BMI 25 have I got any chance of being allowed to buy weight loss injections?

That’s my question really - would appreciate any advice. For context I am 43 yo mother of three with my youngest 3 yo. I weigh 75 kg and want to try to about 70 and I am struggling to shift the dial via fasting and exercise.

the Boots website says you have to be BMI 27 or 30’eithout conditions to be allowed to start but wondering anyone else has managed it with a slightly lower BMI?

I genuinely don’t understand what you mean. I am not against anyone using WLI but trying to point out it might be a waste of money if you aren’t really that overweight. Of course anyone can workout etc. They work by suppressing appetite but when you get down to a normal weight your body has nothing excess to burn instead.

Don’t be silly you’ve nothing left to burn as you go underweight, not when you hit bmi 24.

WellConfusedandDazed · 01/04/2026 15:06

That’s great! I was just trying to point WLI might not work well (and be an expensive waste of money) if your BMI is relatively normal. Even with MJ I found it very difficult to lose once my BMI hit 27. Like 1 kg/month. It was a bit excruciating and some weeks I even gained.

Worked perfectly fine for me, down to a bmi 20, if you’re letting the drugs do the heavy lifting for you and not dieting then yes weight loss will slow.

OP said 'would appreciate any advice' – that includes people who have different advice to yours.

She said she’s appreciate advise on if she’s allowed to buy them, not any advise on someone having personal issues with them,

If that's your interpretation of advice forums, then you do you. I'll continue doing me.

Sure, next time someone posts about getting an abortion I will pop in and tell them I think it’s murder because I’m pro-life and that would be so helpful.

(I’m not pro life fyi, but nothing else felt quite as dramatic 😁)

WellConfusedandDazed · 01/04/2026 15:01

I am responding to OP not you. Only trying to point out it might not work well for her and be a waste of money. When I got to bmi 27 and lower on MJ it was VERY hard to keep losing even with the drug.

Someone with a lower BMI on a lower dose will have a very different experience to obese people. If it simply wasn’t possible to get to a much lower BMI you wouldn’t be seeing newspapers calling out “ozempic face”. Sadly, WLI can and do cause too much weight loss, a very tangible issue, both socially and medically I will accept is real.

Sparklybat · 01/04/2026 15:35

If you eat well and exercise and remain at that weight, that’s likely your body’s comfortable place right now. And it’s unlikely you have any weight related health impacts from a bmi of 25, so it’s about wanting a smaller appearance which does make me sad for society still.

Are you prepared to stay on them for life / as long as you feel a need to be a lower weight?

If you eat appropriately and lift weights you can maintain (or lose) weight whilst simultaneously losing fat and building muscle which means you will look a lot learner and be in better shape. The increase in lean muscle mass also means that you will burn a lot more calories even at rest.

Disagreeing on appropriate use of drugs isn't a moral crusade, it's a basic clinical judgement. Work on your debating skills.

insulting people doesn’t give you credibility, which you’ve now resorted to, lashing out and attacking. It’s dismaying.

you don’t get to disagree on appropriate use of drugs, you are not on the mhra, fda, who etc committees, ir is bizzare you think this is even a debate or an advice forum.

you are simply spamming mumsnet and giving people unwanted and often erroneous advice due to some personal hang ups. Trying to boss it into something it’s not is not going to change that.

If you want to debate the correct use of these drugs email the health authorities l and let us know how that goes for you.

And I would call comparing medical weight loss for someone at a BMI of 25 to calling abortion murder is rather dismaying also – and a few other choice descriptions.

Luckily you don't get to prescribe drugs either – very lucky indeed!

Spamming = replying to people who reply to me? That's not what spamming is. You can look back at the thread history to clearly see responses and replies.

I’m not going to keep arguing with you as it is utterly pointless.

so I will respond to the op;

op to answer your question, yes you are allowed to use the drugs at a bmi 25, you’ve been recommended the regulated pharmacies who will consider this for you, I have been maintaning at a bmi 20 on a low dose for a year now, all my blood test results are incredibly healthy and I feel very lucky I can afford them, and dismayed others can’t access.

good luck and if you need any other help, don’t hesitate to ask.

If you don’t understand my point then you have problems with reading comprehension. She isn’t overweight.

With a BMI of 25 she is classed as overweight.

she didn’t say that. She was giving examples of unhelpful, unwanted opinions!

Someone has linked to a thread I started a few days ago for those of us who have a BMI of under 27 and want/need to lose weight for a variety of reasons. Please join us for non-judgement.

Weight is a very complex topic. Many of us at a lower BMI have tried the usual ‘just lift weights’ and ‘eat more protein’, but it doesn’t always work, especially when we are in our 40’s and 50’s. A BMI of 26 is still overweight and if you carry it around your abdomen, as I do, it can also be dangerous.

Anyway, anyone who is looking for a non-judgy space and is curious about WLI, come and join.

Pls can you send thread link?

Hiya no I just want to get back to my original weigh after a very traumatic 5 years. I run twice a week, lift heavy weight twice per week, do yoga, eat very healthy and yet cannot shift my belly fat.

Oh, and for the people who told me not to be ridiculous: I eat whole food diet, no UPFs at all, have eaten healthily as a pescatarian for 30 years. I am now 43 having had three children. My middle daughter has a genetic condition called Prader Willi syndrome. I invite you to look it up as it is a sad genetic condition where children and adult adults are genetically programmed to over eat, and in some cases eat themselves to death due to constant insatiable appetite and hunger. I cook every single day for my family from scratch, including home-made granola for breakfast. I also have a child with dairy and soya intolerance so we have no processed food whatsoever and only wholegrain carbs, healthy fats and high protein meals. I have been exercising (running, hitt, yoga) on average 4 to 5 times per week for the last few years, I am the strongest I have ever been. However, I cannot shift the belly fat that comes with being a 43-year-old mother of three children. That is why I was interested in whether this was a feasible option for me. I am currently unemployed due to my middle child’s disabilities and therefore unlikely to be able to afford injections anyway - but thank you for fuelling my curiosity :)

@Contraversialcatergory ,sounds like you are juggling a lot, sadly I don't think you could afford the drugs legit if you're not working, but also just to say that you can't target specific areas either, however you lose weight, so a stubborn tummy is a stubborn tummy often due to cortisol issues, and sounds like you've a lot on your plate re your children's issues, might be worth looking into an anti cortisol diet instead.

Thank you I haven’t heard of this and also starting to think it may be my body stuck in a stress response

Op, as was said up thread med express and voy offer for bmi 25 but you need tk email the former at least.

price is from 150- 300 pounds a month, 150 would be lowest starting dose with discounts, and you very likely need to go up much higher, so sadly I’m not sure you can afford if you’re unemployed, but only you know your disposable income,
