Would I be unreasonable to try Mounjaro at a BMI of 27?

With the likes of MedExpress now offering mounjaro to anyone with a BMI of 25+, WIBU to take it? I am 5ft 6, 12 stone, so not hugely overweight. I’d like to lose 2 stone so I can be comfortably in the healthy category for BMI. I also want to get a handle on it before it spirals out of control. I had my baby 3 years ago and just can’t shift the weight, finding time to exercise etc is really difficult and I find I have no willpower and snack a lot on bad food as I’m always rushing around. I’m hoping mounjaro will kick start better habits for me.
My family and partner are firmly against it, saying it’s lazy to use it and should only be for very obese people. My friends who have used it themselves are much more supportive. I’d have to hide it from everyone apart from a select few friends if I did take it as everyone would be so judgemental.

Has anyone used it with success for a similar weight and BMI? How long did it take you to lose?

I think anyone who feels it would benefit should be entitled to try - the benefits seem to go beyond weight. The people I know on it did get REALLY old faces, though (but they recovered once they stopped).

oliviaAustin · 22/06/2026 09:49

I did. Lost 22kg, now a size 6-8, IBS gone, bloating gone, mental health the best it’s ever been, diet and exercise in point.

This is just loss of fat. People with lower BMIs aren’t going to have as much facial fat so are unlikely to look drastically different. I’m 31 and still getting asked for ID when on MJ.

My face looks old since I have lost 9 stone. I am almost 50, this is what my face would have looked like had I never been fat. I didn’t look my age before because my face was padded out by fat. WLI don’t make people look old. Aging does.

I also lost weigh on mounjaro but I have never ever seen this phenomenon of fat knocking years off a person, ever. I’ve never once heard anyone say gosh they look much younger than their age. I think fat is ageing, because you get the big belly and matronly bust, the double chins, the fat neck, the jowls etc with it,

I keep seeing people on here say they look older due to losing weight, and looked younger than their age fat, and genuinely I’ve never witnessed such a thing, under weight or overweight is ageing in my opinion. A health weight is more youthful. A face stretched out with fat is not a youthful one.

Try getting to a BMI of 25-27 and then losing weight with 'discipline' and tell us how easy it is.

Losing weight when you're close to a healthy weight is much harder than losing weight when you've got an excess, even if you're someone lucky enough to have an 'average' appetite.

I started wegovy at BMI 26. I have strength trained for ten years, practice a sport, use a standing desk with a treadmill to get my steps in and constantly thought about eating healthy. But my appetite would always beat my planned calorie deficit, which is around 1300 consistently to lose weight. 1300 is a small amount of food and doing it seven days a week, week after week is tough.

How much did you lose? Sounds like you had a good time with it.

Yes I think it is harder when you are close to healthy weight, I find to lose weight I am having to have a maximum of 1200 calories a day consistently - which is why I end up binging on snacks or big portions eventually. The only way to increase this to 1300 - 1400 calories is doing lots of exercise everyday which is tricky when you work full time, have multiple kids (inc toddlers) etc.

@Lorrrrrre only 3kg so far, but I've just done my first month, so I'm on the starting dose. I'm aiming to have just enough effect that I can resist snacking, or fatty foods when eating out as my day to day meals were already quite healthy/moderate calories.
A lot of people rate mounjaro as it is more effective, but it seems so effective that for a lot of people they barely want to eat, and end up either skipping meals or forcing themselves to eat when not hungry, so bear that in mind if you're at a lower starting point and especially if you're thinking you'd use it for short term rather than permanent maintenance. There's some specific threads on here for people starting BMI 25-27 that you might find useful to hear others experience.

I definitely look my age more now than i did 18 months ago. It’s not a phenomenon that more fat can equal less wrinkles in a persons face.

If you keep seeing people say something but you have never witnessed it, surely that means it might actually be that the peoples experience is real and you just haven’t known of it? Or are you asking everyone you see how old they are?

Runningswanker · 22/06/2026 11:36

Re whether losing weight is aging, I think there's a big difference between how someone might look in a photo compared to how they look in real life. We lose the plumpness on our faces with age, so losing fat can exacerbate that, and if the skin is a bit loose that's going to have an effect too. But if losing weight means you can be more active, you're moving differently, not out of breath etc then that definitely helps give an overall impression of being younger.

Sarfldner · 22/06/2026 11:36

LivingLounge · 21/06/2026 14:15

Just give it a try. I took it with a BMI of 27 and had terrible side effects but I don’t think that was related to BMI, more that I’m prone to low blood pressure and low blood sugar.

Does having low blood pressure mean you are susceptible to adverse side effects

To be fair the comment I initially responded was specifically about faces. Not overall ageing. I’m in far better shape than I have been since I was about 15. I probably do appear younger overall but my face, which is what we were talking about, has definitely caught up with my actual age.

Thanks that is what I’m hoping for too. I was hoping I could hover around the 2.5mg - 5mg to lose weight, rather than the higher doses.

Ah fair enough, I hadn't caught that! I do think it varies a lot for individuals too. I don't have great bone structure, I never had cheekbones even when I was young and very slim - on the plus side though it means I'm not likely to ever look 'hollow' because of my face shape.

I have low blood pressure and haven’t had any issues.

It definitely definitely makes a difference to some people (as I say, it seems to reverse if they stop taking them). Not saying it affects everyone in the same way cos idk and not saying it's not worth it anyway, just a consideration for people who might not have acute medical news.

LivingLounge · 22/06/2026 12:46

@Sarfldneri see PP with low blood pressure hasn’t had issues. No, it’s not a known thing, I was guessing why I reacted so badly. Perhaps it was the low blood sugar, as Mounjaro lowers it further. Really wish it had worked for me!

Exactly!

I started at just over 25 BMI and have lost 12 pounds in 10 weeks. I’m thrilled. It’s been so easy.

Honestly you could have lost that just eating salad & saved yourself some money. Getting MJ when you've got a healthy BMI is just ridiculous.

Simple to say doesn't mean it's easy to do.
If it were, no one would be overweight.

But when you use MJ, you don’t have to restrict yourself to salad..so yeah, no thanks!

I eat salad every day, sometimes twice. My BMI is still 27 because I have a life outside of obsessing about my weight.

To be fair they said just salad, as in only salad. Not salad with other stuff..😂

Voy approved and is dispatching imminently, very humbling 😂

I started Mounjaro 2.5mg in April with a BMI of 28. Had horrible side effects the first week but nothing since. Have stayed on the lowest dose.

I’ve gone from 74kg to 66kg over 3 months so nice and steady. Intend to stay on it a couple more months to get down to 60kg. I’m also training so putting on muscle.

The thing is 1) the money is fine. I’m very happy to spend it on something so unbelievably helpful and effective. 2) I could never have consistently eaten salads for 10 weeks without the WLI. I would have caved at some point and overeaten. The jabs have supported my willpower.

Money well spent!!!

WitchesCauldron · 21/06/2026 21:26

Because it's a drug designed for those suffering from obesity. A BMI of 27 isn't obese. It's ridiculous considering a weight loss jab when a few months of discipline could achieve the same results. These drugs should be kept for those who really need them.

It was originally designed for obese people. Things progress and update as they go on. Minoxidil was originally used to treat high blood pressure. It's now a treatment for hair loss.
