How Much Hair Loss?

GhostHQ · 18/01/2026 19:52

I read rapid weight-loss stress on the body/inadequate iron/protein levels caused by calorie deficits, rather than GPL-1s themselves, causes hair loss. I'm worried I'll end up with wispy strands on a shiny bald head.

What have been your experiences with hair loss? Did anyone go bald? 😳

Not bald, but a weight loss of over 10st left me with a 2" parting. In my case weight loss was to save my life, not to look pretty. Take your vitamins/minerals 🙂

I had some hair loss, after about 3 months. It stopped after around another 3 months and now my hair is back to normal. The shedding seemed a lot to me, in the shower and when brushing, but it wasn’t really noticeable to others. I’ve been on Mounjaro for 18 months plus now and just had that one episode at the start. Probably caused by the fairly quick losses I had at the start, which were not intentional.

ShrankLastWinter · 18/01/2026 20:05

Only noticeable to me. Like after pregnancy. And it grows back. But eat protein and make sure your vitamins and minerals are covered.

OneAlertOliveFinch · 18/01/2026 21:05

I lost copious amounts of hair at the 5 month mark. I must have lost around half of my hair. Luckily it was thick to begin with. I also started to get memory issues, but this is likely due to the rapid 20% body weight drop. A 4 month plateau fixed the issue and my hair is almost back to normal. Currently off mounjaro and on a normal 500 cal deficit and the hair loss has not returned.

Thank you for your replies! Sorry to hear you've experienced hair loss. My pen is in the fridge, but the worry about losing a lot of hair has put me into a sort of freeze and I'm too anxious to start. It is such a shame this is a side effect, for me at least, my hair has been the only thing I have ever liked about myself.

It is a symptom of drastic weight loss. If you take it for a couple months then have a break, or have a consistent but slow weight loss: you will be unlikely to get hair loss. It wasnt a gradually thing. It just all fell out in clumps suddenly.

Sweetiedarling7 · 19/01/2026 11:05

I have lost hair due to weight loss a few times. It grows back and you won’t go bald.
Actually I haven’t had hair loss this time I have lost weight, ie with mounjaro.
Crack on with starting your pen, you won’t regret it.

TheChosenTwo · 19/01/2026 11:08

I lost what felt like half my volume of hair. No noticeable gaps but it’s thinned considerably, drying and styling it takes minutes now whereas it used to take a good 20 minutes just to dry it properly. I had a lot of hair to begin with though.
I lost it heavily from 3 months in and I think it continued like that for about 9 months. It’s slowed down again now. No signs of regrowth as yet.

SilenceInside · 19/01/2026 11:12

You'd risk hair loss on any kind of weight loss programme. I've had the same kind of hair loss before just from stress.

Obviously for a lot of people, hair is an important part of their body image and something that would severely distress them if it became visibly thinner and bald in places. Only you can know if the risk of hair loss is sufficient to stop you from using WLI or losing weight via other means. For me, I had a very large amount of weight to lose, and losing hair was not something that would have stopped me.

MtKiloMounjaro · 19/01/2026 11:30

Ok I had this same worry and then it happened. I didn't lose a crazy amount super fast in the beginning but it was a steady 2lbs a week for a few months. After about 3-4 months of jabbing i noticed my hair shedding about 3-4x more than normal. I lost about 1/3 of my hair and my pony tail feels a lot thinner. Luckily i'm the only one who noticed. I had my blood checked about month 1 of hair loss and my iron was borderline/low but my protein was fine (i had upped my protein a lot the month before my blood test though). fast forward 3 3-4 months and the shedding has dramatically reduced! Phew! Had my bloods done again and my iron levels haven't increased.... this leads me to believe it's just the reaction to losing weight and being in a calorie deficit for so long and so consistently. Also, my nails were splitting so bad!

My advice is, take your vitamins, keep your protein high and try try try not to stress. It will stop if it sheds and it will grow back.

