Anyone quit mounjaro due to side effects and then restarted it?

I used Mounjaro around 18 months ago. I experienced a bit of nausea on 2.5 mg but when I went up to 5 mg I experienced vomiting every morning. It was awful as (TMI warning) I would vomit up last night's dinner completely undigested. I then went back down to 2.5 mg but the nausea put me off so I quit it after a week.

Like I said it's been 18 months and I still find when I smell alcohol wipes (which I used to use before injecting mounjaro) I feel like I'm going to vomit.

I've been unable to lose weight in a sustainable way, so I'm thinking of giving Mounjaro another go but staying on the 2.5 mg dose for several months, maybe even indefinitely.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

I’ve not been on this, but your body is rejecting it. I would seek medical advice before starting again

SilenceInside · 02/01/2026 22:07

Her body wasn’t rejecting it. It’s a known side effect, the OP was unlucky to experience so early on and quite severe.

@driftingg you could also try partial dosing, so starting on 1.25mg from a 2.5mg pen rather than doing the full dose to begin with.

I have no medical experience whatsoever and no personal experience of Mountjaro but something a colleague told me was that it’s the most effective when you first take it. According to them, if you take it, and then stop, it won’t be as effective second time around. How true this is for everyone I have no idea but my colleague said this is a little publicised characteristic of the drug?

Hiddlestom · 02/01/2026 22:42

Ditto - took it a year ago, was horrifically unwell on 2.5 (vomiting multiple times a day, constant diarrhoea), stopped after 6 weeks. Lost 1.5stone in 6 weeks. Obviously it all went back on after!

Went back on it in Nov, started microdosing my first pen. Started at 0.6mg, and after 8 weeks I’m now up to 2.5 (which still made me vomit once!!). But I’ve lost 11lb, so much much more gradual, and barely any side effects. Maybe try a lower dose than 2.5!

TheGoodEnoughWife · 02/01/2026 22:47

How much were you eating? The only time I feel nauseous on it is seen I have eaten a little too much. In my opinion when I read/see people having lots of side affects it is because they are eating ‘past’ the medication.

Mysticmaiden · 02/01/2026 23:25

If you are that ill on mounjaro, consider wegovy. Zero side effects for me amd I lost the last 3lbs on my first pen. Bmi 22.7 now, moved from 10mg to 1.7mg.

RoundandSad · 03/01/2026 00:16

Oh my God, I'm thinking of stopping and I didn't have anything as bad as that!

I was meant to take it today and I didn't

Debating doing a microdose next week.

Were you alrighton 2.5 when you restarted?

scary stuff, isn't it? It's been such a nice day knowing I wouldn't take it

@Hiddlestom reading your post I might try 1.25

user1471530109 · 03/01/2026 00:30

OP, I had horrendous side effects back at Easter. I was fine for 3 weeks on 2.5mg then just couldn't stop throwing up and chronic diarrhea. It lasted weeks 🫣. I tried a break then took 2.5mg but instantly I was unwell again.

Left it months until the summer until I was off work for 6 weeks. I started v v slowly. 1mg to start. Now, 5 months later, 25lbs lighter, still only on 3mg. Losing v v v slowly. But I kind of like that as it feels natural and no one has turned round and said 'wli??' as it has been so slow.

No side effects.

Thanks everyone. Do you microdose by counting clicks or is it something that can be prescribed?

I was thinking of trying Wegovy but I've heard the side effects can be worse than Mounjaro?

Ugh I had similar. I’d be in bed for 3 days after injecting 5mg. Even opening the fridge the pen was stored in (utility)after I’d stopped MJ would give me a wave of nausea.

Thesofathatwas · 04/01/2026 12:30

I’ve powered through as I’ve found that the intense nausea and headaches last for around 3 days for the first 2 injections then goes away with the next injections.
Unfortunately it’s very strong when I move up a dose.

The nausea reminds me of morning sickness, it’s very distinct and very unlike the nausea symptoms you get with food poisoning for example.
Im 4 days on from my last injection and still feeling somewhat sick.
But less so.

I powered through because I am absolutely desperate to get this bastard fat weight shifted. Everything, absolutely every single thing I have ever tried in the last 7 years has failed. I cannot stop and will put up with anything to make sure this works.

You count clicks. So for instance 2.5mg is usually 60 clicks and to go down to 1.25mg it's 30 clicks. Here's a really good chart which calculates it for you:
