Lost 3 stone - still in size 20 clothes

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 20/02/2026 09:59

Posted about this before. I am now 12, 6 at 5 foot 4. Was a size 20 at 15, 7

I'm still wearing my size 20 skinny jeans. Ok they are not skinny fit now, more MC Hammer.

When will need smaller sizes? Do I need to loose another stone? This was my goal weight for me

When you were a size 20 you were probably really a 22-24. I know I was - elastic waists, stretchy fabrics, and ‘relaxed’ fit clothes go a long way to helping us massage the numbers. At a similar height and weight I’ve only just been able to get into a pair of ‘rigid’ size 20 jeans and a size 16 jacket. It has taken me about a year. Someone once described it as using a role of toilet paper - you don’t notice when the outer layers come off but it starts to become more noticeable as it shrinks. Also clothes sizing isn’t linear - it may take 2 stone to drop a dress size from a 20 to an 18, but it may only take half a stone to drop from a size 10 to a size 8.

I am not sure about that, at her starting weight and her height, I’d say she probably was a 20. I’d be very surprised if she was bigger.

I think the issue is actually she seems incredibly reticent to go and try on clothes and just keeps wearing her old stuff. It’s hard to understand why, as she has started threads on it before, said she would and clearly hasn’t.

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 22/02/2026 09:55

I have been to next since the last thread. I could get into size 16 but the 20 felt comfortable too. The 16 was really too tight.

I paused the injections over Christmas so I could eat, lost more weight. People are saying im looking a lot slimmer but I'm not feeling it.

Got to pick a jumper I order up today so will try things on again while I'm there. Would be amazing if I was now a 16. Years ago I was a size 14 at my current weight. I think that's another thing. I was hoping to stop at my upper bmi but it seems that won't be enough

Your shape changes over time also though. I remember when I put on loads of weight when I was pregnant, I lost over 30lb and was a small size but nothing looked great (I was 8st11) as my tummy was wobbly and not flat. Prior to pregnancy I was heavier than that but looked much more toned so clothes looked better.

Years later I always stuck around 9stone but didnt have a toned stomach really, I then did high intensity boot camp for a few years, I weighed more (about 9.5st) but was a size smaller as my shape changed.

Currently I am a low weight but havent been exercising due to a number of reasons and my waist size is bigger than it should be, size 10-12 skinny jeans fit nicely round the waist but the legs are baggy, same with leggings. I need to start lifting weights again.

The short version is that it depends where you carry your weight really, its harder to buy stuff that fits if your waist is bigger comparably to the rest of you.

At 12.6 at 5.4 I’m a size 12 op, so there is no way you’re a 20 or whatever unless you’re managing to blow yourself up like a balloon 😁 What I will say is clothes in different shops fit differently on different bodies at the same size. I do better in h and m or primark for a 12 than I do in m and s and next clothes have never fitted me right. So really you need to go shopping at a few different shops and work out where does clothes that fit your new body. It’s a fantastic loss for your health and wellbeing well done!

Ok so you prob are a 16, yes bigger clothes can feel comfy and you’ve lost weight since then,

this really just seems about a reticence to buy new clothes.

I’m 5ft8 - SW was 14st7 & was wearing size 18

CW is 11st11 - only just wearing size 16
ot greatly depends on your hight, your build and boob size!

Don’t judge yourself on a dress size op.
Are you in the healthy bmi range for your height, sex, ethnicity?

Are you earning a healthy diet and exercising? Then it’s all good 🙌

XiCi · 22/02/2026 10:17

For the love of God OP buy some new clothes. Your going to look fucking awful in jeans that are a few sizes too big. Even from a fashion perspective noone has worn skinny jeans for getting on for a decade now. Maybe a John Lewis personal shopper would help find you flattering clothes for your new shape. They're really good

Buy an 18?

Branleuse · 22/02/2026 10:32

I'd go out and try on some new jeans op. You're probably closer to a size 14

I think this, there is clearly a back story here in the ops reticence in dress size. Everyone else just cracks on and gets new clothes, maybe waiting a bit. But the op must look awful now in clothes two or three sizes too big,

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 22/02/2026 10:49

I was still wearing most of my size 20 clothes after a five stone loss. It wasn’t until I went in to try stuff on and realised I am now a 16. I even bought size 14 jeans in new look the other day. Still sometimes wearing my size 20 skinny’s though!

