Because I can, and they break the talk guidelines, in various ways.

SilenceInside · 20/04/2026 18:58

You’ll note that this thread stands, because it doesn’t break the talk guidelines, so nothing to report.

I see your point, I was only quoting the pp who was quoting the article. IMO the weight loss industry (in this example) is the pharmaceutical industry. Neither have a choice in the testing, which is governed by law, but both are medicalising a problem and bringing solutions to market.

ETA Im not defending the OP, I’m just saying I don’t feel the need to dismiss them the way some do.

Edited

Well I wrote that slightly wrongly, I meant to make a point about you asking the poster if they 'defended the industry'

Which would be the pharmaceutical industry.

Which I do, with regret, support them in the way they have to test drugs, for all our benefits. Its unfortunate but there we are.

Obesity is a medical problem

I can see why someone sensitised to judgement would see it that way. I can also see why someone would post a story about WLIs in the WLIs section. 🤷‍♀️

It's not actually a story about WLIs though, as others have already pointed out. It's just a nasty clickbaity headline which anyone, not just those "sensitised to judgment" (whoever they are?) can see is full of moral opprobrium.

Ihateboris · 20/04/2026 19:10

Couldn't they use fat convicted pedophiles, rapists and murderers instead of innocent animals?

likelysuspect · 20/04/2026 19:20

These threads do tend to assume that those of us who note that OP and those like them are just goady/judgey/wind up merchants - that we are on the medications or used them to lose weight

Neither apply to me. But I see the threads for what they are.

I think some posters are taking it personally, yes, and I’m concluding that they are sensitised to judgement. I decided against WLIs myself because of the side effects and decided to manage my weight loss differently. I don’t feel personally affronted by someone posting an article about WLIs in this section though. And the headline is specific, though the broader point is not. I mean, I take some medications to control an illness that otherwise might kill me. I rationalise it because of that, but I hate that it was tested on animals (and that newer versions have also been). I think it’s possible to support the use of WLIs and still be frustrated by the pace of change on live testing.

I haven’t seen any others so can’t comment, but as you say this one doesn’t. I’m not totally sure why you’re connecting them all.

Obesity is a medical problem

As I said, in this instance I think they’re one and the same.

Obesity causes (and is caused by) medical problems but there is debate about whether it is itself a medical problem. My issue with pharma in general is the medicalisation of some aspects of human experience. Pain, sadness, fat, ageing… Can’t just embrace life, gotta change ourselves. It’s exhausting. At the extreme end all of these can be life threatening but mostly we’re distracting ourselves from the problem. And I personally don’t feel great about killing animals in the pursuit of distraction, no. 🤷‍♀️

Whereas I conclude they're sick of being judged, yet again, which is subtly different in that it doesn't imply the judgment is all in their sensitive little minds.

But then I also don't think enduring pain is "embracing life". Sod THAT. 😂

You can chat on about animal testing all you like - I'm not biting. I'm here in response to the gratuitous WLI-bashing only.

The magic of the internet world huh? We can all have different opinions. It’s a thread about animal testing, I’ve not bashed anyone for using WLIs so your defensiveness is misplaced.

It's not all about you. You're not the only one I've responded to. So your defensiveness is misplaced in fact.

As I said before, I originally came onto the thread to counteract the usual misinformation about obesity. Then disagreed with you about the effectiveness of this thread in winning hearts and minds to a cause. And here we are.

It is magic how we can all have different opinions though. I do thoroughly agree.

Anyway, this is a crappy disingenuous thread which deserves to sink, not be active, and I've already done far too much to keep bumping it. No more from me.

It does read to me, looking at the comments, we ve got the jealous resentful crowd back again, salivating at the thought of one of their clan posted something negative,

it’s batshit, it really is and won’t abate till they can get their hands on these drugs.

I'm not sure why you’re needing to interrogate me about this. Of course you wouldn’t see why the posts were connected, because the threads and the posts have all been deleted by MN.

Crikey, a passing comment is interrogation to you? You brought it up, I was curious. Well done on getting them deleted I guess.

It’s a choice of word, possibly a little hyperbolic for effect, my apologies.
