Is this still safe to use?

I had been taking mounjaro for 5 months before Christmas and was up to 10. I took a dose at the end off October but ended up getting ill (not MJ related) and didn't take a dose for a few weeks, then figured if have to go back to a starting dose so put it off until I was back on my feet. I went to clear my fridge yesterday and realised I still had 3 x 10 doses left in the pen. Is it safe to use for some starting doses? It's been in the fridge since October.

It's well past the 30 day usage guidance for a pen once it's been used. Not just a few days or even weeks, but months. If the liquid is cloudy or has particles in then absolutely don't use it. Even if it's clear, it could be degraded and be ineffective and potentially cause irritation or other issues.

I personally wouldn't use it.

It still looks perfect, that's why I was wondering. I heard stories from people on other countries who have been prescribed a 10 pen for a few months if 2.5 doses. I'm not sure though.

I have used MJ well beyond the 30 days and it’s been fine.

PluckyChancer · 02/02/2026 13:40

No, that’s too long.

I eat slightly out of date food and micro dose my MJ so I’m not risk averse at all but I think as your pen has been open for about 5 months now, I definitely wouldn’t risk it.

Catontheradiator · 02/02/2026 14:48

I would if it looks clear and has been refrigerated and not frozen but only you can decide what you are going to do.

TheSlimmingPumpkin · 02/02/2026 14:54

I am not risk adverse but I think I would draw the line at using a pen that has already been used 5 months ago. So I guess you are proposing to use it for your next 3 jabs? So potentially for your last jab that pen will have been in use 180 days. That’s outside my risk envelope. I thought I was being rebellious once making a pen last 42 days.

I'm fairly laid back about using mj but I don't think I'd use a pen that's been open for months. That's more than 3 months. I'd definitly go over the 30 days but maybe not that far.
Having said that, people who microdose must be using the pen for quite a while after the 30 days. It's only 30 days because thats what E Lilly tested, they didn't actually test if it was ok for longer.
There are 2 risks, it might not work as well and contamination. Personally, I don't think it stops being effective that quickly but I'm not really sure about the possibility of microbe growth. But it is in a preservative and I have other stuff in my fridge for much longer which is in preservative which hasn't gone off in months.

RoundandSad · 02/02/2026 16:55

Watching with interest as I might microdose from a 5mg one - mostly because I cannot bear to throw it in the bin. It's not open. I was supposed to use it last night, but I actually couldn't face it.

But your pen was opened in October
So that's been November, December, January.

What does your provider say?

WeAllHaveWings · 02/02/2026 18:55

I use beyond the 30 day in use period, but open since October would be far too long for me.

Same. Sorry. I use for about 10 weeks but I know I'm pushing it!

MJisitsafe · 02/02/2026 19:59

Fair enough, when you say 5 months that does seem a bit too long! It's just gutting to throw about £150 in the sharps bin.

I've gone 13 weeks and that is the limit for me I think. Clearly I'm not risk adverse but that just seems too long. I know how you must feel. I had to chuck with just one dose out and I was gutted at that.

kiwiane · 02/02/2026 20:12

If it’s clear then I’d use it; if it works then it’s still effective. It’s at your own risk but seeing as they can be used for a month and kept out of the fridge, I reckon you’ll be fine.

PearlTeapot · 02/02/2026 21:27

I feel you, it's such a lot of money. Chances are it'll have degraded and not be effective anyway.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 02/02/2026 21:30

I'd use it if it was still perfectly clear.

You'll soon know if it's still working!
