Stay on 2.5mg or increase to 5mg with Mounjaro?

hi all, I’m looking for some advice/experience about dosing. I’ve been on mounjaro for 7 weeks and due my 8th injection tomorrow so it is time to order my next pen. So far I have had 2 pens of the 2.5mg dose. I’m very short, so despite having a starting bmi over 30, I only have 20kg to lose in total. I responded really well to the injections and lost 5kg on the first pen and continue to lost between 0.5 and 1kg a week. After 7 weeks I am 10% of my body weight down. I generally have good suppression - although there are random times I do feel hungry, but I have no food noise at all and good satiety (not too bad that I can’t finish a meal though) and I do have to force myself to eat 1300 calories a day. I’m finding it extremely easy to make good food choices and am not obsessed with snacking or food as I was before.

I was planning on staying on 2.5 another month but I’m now second guessing myself as I’m worried it will suddenly stop working and perhaps I should go up to 5mg. My provider isn’t giving me any advice on dosing so I was hoping you more experienced users might have some words of wisdom?

thanks in advance!

With decent weight loss and no issues with food noise or increased appetite I would stay on the same dose for another month.

Sounds like you're doing really well - I would definitely stay on the 2.5mg pen. I moved up to 5mg without taking how well I was doing into account and it was the worst move up I've had (now at 15mg after 18 months) - I was very, very nauseous to the point of feeling very unwell - I stayed on 5mg for months after that and only started to gradually move up by click counting, when I felt like my suppression was waning. I have only very recently moved up to 15mg after a fairly long stall and I only now have 7lbs to lose, having lost 8 stone, so have really paced myself latterly.

I don't have many Mounjaro regrets at all, but one of them is moving up from 2.5mg to 5mg when looking back I didn't really need to! So if you're getting good suppression, limited/manageable food noise and a nice steady weight loss of 1lb - 2lb a week, that all sounds really good and do another month on 2.5mg - see how it goes and just keep it under review via what your body is telling you 🙂

I had the same worry and it didn't stop working so I stayed on 2.5mg for my whole weight loss journey, I experienced steady weight loss throughout. At times my hunger did come back so I had to practice my focus a bit more, but given the great results I was getting I found that easier than pre-MJ. Its only 4 weeks and you can order your next pen so not long to wait to go to 5mg if you suddenly find you need to.

When I bought my 2nd pen, I asked a 5mg one. Moving from 2.5mg to 5mg is the only time you'd double the dose, and most people recommend moving up slowly. I used clicks and stayed on 2.5mg for a while, before doing 3mg, 3mg, 4mg and finally 5mg. Even if you wanted to continue at 2.5mg forever, I'd personally buy a 5mg pen because it would last 8 weeks.

It doesn’t sound like you need to go up, so I would stick on 2.5mg.

I’ve been on Mounjaro for just over a year now and have stayed on 2.5mg and continued to loose weight. I don’t have particularly high suppression and haven’t since the first month but I also don’t have any desire to overeat either. On the couple of occasions I have regretted it afterwards more for how bloated I’ve felt rather than old style breaking a diet guilt I used to experience where I would plan to start again on Monday.

You might want to keep your options open and order a 5mg pen. You’ll save money if you stay on 2.5mg but can go up if needed. Just remember you’ll need to order every 5-6 weeks or the pharmacists may make you restart at 2.5mg - but that isn’t a big issue when you are on low doses anyway.

You sound similar to me - I’m 5ft 0” and started off at a BMI of 32.4 - I’m now just under 3 stone down (18.60kg), after 9 months in total. I was on 2.5mg for 5 months, then decided I needed a little more but didn’t feel I needed to go to 5mg so for the past 4 months I’ve been doing 3.75mg (45 clicks of a 5mg pen). It’s worked really well for me as I’m only 6lbs away from maintenance. I eat approx 1200 calories daily.

I would suggest you stay on 2.5mg for another month at least and see how it goes but just remember, hunger is good, we don’t need to chase suppression of our appetites, satiety is the thing to aim for and a reduction in food noise, which you seem to have already.

Thanks everyone - I think I’ll stay on 2.5mg for another month at least - I think I’m just waiting (or expecting) to fail as nothing has ever worked before so I’m second guessing myself x
