Vomiting on mounjaro

I have moderate emetophobia. I also need to lose weight. So I’ve order my first dose MJ.

I'm terrified of having food poisoning type vomiting/diarrhoea using it. I can cope with a bit of nausea I think, but am worried that I’ll have huge GI sypmtoms that last ages. Lots of people on here talk of nausea, but not so much vomiting.

just looking for some reassurance or information that could be helpful.

Thanks for anyone taking the time to answer.

Taken mj for just over a year. Never vomited once

WhineAndWine1 · 04/03/2026 18:31

I had similar to dumping syndrome when I got to 7.5mg it went when I moved up the dose. I also get my bowel going into spasm if I don’t eat and drink enough which feels like bad food poisoning stomach pains. I also get a lot of nausea. Everyone reacts differently so it’s difficult to judge how you might react.

I've been on it almost a year and I've thrown up twice. Both in the night. Once in the early days when I ate a too big meal too late in the evening when I had to be up very early the next day and therefore went to bed early.

The other time I drank a bottle of fizz over the course of a summer evening. When in general I've barely drunk on mounjaro.

Both times were a "one and done" scenario. Nothing like the drawn out poisoned feeling you get from a food bug. More like my stomach just going "yeah I've had enough of what's in there now, out you get please"

So based only on my experience my advice is be careful about eating late, and booze.

I've had no nausea outside of those two instances.

Small portions. Eat slowly. Stop when you feel satisfied not full. If you eat too much and feel bloated, don’t eat more.
Maje sure you eat fibre and drink water and I recommended magnesium at night to help keep things moving.

Essentially what we should all be doing anyway. MJ just makes signal clearer. I do think it depends on person. My stomach is easily upset at the best of times without MJ. Other people might have hardier constitutions.

Id also recommend hypnotherapy for the phobia. My friend had it and it really helped.

I have been sick on mounjaro, but like a pp its one and done not continuous

Twasasurprise · 04/03/2026 19:05

I've been on it since July 2024, so over 18 months. I have not vomited or had nausea once.

I have had occasional diarrhoea, but just once on that day, nothing concerning.

I've always suffered greatly with motion sickness and had morning sickness throughout the entirety of my 3 pregnancies. So I expected vomiting from MJ and I was pleasantly surprised to not have it at all!

My experience was that after the 4 weeks on 2.5mg, I very slowly moved up my doses in tiny increments. I didn't go straight to 5mg, but 2.75mg, then 3mg, or even smaller increases. This wasn't the prescribed protocol, but I was comfortable with taking less than prescribed (never more).

I achieved my goal over 6 months ago at a max of 10mg. I'm currently maintaining at 5mg, after slowly working my way back down.

Ah , interesting. I did wonder if there might be a link between susceptibility to morning sickness (which I was extremely lucky and had none) and symptoms on MJ. Your experience would suggest not.

What is dumping syndrome - that sounds unpleasant!

I've just started taking MJ for the second time. First time around (when MJ was new to the market, so a couple of years ago), I had nausea on every dose. It was bearable on 2.5mg, slightly worse on 5mg and I was really ill for a few days, with vomiting and severe nausea, on 7.5mg, so bad that I could barely get out of bed .I was on 5mg for several months, so it wasn't that I went up too quickly. I dropped down to 5mg for a couple of weeks but still had severe nausea and occasional vomiting, so I stopped taking it.

At that time, microdosing, counting clicks and so on, weren't really known as possibilities. Nowadays so much more is known about both MJ and WG.

This time I started on 1.25mg (by counting clicks), stayed there for 3 weeks, then 2 weeks on 1.67mg, then to 2.5. I haven't had any nausea at all. I plan to stay on 2.5 for as it works at all, then only increase 0.5mg at a time, as needed. The food noise stopped instantly at 1.25mg and I've had good supression and lost 1kg, in the ten days since I've been on 2.5mg.

I'd suggest starting slowly and increasing gradually, since side effects tend to be worse as people go up the doses and that should reduce any side effects until you decide if it works for you.

ETA: dumping syndrome is an unpleasant side effect associated with weight loss surgery.

WhineAndWine1 · 04/03/2026 19:45

I haven’t had weight loss surgery but what I had was like dumping syndrome. I had vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea for two hours then low blood sugar symptoms but after the 2-3hrs I was fine. It happened day 3 after injection.

Oh that sounds like what Ive been recently experiencing on 15mg and 12.5mg, but without vomitting.

I dropped to 10mg the other week and it didn’t occur (although i was noticeably more hungry).

I’ve been on MJ for over a year and only for the last two months experienced this

@Twasasurprise when do you tend to get the diarrhoea? Is it predictable or totally random?

I think it's usually the morning after I've eaten something quite spicy. I can generally eat anything I like, just in very small portions. (I mostly eat the same as my family but have my dinner on a side plate or in a small bowl.)

Mind you, I had 2 small slices of pizza for dinner yesterday with chillies and pepperoni, but no diarrhoea today. It was Day 2 after my shot too, which is usually peak medication level where people tend to be most affected.

For me, I've had diarrhoea perhaps 1-3 times a month, but eat spicy foods several times a week.

Thistleton · 10/03/2026 19:43

I totally understand @Junmaro . I suffer from a crippling fear of vomiting and I spent over a year reading endless threads and dithering because I really wanted to start on Mounjaro but was terrified.

In the end I decided to risk it but started on an incredibly tiny dose - 0.8mg - then built up very slowly. I also decided to inject half a dose twice a week (several months later I’m still doing this). And I was very careful in the early days about what I ate.

I have been lucky in that I have had very few side effects, and I suspect part of that is about the very slow increase. I stocked up on all the recommended remedies to help manage my anxiety but have mostly managed without them.

I’d say go for it, I’m so glad I did. I’m now at a healthy weight and love the feeling of freedom that MJ has given me.
