Travelling with weight loss injection pen to Greece: hand luggage or suitcase?

I am due to fly to Greece on Friday with an airport stay the night before so I will have to have my pen unrefrigerated for over 24 hours. I am hoping this will be ok if I wrap it well and have it in a cool bag with an ice pack? I am also wondering if anyone has transported it in their suit case or only in hand luggage? I know the is the guidance they’ll give but i would rather not have it go through security with me - I haven’t shared that I am on it with some of the people I am travelling with and concerned if I have to have a bag check or anything it might be pulled out. (Please don’t judge me for this, I already have a very judgemental sister who will be on the trip and it’s her I am keeping it from) 🥴

It isn't advisable to put it in your suitcase, hold temperatures go extremely low and you risk the medication freezing which would render it unusable (even if later defrosted)

I’ve travelled with them at least 5 times and always taken it in suitcase without issues.
A European flight in the summer does not go below freezing temperatures in the cargo.
but you are allowed to carry them in hand luggage too.

Carry them in hand luggage. You might want a letter with your prescription but I’ve never been asked for this (I carry insulin, not WLI). A cool pack is good enough for insulin but my DD has MS and takes extremely temperature sensitive drugs so for a 24 hour journey to South America she got a special insulated thermos type thing off Amazon that’s supposed to keep the medicine cool for 36 hours in 30 plus degree heat.

How long are you going for? Can't you take it the day you go and then the day you get back?

shrumps · 03/08/2026 17:11

I’m going for two weeks so will need to take it. I’ve ordered a little med carrier from Amazon so hopefully I can get through security without my sister noticing (I know this is ridiculous by the way, for two grown women but I will never hear the end of it!) thanks for your advice all xx

Medication should always go in your hand luggage

AgnesMcDoo · 03/08/2026 17:55

I always put medication in hand luggage

VividDeer · 03/08/2026 17:56

I left mine at home, much less stress

I carry epi pens for my son (4 of them) always hand luggage and have never been pulled up in security in the past 2 years since carrying them. I also have a pouch and cooling pack for them. Will be fine in hand luggage.

Always put medication in your hand luggage.

Let your sister go through security ahead of you. Tell her you need the loo or whatever and catch her up in duty free.

Where are you flying from? Many uk airports don’t require pouches of toiletries to be removed from bags now.

HappyWineDay · 04/08/2026 08:59

I use a BreezyPack pouch. These don’t use ice packs. They keep your pen below 30C due to a special material in the lining which slowly “melts” around 25C, so it maintains temperature at this level. When you go into a room below 25C the material re freezes so is ready to go again, so any hotel room is cool enough to do this. No need to find a fridge while you’re away and covers you for any periods when you’re in conditions above 30C.
So I travel with this and always take it in hand luggage. You only need to make sure the pen doesn’t go above 30C.

I always keep my MJ pen in my hand luggage in a cool bag when travelling

WomBat55 · 08/08/2026 12:05

I put it in hand luggage. I bought a medicine cooler bag off Amazon - I’ve gone through airport security a number of times with it including Greece and my bag has never been pulled for a search. They are well used to people carrying medicines like insulin through security.
the only travel issue I had with MJ was when the hotel room didn’t have a fridge (despite a fridge being in the room description on booking). It was sorted with a portable fridge being installed for me. In future I’ll always email the hotel in advance requesting one.
