Has anyone started at 5mg rather than 2.5mg?

Has anyone started on 5mg instead of 2.5mg? A friend of mine recommended it because essentially it's cheaper (in terms of the drug you get) and she didn't get much effect from 2.5mgs. Has anyone tried this?

If buying through a legit pharmacy, they won’t sell you 5mg as a first pen as 2.5 is the approved starting dose.

Some people find it more effective than others -I found 2.5 worked instantly though the effects wore off after day 5 each week. I lost 6lbs in week 1 - ok some of that would have been water etc but it was still a dramatic loss.

Side effects also affect some more than others at all doses - at 2.5 I had very few - just suppressed appetite and occasionally mild nausea but going up to 5mg led to fatigue, feeling cold, and occasional gastric issues.

I’d recommend you get it from a legit source and take as indicated so you can see how it affects you. You can then choose to go up to 5mg for the 2nd one if needed.

No, and i don't know anyone who has. You wouldn't be prescribed a 5mg pen initially and to double dose yourself with a drug you have no idea how you will react to is stupidity.

Or she suggested getting the higher dosage and doing fewer clicks... but that sounds a bit hit and miss to me?

Everyone responds differently. I had really good suppression for the first month on 2.5mg.
The reason they put you on a low dose to start with is to enable your body to get used to it, thus minimising side effects.

I really think you should do some research and reading around this drug before you start taking it.

A pharmacy will not prescribe you a 5mg dose without you completing at least a month on 2.5mg. I would question where she's got it from- not a legit pharmacy that's for sure!

That's not what she did. That's what she is suggesting I do.

I’m on week 4 of 2.5 and thrilled with the suppression and lack of side effect. I’m hoping to stay on 2.5

I think your friend is talking rubbish.

I’ve been taking MJ for 9 months, lost 4 stones and have not increased beyond a 3.5mg dose.

Lots of people can lose significant amounts of weight on the 2.5mg dose as not everyone needs to move up a dose every 4 weeks. Every body is different and responds differently to the medication.

I would take advice from a legitimate provider, rather than a mate, tbh. Unless she’s a professional, which given the nonsense she’s told you, I doubt.

As above - no pharmacy will do this for you. You could probably source it elsewhere I expect - but you know what they say - fuck around and find out.

She means get a 5mg pen and do half doses to get 2.5mg, which means you’d get 8 doses out of the pen instead of the intended 4 doses.. But, she has not realised that you can’t start on a 5mg pen, you will only be able to be prescribed a 2.5mg to start with. And you don’t know what dose will work for you, you might need a higher dose than 2.5mg or 5mg.

Counting clicks isn’t hit and miss, unless you can’t count. It just means turning the pen mechanism half way instead of all the way for a full dose. The mechanism has markings on it, each one makes a click as you turn it. It’s 60 clicks for a full dose and so 30 for a half dose.

Ah ok, that makes sense now, thanks

Honestly OP, just get the 2.5mg and see how you get on. There is loads of support and advice on these threads (not all of it legit!) but if in doubt, take a professionals advice. MJ is a wonderful drug but you want to know what you’re doing!

Many people do buy the next dose up each month, even when not actually increasing their dose. But be aware that this is actually not allowed by the pharmacies and you need to keep buying generally at least every 6 weeks to prevent only being allowed to buy 2 5mg again. So ultimately youll ebd up with a stockpile. Saving money this way isn't instant, its long term.

MeridaBrave · 13/05/2026 16:40

It’s irrelevant as no supplier will start you on 5mg. I only did one month on 2.5mg and got a 5mg pen but continued to take 2.5mg - thus making it cheaper.
