Mounjaro with IBD

MalleyOMalley · 14/01/2026 22:44

Has anyone been prescribed Mounjaro when they’ve disclosed IBD? For example, with a doctors letter saying it’s okay, or something like that? My gastro consultant is happy for me to take it, and he knows my medical history better than anyone.

Yes! My GI consultant said that several of his patients are on it and he, too, was happy for me to go on it. And interested to see if it helped my UC. That’s partly why I’m now taking it. I got my 2.5mg starter dose from Asda online doctor and there was no problem when I said I had IBD. I’m hoping to move to Bolt or another, less expensive supplier for the 5mg pen. I’ve only been on it 11 days but, so far, my IBD and other inflammatory conditions are all nice and quiet. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this helped IBD sufferers. Good luck!

I have immune related colitis and mounjaro has really helped my rapid transit of food. Also know somebody with IBS on mounjaro who tells it is much improved too.
No issues with being prescribed.
The slowed gastric emptying is a major effect of mounjaro and is exactly what I needed.

MalleyOMalley · 15/01/2026 08:54

Thanks @Sweetiedarling7and @Toolea. So when you disclosed IBD they didn’t ask for anything additional? I’ve been on Mounjaro for a while and it has really helped with my gut issues, however I’m now having problems with the prescriber. I cleared it with my hospital consultant before starting but didn’t disclose it to the prescriber. @Sweetiedarling7do you mind sharing who your prescriber is?

I will be beyond gutted if I can’t continue taking Mounjaro 😞

I was with Asda too. No additional questions asked about my ulcerative colitis. I lost a stone while on 2.5mg but then plateaued before starting on the 5mg (i have 2 x 5mg pens) I have had to come off it for a little while as I am due for routine colonoscopy - which has unfortunately ended up being a longer break due to it being cancelled and rescheduled, so will have to retart at 2.5mg. I was going to reorder with Asda but it was so expensive at the higher doses I am going to look around so would also be interested to hear of any other providers.

Sweetiedarling7 · 15/01/2026 09:24

@MalleyOMalley I have used a few different suppliers
IQ Doctor
Curely
Pharmacy2U
Pillsorted

I haven't disclosed my IBD to my supplier, so can't help with your question.
But just want to say to you - taking MJ has literally changed my life with regard to my IBD symptoms. Honestly.
Gone from having bowels open 5 times a day with diarrhoea, which would see me sitting on the toilet for over half an hour each time and would make me late for school run, late for work, late for appointments, late to meet friends, plus the soreness and distress of leaking brown fluid inbetween going to the toilet (sorry), to all of this completely stopping and I now have my bowels open once a day only and it's not diarrhoea anymore.
So I hope it sees an improvement for your symptoms too.
My worry now is about stopping MJ once I reach my weight goal, as I can't finance it at these increased prices after the recent market cost skyrocketing.

I did find people with an ibd felt this helped them which I was heartened to hear.
I dont have ibd but have a pouch which I didnt disclose , I read up and didny feel it would impact negatively but did wonder about effectiveness but shouldn't have .

I was expecting them to ask more questions but there was nothing. I’m wondering if I should bother even disclosing when I change providers. I wonder though if there’s a legal reason it might be best to disclose?

MalleyOMalley · 15/01/2026 22:41

Thanks all. My prescriber has confirmed they won’t prescribe me any more Mounjaro. Am gutted - not only does my gastro consultant and GP support me taking it, but it’s actually helped with my symptoms! They said there would be no flexibility on that whatsoever.

I’ll approach a new provider and hope for the best 😕🤞

@Avaximitisyes I’ve had massive improvements too.
Did you give your provider permission to contact your GP etc?

Yes I did, and I provided my GP details. But my GP has never mentioned it in the 2 years I've been taking MJ.
So I don't mention it either.
What improvements have you had? Glad to hear it BTW. Do you think it will be listed in the future as a treatment for IBD?

Like you, it has slowed things down, and I have far less diarrhoea. Also I had a huge problem with excessive gas - quite difficult to live with as it’s so embarrassing - which has mostly disappeared.

I have been for my colonoscopy today.... after almost 30 years of really debilitating ulcerative colitis my colon was said to be looking really healthy. I am wondering whether this is (at least in part) the MJ effect ..... but I will certainly be discussing with my consultant next week!

How wonderful to hear! Please report back what your consultant says! 😀

Alilacat · 16/01/2026 20:44

i have ulcerative colitis and my prescriber was happy for me to proceed, but wanted some evidence that my hospital consultant was happy (which they were). If you can get a letter or email from your consultant, that might help? My prescriber is Juniper btw.

Alilacat · 16/01/2026 20:46

My IBD was quiescent before I started, but I feel better than ever on mounjaro since starting 😁

I'm sorry to hear this, which prescriber denied you? It might be helpful for others to know who not to approach.

I've not disclosed UC to my prescribers or the MJ to my GP (who I've never seen since moving here 6 years ago).

I've been on MJ for about 18 months and am in maintenance after losing 7.5 stone. I have a stockpile to last about another year, so not urgently looking for a new supplier, but order 5mg sporadically to keep evidence of a recent prescription. (Pharmulous were my favoured pharmacy, but they now insist on GP details, so I've not ordered recently.)

I'd been in remission for a few years before starting MJ and have virtually stopped my mesalazine since starting MJ. No symptoms of UC at all.

OpheliaNightingale · 16/01/2026 21:30

@Avaximitis do you mind me asking..is it ulcerative colitis you have? My teen son has it, but his weight is low end of healthy, so not sure he could take weight loss injections x

I have had IBD for 36 years with barely a good day . I’ve been taking MJ for 7 months now have lost 3.5 stone but since the very first day I have had 1 normal healthy bm a day . Never in my life have I had this. I feel I will need it for life but it’s worth it just for that side effect alone . I never disclosed to any of the very many pharmacies I’ve used and I think k my doctors seem to just click yes everytime . With some pharmacies the doctor details are optional I’ve had a couple over ticked no to doctors being informed and I just had to click something to say I was fully responsible for that choice . I can’t remember which ones they were . Good luck OP

I have IBD and tried quite a few pharmacies before being accepted by Numan for Mounjaro ( about 10 months ago).It worked well but I am in limbo now as they seem to have taken me off their list and are asking me to start again with photos etc so I am cutting down with my remaining 1 1/2 pens and hoping for the best ( I am happy with a normal weight BMI 22 but had expected to wean off slowly).I have had a bit of a relapse IBD wise this year … not terrible but symptomatic and on increased treatment. I am not sure if it is related to the mounjaro or is a coincidence.
