Experiences of stopping and restarting Mounjaro after some weight regain

Hello

I have restarted Mounjaro since my last order in August 2025. (My last injection was January 2026 because I used an insulin pen to take only a part of my dose)
All went well and even now I have managed not to put too much weight on, but I have gained around 10lbs. Thankfully not too much but enough that all my new clothes are getting very tight and my old clothes are in a charity shop but I never intended to wear my old size 16 after all the money it cost to reduce my weight.

Just wondering how others got on once they stopped and restarted-started. I have only had 2 x 2.5mg jabs and already don’t think of food often. It is a miracle medication I think.

I quit too in August just before the price hikes.

I'd been on it for 6 months and had lost 1 stone 10lbs. I was a bit disappointed really!

I noticed in April that my weight was creeping up again. I'd put on 7lb, but tbh I wasn't being careful at all. I was doing everything I promised myself I wouldn't do. I didn't get on very well with it and the nausea and quite often vomiting led me to eating so blandly. I was like a kid in a sweet shop 🤣

So my total loss was still 1 stone 3lb, but I felt like I needed some help so tried Wegovy (can't afford Mounjaro!) I took 0.25 April - May, just the 4 weeks. No side effects, eating normally just more controlled - I lost 11lbs!

I haven't actually carried on with it due to other finances taking priority but I haven't gained since May.

I'm planning on doing another 0.25 this coming payday. I've got 1 more stone to lose.

Anything I've gained has totally been my fault. Not even particularly through food noise or impulse control. Just pure greed! But I bought a Sainsburys 'The Best' pizza last week - oval shaped. I cut it into 3 and then each 3 in half, 1 or 2 slices was plenty, it lasted 3 days 😂.

Eggs are my go to. Those and randomly sliced tomato sandwiches. I've had a couple of takeaways but they last ages. I think it's because my kids have left home. I homecooked every day but it would be bolognese, chilli, curry, pasta and rice meals, plus the garlic or Naan bread, plus eating the leftovers - not enough to freeze, a waste to bin it.

What was the question? 🤣🤣

@TheGreyBee I had a similar experience to you. Last spring I lost 1.5 stone, I was on Mounjaro 3 months. Since the start of this year, 10 pounds had crept back on (bad habits creeping in) so I restarted 5 weeks ago and have had great success, it really does feel like a miracle drug! I've lost the 10 pounds, got 5 doses out of a 2.5 mg pen and now for cost purposes, I've got the 5mg pen and am planning to continue taking 2.5mg from that for 8 weeks. I'm hoping to get another 5 pounds off and then the aim is maintenance. I'm mulling over what to do next, really wish it was more affordable, would like to stay on a very low dose as long as possible, as I believe it helps my sleep apnoea by reducing inflammation.

@AlgaeDreams you made me laugh and also made me want a tomato sandwich 😂

That sounds great outofspace. Does your provided allow you to stop and start if there’s a few weeks break?

Sorry I’m getting confused about how to reply lol. Anyway - good to hear things are going well again for you @Outofspace

@AlgaeDreams Think we are planning to do the same thing. Order a higher dose but only inject 2.5mg it. Makes it cheaper the higher the dose if you are okay with working out the 2.5 dose. If 2.5mg needs increasing then I’ll go to 5mg. I never went higher than 5 mg before but when I weaned down to 2.5mg with the intention of stopping, I found that dose worked just as well for me.

@Outofspace you’ll get 10 x 2.5mg doses if you are happy to draw up the remaining liquid in the pen with an insulin needle. 💉 have you tried that yet?

I stopped and re-started after the pounds crept on. Only needed to be on 3 weeks by which time I had lost it all and some.

CoastalCalm · 16/07/2026 22:53

Providers will usually ask you to start again at 2.5 unfortunately - I tried Wegovy for a while and no suppression so I was allowed to start MJ back at 5 but I’d be very surprised if you could go straight to a higher dose

You probably won't be able to order a higher dose if you aren't ordering regularly. It's cheapest to buy a 15mg pen and stretch it out but it's also impossible to do that without building a big stockpile since they won't let you go longer than 6 weeks between ordering the higher doses.

TheGreyBee · 17/07/2026 20:55

@AlgaeDreams thanks for telling me about the six weeks ordering thingy!
I was thinking 🤔 would it be best to use savings and stockpile the 15mg pens and then they would last a long time. But.. what if I still couldn’t manage to keep my weight maintained afterwards.

I wonder if I’ll be more disciplined second time around to stay motivated not to overeat etc.

I only have used 2 x 2.5mg since restarting and already thinking I need to increase to the 5mg dose to get me back on track.

are you managing on @ 2.5mg dose?

I stopped in July. I really did try and yet 8 pounds went back on easily. I feel in a bit of a trap with this and would really like some advice and not judgment from others.
I am restarting today but really don’t want to have to take this longterm

I think all the pens sold now are the new type with no golden dose in them?

Bipaloss · Yesterday 09:37

Stopped November 25 after 4st loss in 7 months (at 12.5mg). Gained 1st (between week 2 and 9 of stopping) and restarted January . Due to the break I restarted at 2.5 and lost the stone by going up every 4weeks until I reached10mg. At 12.5 mg , I had a stall for 4 weeks. It was a real struggle to get the st off as MJ didn’t work like it used to. Now on 15mg I have lost 5lb in 4 weeks, working like it used too again . Many say you have to go up to last stopping dose before it works, this was my case
I stopped due to life circumstances but will never stop cold turkey again even if I have to be on a low dose long term . Still have 1-1.5 st to loose
regarding golden dose , until now the pens have been old style but my last 15mg pen was new style

MurielTheTerrible · Yesterday 09:43

I was on 15mg and plateaued for months, so I titrated down then stopped. I put on a stone, which pissed me off and my knees hurt again. I restarted after 3 months and lost nothing at all. However, I can't afford to be on it anymore especially if I'm not losing anything, so after doing 1x2.5, 1x5 and 1x7.5, I went cold turkey and stopped. If I try again, it will be after a considerable break rather than just a few months.
