I really want weight loss meds to work, but I feel like they do something weird to me

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if so did you persevere? So far I've tried mounjaro and wegovy. I found mounjaro a lot more effective, but it gave me such a weird feeling that I stopped. I stayed on 2.5mg for a while, then when I started getting really hungry I tried going up to 5mg. I lost just over 2 stone but it made me absolutely disgusted by food. I couldn't stomach any meat, most fruit/veg or anything else. The thought of getting home and cooking a meal, or making a healthy lunch made me feel so nauseous and grossed out

The only food I could stomach was toast, grapes and apples but they gave me horrible reflux which I do suffer with anyway regardless of the jabs. I just felt like I was finding it really hard to change my life and build good habits around healthy eating because I was so disgusted by everything and I knew it wouldn't have been healthy to lose 6 stone surviving on toast

I also found the same with wegovy, although I was really hungry all the time whilst taking that but still disgusted by the thought of eating so again I wasn't making very good choices

Has anyone experienced similar?

Not really, because I’m only moving up the doses very slowly using click counting. It’s been a year and I’m only on 4mg now.

If it had been working ok on 2.5mg but with reduced suppression, why didn’t you try dropping back down to say 3.5mg instead of ditching MJ altogether?

ThirdStorm · 17/08/2026 15:36

5mg was too strong for me and whilst food didn't disgust me, I absolutely didn't want to eat and never felt hungry. I've dropped back to 3.5mg and feel much better right balance. I can enjoy food but it stops me snacking/overindulging.

I’ve been on wli for a while - Mounjaro then wegovy which I’m still on. I have the same and having to split doses otherwise it’s like being a bit unwell and only being able to cope with really basic foods eg toast. So I find it harder to eat enough protein and can’t always stomach the veg I used to eat lots of prior to being on it. I’ve now tried splitting the dose which has helped a bit but I’ve got a sweet tooth which I didn’t much before ! It’s working but I’m having to force healthier eating whereas before I ate plenty of veg etc just too much !

Sounds like either the meds don’t work for you and trigger something or maybe a strong placebo effect.

The drugs shouldn’t make you feel disgusted by food, there is nothing in them that would cause that, for you to feel both hungry and disgusted simaltaeously. I’d say I think that maybe quite unusual

not feeling hungry or not fancying something ie chocolate and having no interest, is very different to feeling disgusted.

do you have a history of eating disorders ?

you could try the pills as they are weaker, otherwise you may just have to say it’s not for you,

It's such a weird feeling isn't it. I've just swapped over to the tablets instead, starting on the lowest dose so I'm going to see how I get on. I'm hoping maybe a lower dose daily might be easier than doing the jab once a week

Spanador Yes very weird ! I wonder if it’s more about not being hungry enough to want real food . I always feel a bit full maybe I’m eating too much still! Will be interested to see how you get on with the tablets . I really hoped they’d be a more affordable option but they are more expensive or were when I last checked otherwise I’d try them too .

Wegovy has given me a massive sweet tooth too! I've never enjoyed acidicy type sweets but can eat a bag of Haribo Tangtastics in one go although I feel sick after and I love fruit juice which never appealed to me before.

As for meals, I've had a steak and peppercorn sauce in the fridge since Saturday but just can't be bothered to cook it. Im' not motivated to cook. I just can't be asked anymore.

Today I've had two toast, some boiled mushrooms, and a small hash brown for breakfast and felt stuffed. I had a small baked potato with cheese for lunch. Just had an open sandwich and feel totally stuffed.

Nothing edible really appeals to me much anymore. I eat to survive and stop the grumbling stomach but I just don't get that excited about food anymore or if I do by the time I eat it it doesn't fulfil my expectations like it used to and I get no joy from it anymore. It's sad really. But I've lost 4 st 7lb so glad I'm on it, but do question whether it's the miracle I once thought it was. .

Maybe the sweet tooth thing is to do with being thirsty ? It’s annoying isn’t it. But like you it is still working for me , i am calorie counting and eating less over all. I just know that when I’ve come off it in the past I’ve quickly gained again . Also I have plateaued more recently but I think I am starting to get through that now .
