, and talk it through with your prescriber before deciding to switch. Mention the gallbladder surgery too, it changes how you digest fat.

As much as I appreciate that I’ve been healing, it’s been nearly 7 months since my op and all I’m doing is regaining weight slowly and bankrupting myself in the process!

Wegovy is like the less powerful version of mounjaro - it targets GLP1, whereas Mounjaro targets GLP1 and GIP. So if you’re finding Mounjaro is not working for you, Wegovy is likely to be even less effective. I personally wouldn’t waste money on Wegovy after using Mounjaro as I don’t think it’s worth using an ‘inferior’ (for want of a better word!) drug.

QueefQueen80s · 07/09/2026 18:27

I think this is just what happens when we get used to the drug and we have to then use more willpower, it’s hard

MildlyAnnoyed · 07/09/2026 18:47

I switched to Wegovy & I found it useless. I’m not taking anything now & ive gained weight which makes me really unhappy. I’m going to have to be really strict with calorie intake. I become obsessive quite quickly so I’m not looking forward to it. I don’t have much other choice though.

NoTouch · 07/09/2026 20:00

How is your diet looking this time around, any options to increase protein throughout the day, and more higher volume/lower calorie foods to try to get that sense of satiety. Also of course plenty of water too.

JBJ · 07/09/2026 21:22

Diet is pretty good, hitting protein goals every day and drinking 2-3l of water. Just eating too much as I just can’t seem to fill up, the same as I’ve felt for the 46 years prior to taking Mounjaro! Food noise is definitely back. I could understand if I was just used to it, but the highest I went before was 10mg, then actually dropped down to 8mg as I was getting constipated (plus could get 5 doses out of a pen). This time, even 12.5mg isn’t doing a damn thing, apart from the first day that I jab. It’s just like I’m immune to it now.

I would try volume eating to fill yourself up. As they put it on Reddit, "maximum food for minimum calories".
