Going back to Mounjaro?

Littlelambseativy · 24/07/2026 21:31

I started taking Mounjaro in August 2024 and quickly lost 3 stone. I stayed on it, only ever getting as high as 7.5, but stopped a month or two ago, feeling that I wasn’t getting any appetite suppression, well, not enough to justify the cost. I tried Wegovy but I may as well have been injecting water.

I’ve put a stone back on, and I do want to get it back off, but if I start again at 2.5, is it even going to work?

I just wondered if anyone had any positive experiences of restarting.

People seem to forget that being on mounjaro isn’t a quick fix. You need to change your eating habits as well. I’ve just stopped after being on 15mgs yes it’s been great and helped me loose 4 stone but I’ve worked hard to change my eating habits and exercise more.

by all means go back on it and I wish you the best but i would also consider a dietitian to help advise if you can’t make better choices
regarding food. And I really do not mean this in a nasty way far from it. Xx

@BipolarBabe34 Your post is not nasty if that was the question the op asked. You seems to be answering a different question and making a lot of assumptions about if they have or have not made changes.

It’s like me replying to your post to say I’m not being nasty but if you’d made enough changes you wouldn’t have needed to go to 15 mg because I lost 8st never going above 3.75mg.

But that wouldn’t be fair or even true, would it? Because your experience and mine and the OPs are all different. And this is a support board.

morbidcuriosity · 24/07/2026 22:40

Not me but a friend, was up to 7.5 came off, went on wegovey, didnt work.. so she was off all of it for about 6 months i think.. gone back to 2.5 and said it worked again, but now on 5 and loving it!!!

Fingers crossed for you it works again.. you may have to get back up to where you were, you may not..

Littlelambseativy · 24/07/2026 22:42

Thank you - I appreciate the replies. I have no idea what to do. I did make changes, they just obviously didn’t stick. I know it’s not a quick fix, I’m kind of proof of that!

I think it's definitely worth going back on it. But you may find you need to get to a higher dose before you feel the full effect of it again, it seems to depend on each person but some people definitely report this.
As for feeling like it's not working, I've been there too. The suppression, lack of food noise definitely can drop off. But what you need to be aware of is that mounjaro works in other ways too which aren't noticeable to you. It affects the way your digestion works and actually helps fat burning. So even when the suppression is not there it is still benefitial in helping weight loss. It makes it much easier to lose weight if you can stick to a calorie deficit.
So what I discovered is that it is still worth using it even if you are having to make more effort / use more will power yourself.

Littlelambseativy · 25/07/2026 09:57

I appreciate that perspective. I just question whether it’s worth it for £300 a month.

FFS!! Losing weight and staying slim is not simply about changing your eating habits, for many of us former fatties who are using WLI.

For those who only want to lose a couple of stones for vanity, yes, they probably can maintain through diet and exercise alone. Good luck to them.

However, many of us with additional (usually hormone) issues, won’t ever be able to manage our weight by diet alone and will need to use some form of glp-1’s for life.

My GP prescribes my MJ and says it’s likely I’ll need to use glp-1’s forever. I accept that just as I would if I was a type 1 diabetic taking insulin or taking pills for a heart condition. The underlying issue doesn’t magically cure itself.

I think one of the issues with people buying MJ online with limited support rather than through their GP is that they’re not really aware of how it works on their particular body and think it’s just about appetite suppression and eating fewer calories. Unfortunately, after losing a lot of weight and coming of the WLI they become frustrated when the weight goes back on, not understanding that calorie counting alone won’t keep them slim, unless they literally starve themselves.

The OP might be someone who can stay slim after MJ, by eating carefully and exercising loads, or she might need to stay on glp-1’s for life. It’s not a failing!

@KrazyKatty I think it’s probably a lot easier to accept staying on a medication long term when you are paying NHS prescription prices for it rather than £250 plus a month.

Velvetandleather · 25/07/2026 10:29

No one can say what it’s worth to you, it’s not 300 for 7,5. It’s not even 300 for 10mg, The issue is you likely need to go back to 7.5 before you feel the effect again, anecdotally that’s the norm,

you clearly were getting suppression if by coming off you’ve gained so quickly.

did you just stop cold turkey? It takes about 2 years for new habits to bed in, so titrating down and staying at a low maintenance dose for two years is best.

the best way to come off is to hit goal, spend an extra month on that dose whilst reverse dieting, ie a hundred or so extra a week, then move down a dose and keep upping the cals, till you hit maintenance. The slow increase in cals offsets the slow increase in hunger. Then stick at your new low dose for 2 years as you adjust,

id really think about what’s your issue here, is it effectiveness or cost, as you say effectiveness but it reads like the real issue is cost.

you could try wegovy tablets if it is a driving factor.

Actually you’re very wrong, studies have shown the most successful users are those who have to pay privately for it. They make the most successful long term changes.

and it’s easy to be flippant about life time medication when you’re paying a tenner a month,

KrazyKatty · 25/07/2026 10:37

@SilenceInside @Velvetandleather

I don’t live in the UK and whilst I get a prescription from my GP, I pay a lot more than UK sterling prices for my medication, but thanks for your concern. 😎

Also, l live near an E Lilly plant where my friend works so I have access to extra info from her about the longer term drugs they’re working on.

SilenceInside · 25/07/2026 10:43

@KrazyKatty people respond based on the comments you make, and most people on this site are UK based and when they refer to a GP they mean an NHS one which implies that any prescription is at NHS charges. So free or £9.90. We are not to know that you are not in the UK.

SilenceInside · 25/07/2026 10:47

@Littlelambseativy all you can do is keep trying the various options. You can give Mounjaro another go and see how you get on. You may need to move up the doses, and accept that you might have to stay on a medium to high dose long term.

You could give Wegovy injections another go and work up to the 2.4mg or even the fairly recent 7.2mg dose if necessary. A couple of months might not have been long enough for it to be effective for you. The Wegovy tablets might be an option to try, but they are a bit less effective than the injections and not really much cheaper. But they might work for you.

FlorenceLawrence · 25/07/2026 11:39

I'd give the MJ another go - yes, it's expensive, but your experience shows just how effective it is, even if you're not really 'feeling' it anymore.
It's had a huge effect on my appetite and portion control - I think I'll be taking it very long term as I know that I will end up back to square one if I stop. I'm one of those people whose appetite just gets the better of them - and there are many reports of the appetite coming raging back a short time after stopping.
My Dsis is on it too and had to come off for 6 weeks for an operation. She said that those 6 weeks was all it took for her her disordered eating patterns to come back into her brain (she's an emotional/binge eater).
I'm aware that some can manage to maintain without MJ - I'm v envious of them.
