Would I be unreasonable to try Mounjaro at a BMI of 27?

With the likes of MedExpress now offering mounjaro to anyone with a BMI of 25+, WIBU to take it? I am 5ft 6, 12 stone, so not hugely overweight. I’d like to lose 2 stone so I can be comfortably in the healthy category for BMI. I also want to get a handle on it before it spirals out of control. I had my baby 3 years ago and just can’t shift the weight, finding time to exercise etc is really difficult and I find I have no willpower and snack a lot on bad food as I’m always rushing around. I’m hoping mounjaro will kick start better habits for me.
My family and partner are firmly against it, saying it’s lazy to use it and should only be for very obese people. My friends who have used it themselves are much more supportive. I’d have to hide it from everyone apart from a select few friends if I did take it as everyone would be so judgemental.

Has anyone used it with success for a similar weight and BMI? How long did it take you to lose?

It was originally designed for obese people. Things progress and update as they go on. Minoxidil was originally used to treat high blood pressure. It's now a treatment for hair loss.

Not to mention that Viagra was developed as a blood pressure and angina therapy! Its current use came about from men reporting an unusual side effect…

Voy approved and is dispatching imminently, very humbling 😂

Good luck! Did you have to do a video consultation or just provide pictures?

I was coming on to say go for it.

I was BMI 28, I am 5ft 4 so even a BMI of 24/25 looks chubby on me. I got to my target weight of 3stone off in less than 5 months, I have lost another stone since and am now BMI 19.7. I have never gone above 3.75 my but mostly 2.5mg. I buy 5mg pens. I have kept switching to get discounts but have used Lotus recently due to f&f referrals and loyalty points.

I struggled with nausea to start with, could hardly eat anything at all but within a month or so I was fine.

I’ve got 2.5mg pens coming, all being well I’m thinking I’ll switch to 5mg and then either half dose or do 3.75mg.

Passport ID and photos - it took about 30mins for it to be approved by a clinician!

Same here re a humbling experience! - my BMI was just over 26 (5'7 and 12st3). I said I was 13st7 and 5'6, resulting in a fake BMI of 30. Took some photos in an unflattering mirror and was immediately accepted! I've been on 2.5mg for a month, just about to get my next 4 weeks and I've stayed on 2.5mg as I've had reasonable suppression and fullness, albeit needing a bit of good old fashioned willpower as I get closer to injection day. Mild nausea and constipation so combined with the fact I was already getting suppression I didn't want to go up to 5mg. I hope I can stay on 2.5 until I reach my goal weight (around 10st7), then I need to work out what to do! I started the jabs after months of curiosity and years of middle aged weight loss resistance (I'm 46, probably in perimenopause). First time I've been able to lose weight consistently because the jabs make it so much easier to keep on track throughout the weekend - not just Monday to Thursday!

That’s amazing, how much have you lost so far?

I am starting Thursday evening, so I can deal with any side effects before work starts again Monday. I’m still holding onto weight since my second baby.

My appetite was almost zero, slept really badly, unbelievable constipation, then one incident of terrible diarrhoea which stopped me taking it. I never moved off the starting dose in the whole 3 months as found it so strong, I was even taking half the starting dose some weeks.

I did everything by the book - lots of water, protein, very little fat. It just didn’t agree with me at all.

Same as you, I felt so sick and really not myself the whole time. Vomiting & diarrhoea the day after injecting (2 months of hell)

Farmwifefarmlife · 23/06/2026 22:22

Following as I also the same I’ve lost one stone via diet & exercise since Christmas, I’m now just stuck can’t seem to shift the weight no matter what I try! I only want to loose 1-1.5st I’m about the same weight as you. So following to see how you get on!

iluvlucy · 23/06/2026 22:32

When will people realise that exercise has very very little to do with weight loss ? Exercise is fantastic and should be done for health especially once menopausal. It’s got bugger all to do with weight loss. That’s why the ‘eat less move more’ mantra was such a pile of nonsense. The sheer amount of exercise required to lose a lb of fat is simply unsustainable long term. It’s all about how much you eat. MJ sorts that and knocks snacking on the head.
Never had a side effect. 20st to 9 at in 9 months. Maintenance for 2 years. Weight stable.

I’ve had a bad IBS flare up the past 24 hours which makes me nervous about starting on Thursday as planned now, though I have heard from people that mounjaro can help with IBS.

Have you adjusted your calories? If you eat less than your TDEE you will lose weight. My problem was that without WLI I could only sustain low enough calories for a certain amount of time.

Exactly, there are so many people across the WL boards who say they are doing x,y,z to lose weight, everything other than actually counting calories and wonder why they arent losing, or they dont adjust their calatoes as they get smaller. I had to adjust from 1388 to start with then eventually down to 1000. If WLI work well then a lot of people dont actually need to count calories, i didnt really but did for my macros but for some the suppression isnt that strong on any dose so can overeat still!

Exercise for the purpose of burning calories isn't good for weight loss, but a healthy active lifestyle - where you're burning some extra calories without thinking about it - does help. Especially if it means you're spending time enjoying yourself doing something that doesn't revolve around food.

This is my issue - to lose weight I was having to have very little calories (1200 - 1300 MAX), and whilst I could sustain this for a month or so, it was very difficult and resulted in binging and not being able to sustain it. If I had even one day over those amount of calories (for example a take away or heavier calorie meal) I wouldn’t lose weight that week.

I’m looking for advice from people who’ve taken it from a similar BMI as me, as all I am hearing from family is how terrible it is.

Yes people said the same nonsense to me 🤷🏼‍♀️ it comes from a place of fear, just look at the Covid vaccine rollout, there was a lot of ‘not enough research’ ‘I wouldn’t put THAT in my body’! And it’s worse for Mounjaro because people believe it’s a vanity thing, not realising the implications of being overweight (higher rates of cancer, heart disease etc…) even if just in the overweight category!

I was 28 BMI when I started taking it. I’m now a stone lighter, eating better and exercising again. It just makes it easier and I’ve had no side effects luckily. I’m on 5mg.

Yep, I put on and lost the same 10lb for several years. Mounjaro has been amazing, I have been around 8.5stone or under for about 3 months now, just need to figure out a maintenance plan really longer term.

6 weeks now and its been great. I was SO scared to start because I’m afraid of needles 😆 but it’s very tiny, you barely notice it

Mrsbadger77 · 24/06/2026 18:18

I listened to a really interesting pod cast from Zoe with the Dr Federico Amata - she's written a book. One of the things that really helps with success on this drug and limits some of the awful side effects is to lay the foundations now - get in the habit of eating really healthily before you start the medication. Make sure you are getting plenty of fibre and good stuff your body needs. Protein only makes any difference to muscle mass if you are strength training too. But absolutely, give it a go. I've started it recently and I have had virtually no side effects but I have started the jabs with really healthy habits already. My problem with weight is just that I love food so much I just eat too much! And am constantly thinking about food. But that has all changed now after only 2 weeks.

My husband the same. He couldn't cope with the side effects. Tried for nearly a year. Low dose then increased then went back down but the side effects were dreadful nausea diarrhea sulphur burps and he just couldn't deal with it.

Came off of them (I was gutted cos he was losing some weight despite all this) has now put the weight back on.

He just doesn't stop snacking.

Theres only so many times I can ask/advise him to be careful and I've given up now.

Do you think it was diet related which exacerbated your husbands symptoms?

Ah I had diabetes during pregnancy and had to do finger prick blood needles everyday, so I’m hoping it’s not as bad as that!
