Magnesium for chocolate cravings

I'm in maintenance and been on 7.5mg for 8 weeks (highest I went to was 8.5mg). I was doing fine and was going to start titrating down again, but these past 2 weeks the chocolate cravings have suddenly returned. A quick google highlighted that chocolate cravings can be linked to low magnesium and coincidentally my bog standard magnesium tablets ran out 3 weeks ago and I keep forgetting to pick more up. So I'm going to give magnesium another try before I consider increasing my dose, but just thought I'd share in case anyone else is battling chocolate cravings and also to see if anyone can recommend a decent brand as I'm happy to pay more if it does the job.

I like both the WellGard Magnesium Glycinate and SMUG Magnesium Citrate - both from Amazon.

Which one I take depends on whether MJ is making me a bit constipated. If it is, then the citrate. Otherwise the glycinate is the best absorbed by the body and doesn't act as an osmotic laxative in the same way.

But I would also say there's nothing much wrong with having a couple of squares of good high percentage cocoa dark chocolate occasionally either. I aim for around 80-90% .

I'm also in maintenance for the last 3 months, currently down to 5mg from 10.

This is really interesting. I've been on MJ over 2 years, on maintenance over a year). I started taking magnesium 3in1 a long while back to help with sleep and constipation so maybe that's why I never fancy chocolate now. Incidentally, my partner has also started to take it for nerve pain from a neck disc problem and swears it's helped like nothing else has.

I get the Nutrition Geeks stuff with a subscription from Amazon.

Thanks @GiveMeWordGames actually I have been constipated this last week or so and I've never had that up until now on mounjaro. Again I didn't link it to the magnesium - duh! Well done on your maintenance!

Thanks, you too!😀

Ooh that's interesting about the nerve pain @KrankyKumquat I'm glad it's working for him. I think some of the craving reduction must be mounjaro based too because it was the overwhelming cravings, food noise, dopamine seeking etc that led to me being the weight I was before mounjaro, and I'm pretty sure I was taking magnesium before I started on the jabs. I just obviously need both!

I take Magnesium for restless legs but it didn't affect my ability to put away a large amount of chocolate 😁 (pre MJ)

WeAllHaveWings · 15/08/2026 14:22

I buy these off amazon and they help with my sleep, constipation, leg cramps (i was deficient due to long term PPIs). If I forget to take for a few days I know about it.

Huge pack of 360, dose a 2 per day is 381mg of elemental magnesium which is quite high, I take 1-2 depending on how I feel so they last ages.

I haven't linked to chocolate cravings, I assumed the lost desire for chocolate was due to Mounjaro which I started around the same time.

Same @BerfyTigot 😆

Thank you @WeAllHaveWings

I just couldn't understand why the cravings have suddenly come back when I've been on 7.5mg for ages. Plus there's the constipation which again I haven't had at all since starting mounjaro over a year ago. Ideally I want to be coming down the doses not increasing them now I'm in maintenance, so I'm hoping it is all linked to the magnesium and not just a coincidence.

Those of you who take magnesium supplements, are there any brands where the tablets are not red or a similar colour and not massive?

Neither of the ones I mentioned upthread are red. They're both white. I'm not sure I've ever seen red/brown ones.

The SMUG citrate ones are slightly smaller capsules than the glycinate but still bigger than, say, a paracetamol.

MrsMiagi · 15/08/2026 19:59

I have found that the effectiveness of MJ varies massively while in maintenance. I have been maintaining since Jan. I just eat somw chocolate if i want some, but i do track calories to keep in check. I will try magnesium again, i havent been consistent with it. Hope it helps

Venusunbroken · 15/08/2026 21:51

I’ve taken magnesium for years for sleep, had no impact on my chocolate urges, if it had, I’d have been less likely ro need mounjaro,

CluelessAboutBiology · 15/08/2026 23:27

@GiveMeWordGamesthank you. I know it sounds daft, but ARFID means I can’t eat things that are red, inc tablets. Tablets usually come in containers that you can’t see through, so it’s always a risk buying something new if you don’t know what colour they are.

Magnesium, to get a decent dose, is likely to always be fairly big capsules. They are usually white. I think there are some dissolving powders you can get but I have never tried them.

I swallow two magnesium capsules and two utrogestan (HRT) now all together in one go no problem - it is psychological thing, once I did it a few times it was no problem.
