Starting Mounjaro this week! Any tips?

Well after researching Mounjaro earlier this year and being told by my GP to go on it, I have bought it.

I did cancel a previous order as I was worried about the side effects by my GP said not to worry and it will benefit me.

I'm excited but also a little nervous.

I'm looking for tips on diet and what foods you found that increased side effects and were best to avoid.

thanks

I had some nausea at the start but it was manageable. Also a bit of constipation. I lost about three stone with no real effort just a reduced appetite and a lot less food noise.

I took no supplements or anything like that.

Good luck!

My main tip that is nothing to do with diet and foods is to read the paper leaflets that come with the pen, and consult them first if you have any questions.

Side effects for me were connected to things that I found hard to digest and therefore caused gastric upset. That’s quite specific to me though. Other than that, the general advice I would give is just to pay attention to how you feel when you eat. In the early days I found that I would suddenly get the “totally full couldn’t even contemplate another tiny mouthful” and it was important to notice that and stop eating. If I pushed and ate more, I would then feel uncomfortably full for ages.

There’s also the obvious stuff like prioritise protein and veg when you’re eating and minimise the carbs especially processed UPF type ones.

LividSummery · 27/07/2026 17:57

More protein
More water
Don't go up in dose every month, wait until you've plateaued at least three weeks
Don't feel like you have to go up by the full 2.5 when you do go up a dose, find out how to adjust your dose to suit you
Don't expect that you can lose the wight, stop the MJ and be "cured". Obesity is a chronic illness and I expect to stay on some sort of dose for life, like I would medicine for blood pressure or whatever.

Also, well done for choosing you. My only regret is not starting sooner!

susiedaisy1912 · 27/07/2026 20:25

Stay Hydrated
Prioritise protein
expect to feel tired, nauseous, headachy and have some constipation this is perfectly normal in my experience.
stay on the lowest dose until you aren’t losing weight for about 3/4 weeks.
avoid fatty rich foods
try to eat slower and eat less to see how your stomach feels. Good luck.

FormerFatty · 27/07/2026 20:29

I had no bad side effects at all. But I had little to no appetite, so I’d say make what you do eat as nutrient rich as you can. And I took a multivitamin and mineral supplement.

KrazyKatty · 27/07/2026 20:43

It’s not a quick fix so if you’re actually obese and not simply wanting to drop a couple of stones, then be prepared that you’ll probably have to stay on some form of glp-1’s for life. Hopefully, your GP will have already explained that to you?

Eat clean on jab day so simple plain foods. Focus on protein and fibre and nothing fatty. If I eat fatty or very spicy foods, I get horrible side effects!!

Great advice. Have you seen the UK GLP1 research results? https://mbk.life/pages/experts. It is right at the bottom. Spot on about protein and fibre, plus various other missing nutrients.

Thanks for all the advise.

I started last Friday and didn’t expect it to kick in until the next day. On Friday night I had a Chinese and only ate half portion of boiled rice and about a third of the main dish. The main dish wasn’t a sugary sauce and the meat wasn’t battered. I felt full very quickly and this stayed with me all night to the next morning. As PP said to eat clean on the first day, this now makes sense. Saturday I was with family so couldn’t plan meals but ate a much smaller portion than normal and avoided sweet treats. I drank water most of the day and only had one cup of tea.

my sleep was poor on Friday night but better on Saturday night.

i had a slight headache on the first two days that felt similar to a hangover. I upped my water and it went away.

I have lost 1.5 lbs already and this could be due to the Mounjaro but also I was watching what I ate during the week.

i have noticed that even though I am eating less I am not getting the usual feeling of low blood sugar that I usually get when dieting. This has stopped me dieting in the past as I have had reduce calories to a lower level to lose any weight.

Keep a few packs of dextrose (glucose) tabs handy. You can get in most supermarkets and of course Amazon, knocks it right on the head.

Thanks. I will order some as I felt awful earlier today and couldn’t put my finger on what was wrong until I had lunch and figured it must be low blood sugar but o didn’t get the usual hunger pangs.

Can you test your blood sugar? There are finger pricks you can get, I think? Even if you are not diabetic. Spk to your doctor and say u r suffering low blood sugar.

Pls dnt forget about protein, even a protein shake or even better, essential amino acids as you can put them in water or tea/coffee, even yoghurt. i make ice lollies with mine. Remember, protein is broken down into peptides, which then breaks down into amino acids, which then breaks down into essential and non-essential. Look it up. They are called essential because your body can only get them from food. The non-essential ones your body makes itself, on the basis (I think) you have eaten enough. Essential amino acids ones. My sis a dietitian. If we eat too less, your body will start to liquefy your muscles before fat. My sis told me thsi. Your organs need to function; they need food to function. That's why so many of us plateau on dieting/GLP1. We've started to use our muscle; hence our BMR drops. There is a great video in which a professor explains it to a doctor - a lady all about muscle health and other stuff. I love it because she says Doc can u explain that? (Thank god). I can add on here if you want to see. It's 5 mins. The prof + some other lady are the ones who did the new dietary guidelines in the US.

@purplepie1 , everyone’s journey is unique. People can tell you what worked for them and that might be a little bit useful but trying to compare yourself to others is the road to despair.
I believe that this should be a journey centred on health. Work towards that and you can’t go wrong.
This is a magnificent drug which supports our efforts but it is our efforts in the end which deliver our prize and more importantly keeps us where we want and need to be.
Don’t race up the doses but understand when it’s time to move on.
Focus on fibre and protein.
Throw your expectations out of the window! Some people are super responders and they are very fond of posting on social media about how they’ve done so well. I’m pleased for them but most of us are not like them. Most people lose 1 or 2lbs a week, often less in the later stages of their journey.
Weight loss is not linear and stalls are very common.
Please, please add resistance training into your life from the get go. Muscle burns calories and keeps us well.
This is one hell of a ride, use the time to read around health and fitness so that you can eventually go forward with confidence that you are able to maintain your weight and fitness.
Good luck!