ForPinkDuck · 22/02/2026 11:00

Do you have a problem spending money on yourself. I know i do.
I bought some high waisted dark wash bootcut jeans from next either 30 or 32 pounds. Sorry cant send you the link as the shop assistant ordered for me.
Chucked out 3 old pairs. I feel so much better.

My heaviest weight at 5ft 4 was 12st5, I was a 14 minimum, I could squeeze into big size 12 bottoms if I wore a baggy top to cover them. I think it really is a shape thing as it find M&S and Next come up big for me.

I dont think the OP is a 20 as she is describing that the clothes are baggy but dont fall down but I would say a 12 at 12st6 at 5ft4 is more unusual.

This. Just go on vinted if you don’t want to spend money on new. You are a size 14.

Brightlittlecanary · 22/02/2026 11:34

When the op last tried someone on she likely had an 18 waist and 16 legs/backside, and has lost further weight. Shes clearly not a 20, and if her skinny jeans are now loose I’m sure she must know this,

so why the reticence to buy clothes and jist keep complaining. I don’t get it at all, for most of us the change in appearance is a huge bonus, going down the dress sizes, and no one looks good in clothes two or 3 sizes too big.

Comedycook · 22/02/2026 11:49

Were you actually a size 20 op? I say this because I used to say I was a size 16 at my heaviest but looking back I was at least a size 18 and had just been choosing very stretchy clothes!

Notellinganyone · 22/02/2026 11:52

I’m 5ft 2 and just started WLI. My starting weight was 12 stone 6 and I am a 16/18 ish. Have you tried in new clothes in a shop?

SomethingFun · 22/02/2026 12:01

If it’s any consolation to the posters who seem to think I’m a weirdo for being a size 12 at the same weight/ height as op, I’m also a size 12 now at 10.13, though I’m definitely smaller, just not a whole dress size smaller. It all depends where your body carries the weight I suspect and it wasn’t meant to be a judgement on anyone else who is a different size to me at the same weight. I was trying to point out to op that I can’t see how it’s possible to be that height and weight and genuinely be a size 20.

I e had to read the posts twice and I cannot see any poster, never mind plural who have accused you of being a weirdo or even intimated they think it.

Yes,was going to say that if money is the issue you can get some great bargains on Vinted and you can then sell them on if you drop any further sizes

PuzzledObserver · 22/02/2026 15:18

Go and try on some smaller clothes. Doesn’t mean you have to buy.

After losing 3 stone, I would have gone down 2 sizes, maybe even 3 (depending how tight the original size were on me before).

Where are those size 20 jeans from? Go to that shop, and try on skinny jeans in 18, 16 and 14. See how you look and feel in each of them.

I can also understand you not wanting to spend a lot on clothes if you expect to lose more. That’s what charity shops are for. Go and try on some jeans there, in various sizes.

Whizzgosh · 22/02/2026 15:33

You really do need to go shopping and try some things on, not just different sizes but different styles and fits too. I understand not wanting to go all out on a whole new wardrobe when you’re not at your goal yet but you can buy the occasional thing which will make you feel like you’re making progress and look better too.
I noticed clothes seemed to get longer before they looked too big width wise because they were hanging loose rather than riding up.

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 22/02/2026 19:10

It's not the money. I have just come into a small windfall and currently looking for the perfect Mulberry Bayswater. I do procrastinate with that but it's a big purchase and I want the perfect colour. Also I'm.enjoying going into Selfridges to much and looking at them.

I just can not accept I have lost the weight. It's been very slow to come off for me. Everyone else losses a stone in a month on WLI it seems. Loosing a pound a week it's harder to feel it's a reasonable weight loss.

I got my fat arse into a size 14 and did them up but I'm definitely not a size 14. Realistically I think I'm a size 18 borderline 16. I must have lost 3 stone off my chin!

I was looking at the size 14 and thinking the waist was size of one of my thighs. My brain is unwilling to catch up now so I just bought skinny fit 16 as they are stretchy. I can not wrap my head around looking at a 14 on the hanger and them doing up on me.
