Balancing weight loss with injury rehab

I’ve managed to tear my meniscus, and after seven months of waiting I finally got a physio appointment. I’ve been given a pretty intense physio schedule with the goal of having me fit by the summer.

I know from previous surgery that being in a deficit can really harm recovery. But I also know that rehabbing a knee injury will be greatly helped by weight loss.

I’m currently on 0.5mg of wegovy. I’m aiming to eat around 1500 calories a day to lose about a pound a week. I’m just not sure if this will help my recovery? How do I balance this?

I have never heard that before (about being in a deficit). Surely losing weight would be better for recovery, without putting all that increased pressure on your knee. 1500 isn't a particularly low intake either.

A deficit puts more strain on your system so slows down healing, that’s what I was told after a surgery last year when I was told I needed to eat at maintenance at a minimum. Which is why im trying to balance weight loss (which is good for my knee) with rehab, because it’s already a tough area to heal

Could you aim for just a small deficit? Or just eat clean, healthy food with plenty of protein instead of counting and stressing? (I haven’t counted for eight months and am down four stones. Haven’t changed my exercise habits either).

I think I’m going to see how I go on 1500 and potentially increase depending on losses and how my knee feels. I got back to running last night and now it’s so incredibly painful. So it’s hard to balance.
