Would I be unreasonable to try Mounjaro at a BMI of 27?

With the likes of MedExpress now offering mounjaro to anyone with a BMI of 25+, WIBU to take it? I am 5ft 6, 12 stone, so not hugely overweight. I’d like to lose 2 stone so I can be comfortably in the healthy category for BMI. I also want to get a handle on it before it spirals out of control. I had my baby 3 years ago and just can’t shift the weight, finding time to exercise etc is really difficult and I find I have no willpower and snack a lot on bad food as I’m always rushing around. I’m hoping mounjaro will kick start better habits for me.
My family and partner are firmly against it, saying it’s lazy to use it and should only be for very obese people. My friends who have used it themselves are much more supportive. I’d have to hide it from everyone apart from a select few friends if I did take it as everyone would be so judgemental.

Has anyone used it with success for a similar weight and BMI? How long did it take you to lose?

Do it! My BMI was 28 2 years after having a baby. Same height as you, but heavier. I'm now 9st 6 after six months :)

completelylostagain · 21/06/2026 13:38

Honestly I would try Wegovy pills they are taking pre orders for them now.

Peakcentral · 21/06/2026 13:40

I started at a BMI of 23 and have lost on average 400g a week over the last 10ish weeks. It stopped food noise for me pretty much overnight and I will stay on a low dose for as long as I have to as it’s been life changing.

Thebigonesgetaway · 21/06/2026 13:42

How come this is even a question. Whay if people say yes, what will you do, stay overweight?

do what you please, it’s a medication which you can be presibjed for the reason you wish.

I can’t imagine asking this question.

I’m looking for advice from people who’ve taken it from a similar BMI as me, as all I am hearing from family is how terrible it is.

What’s the benefit of these vs the injection?

@Lorrrrrredo it anyway don’t listen to them. You'll feel so much better for it and as you say use it to kick start the healthy changes. Good luck to you I know people whose lives are changed for the better they are different people now

it’s far easier to take a tablet, you don’t have think about cold storage delivery, messing about when travelling etc and while it’s easy to inject it’s still a process that’s harder than taking a tablet.

I was diabetic in pregnancy, is the injection similar to that needle? The diabetes one that you use to take a blood sample. I’m not too concerned about cold storage or travelling as I never do that.

Just give it a try. I took it with a BMI of 27 and had terrible side effects but I don’t think that was related to BMI, more that I’m prone to low blood pressure and low blood sugar.

Oh was that from not eating enough? What were your terrible side effects x

As long as you are paying for it, fine. However, it would be more sensible to sort out your diet for the longer term.

Yes it is. Fair enough if you would rather inject. I just think if I were starting now I would definitely favour tablets.

LivingLounge · 21/06/2026 14:25

My appetite was almost zero, slept really badly, unbelievable constipation, then one incident of terrible diarrhoea which stopped me taking it. I never moved off the starting dose in the whole 3 months as found it so strong, I was even taking half the starting dose some weeks.

I did everything by the book - lots of water, protein, very little fat. It just didn’t agree with me at all.

Private GP. Not cheap.

Private GP. Not cheap.

It’s about £130 a month and then £180 a month after the initial money off with med express. I don’t think that’s too bad but appreciate finances are different for everyone x

I’d say go for it.

I started at BMI 27, now back into healthy category 10 weeks later.

Yes I’ve had done side effects mainly nausea and constipation but nothing too bad or unmanageable.

NOOTNOOOT · 21/06/2026 19:49

I did it OP with Voy. I'm 5'5, was 10 stone 13

I'm 4 weeks on and I'm 9 stone 11. Not going to bother dosing up either, just going to stay on 0.25 (wegovy)

it's been a game changer for me. I have pretty strong will power but it was more so due to steroids I took for chemo previously.

side effects were headaches and constipation. First few days were miserable but it's fine now!

Theredjellybean · 21/06/2026 19:50

I was bmi 28 ..only ever needed to go to 3.75 mg dose.
Lost 14 kgs and firmly in healthy bmi now
It took about 4 months and I felt a bit sick but nothing bad.

A private GP giving it to a patient with a bmi of 23.7 is absolutely dreadful and they need reporting to the GMC.
There is no way that is in patients best interest.

The tablets are about the same price, less effective and have potential for higher SE as it doesn’t bypass the stomach like the injections do. Honestly I don’t get the fuss about the tablets, it is so simple to do one injection a week, you don’t even have to keep in the fridge if you’re using the pen within a month. I know there are some psychological reasons people are wanting the tablets, but practically and financially I don’t think they’re as good as the injections.

I know people paying over £200 so think you’ve got a good deal there.

Oh I was under the impression it has to be kept in the fridge and was worried about family finding it!!!

I didn’t realise the cost wasn’t any different, I’m not planning to change but I thought pills would be a good place to start for newcomers. I guess not then, still I’m hopeful to see reviews when they are here!

Do it. My starting BMI was 26, 18 weeks later it’s now at 20. Mounjaro has been life-changing and I’d stay on it for life if need be. Hopefully I won’t have to, now that I’ve built enough muscle (I did body recompositioning as soon as I started Mounjaro) I find that I need the drug less and less to switch off the food noise ie. dose too strong, have to space doses further apart so I can actually eat enough to meet my daily BMR of 1200 calories. Started at 2.5mg, now on 7.5mg looking to scale back to 5mg.