Does this mean you intend to do rapidly and not consume your macros? Can you not bring yourself to do it slowly and healthily?

WinterOnItsWayOut · 19/01/2026 17:17

I’ve had a small amount of loss but not noticeable. I have stayed on 2.5mg MJ throughout though and didn’t lose too much weight too quickly (although steadily) and 2.5 stone in total

I was going to suggest this. There’s so many hair pieces nowadays, you can wear one while it grows back. And you’ll be slim at the same time!

I absolutely love it!

I wouldn’t say I have lost weight quickly either, averaging 1.2lb per week and I have microdosed . It took me a year to reach 5mg.

Sunshin80 · 19/01/2026 18:46

I've been on mounjaro since June 2025. 6 months in i started with the hairloss on 5mg. I did lose quite quickly. However I upped my protein quite alot and made sure I was eating plenty and drinking plenty. Now on 7.5mg weightloss now evened out and its stopped now. Good skin hair and nail tablets I think helped too. It does stop eventually, well it certainly did for me. I was getting worried at one point. Shampoos and all the anti fall hair products did absolutely nothing for me. Just protein protein protein, plenty of water, steady weight loss and a good biotin

MrsMiagi · 19/01/2026 20:20

Its been quite distressing for me and i can't really enjoy my weight loss properly because my hair is so thin now. I didn't realise it was a possible side effect (i have lost weight before and at a faster pace but my hair has never suffered) and I probably would have hesitated to start mounjaro if I knew right from the start. However, whats done is done and I now have lots of extensions added to hide the issue.
I also don't have prediabetes or high cholesterol anymore so i focus on that.

PurpleCoo · 19/01/2026 20:49

Just don't lose weight too rapidly, eat plenty of protein and nutritious food and it should keep the hair loss to a minimum.

I followed the above rules and I have lost more hair than typical, but it's not noticeable to anyone else. It just means I have had wispier ends, so had to have 3-4 inches off, taking me from a couple of inches below my bra strap to a out an inch above, but my hair now looks thick, shiny, healthy and full of body. I am of course disappointed to have hair a lot shorter than I want it, but in the grand scheme of things, several inches of hair off isn't the end of the world.

FourteenStoneInAday · 20/01/2026 22:02

Along with a good multi vitamin and protein intake, you could try some anti-hair fall shampoos and serums to try and mitigate any hair loss. Pantene have a new 'growth abundant' hair loss range - might be worth trying those or there's a loreal range with argenine to prevent shedding and keep the hair in the growth phase.

ShawnaMacallister · 20/01/2026 22:06

No hair loss, I have lush hair. I never lost weight very fast, 1lb a week at the most, and I have cracking muscle definition as well as the lush hair. Slow and steady is the way!

GhostHQ · 25/01/2026 11:32

Thank you for sharing your experiences! I had heard sometimes slow weight loss isn't possible at the start for those suffering more severe side-effects, which have led to not being able to eat much in the first month. I also see hair loss has happened with slow weight losses too. Seems unavoidable if it is destined. I hope those who have lost hair see lots of thick and healthy re-growth over the following months. I start my journey tomorrow, as slow and steady as possible, with a great nutrition plan and excellent vitamins. Hopefully, if I end up bald, at least I'll be slimmer!

Hi over 60 and hair noticeably thinner particularly at front and drier. Need to lose for medical reasons as need both knees replaced but BMI too high. Would be grateful for any suggestions re diet, supplements, product or even styling ( what do people think about say a perm). I take multi vitamins, collagen, turmeric and a supplement to slow macular degeneration. Probably need to up protein as with constipation prioritised other foods. Any advice or websites, books etc gratefully received. Hope someone still on this thread.

DareDevil223 · 30/01/2026 17:10

I've lost over nine stone on Wegovy and then Mounjaro. I have had absolutely no hair loss at all. It's not inevitable. I do have really thick strong hair but I'm also post menopausal.

I lost my weight over two years and prioritised protein but other than that I didn't do anything special.
