Mounjaro 10mg bc pen jammed - can I take fewer clicks of a 12mg pen instead?

Hello, I have just opened a new 10mg mounjaro pen (first dose at 10mg) and found that the pen has jammed - I can’t get it to dispense at all

I have a 12.5mg in the fridge which I got early as didn’t want to have to think about it during the Christmas madness.

Can I use fewer clicks of the 12.5mg pen to get a 10mg dose? If so please could someone help me to work out how many clicks?

Have you tried a different needle? What happened when you primed? I sometimes find with a new pen it takes 2 or 3 primes to get the liquid moving.

If the pen really is buggered I'd be getting a refund from your provider.

But yes, you can get 10mg from a 12mg pen. It would be 48 clicks.

(60 divided by 12.5 to get how many clicks for 1mg, then multiplied by 10)

Buy medical grade syringes, or pick up from a local chemist, and use your opened 10mg pen to extract the dose each time. Then you don't waste the pen.

Another coming on to ask if you’ve tried anther needle

Don’t break the seal on another pen when you can easily get the doses out of the old one. Like others have said do try at least 3 pen needles - it will feel jammed if the needle is blocked. If it’s not that and is the pen mechanism you can pursue a replacement but everything I’ve read suggests that can be a massive hassle with many suppliers. I’d just buy a pack of needles from UK medi - this is the type you need https://ukmedi.co.uk/products/fms-micro-syringe-32g-8mm-1ml-fms-fms-32g-10ml-ukmedi-co-uk. If you need to take the dose asap you can buy at a pharmacy - ask for insulin needles. You want 60units/0.6ml and it’s incredibly easy to do.

I'd try a different needle. I've had a few jam on me. It doesn't happen that often but I actually had a batch of bad needles and none of them worked (tried 4). Opened a new pack and it was fine.

Don't open a new pen. Try a few different needles. I had a run of 3 dud needles once. And also a new pen that took a few goes to get the first to prime.. 2 clicks nothing 2 more nothing, 3 clicks finally a drop.

If its straight put the fridge it can be a little stiff.. try everything first before starting a new pen.

Frenchfrychic · 07/12/2025 13:28

Generally when that happens it’s the needle, it’s one of the reasons you prime, just try a different one. It also may not be quite on right.

mustytrusty · 07/12/2025 15:11

Thank you every one. I didn’t even consider that it might be the needle. I’ll check. I also didn’t even think about syringing. Thanks so much.

It wasn’t the needle, sadly. The red centre point of the pen is bulging out so I can even see where I’d put a needle to draw out the liquid. I’m hoping the supplier will replace it but I don’t hold out much hope.

They will probably try to say it was user error, if you don't follow the instructions in the leaflet to change the pen needle if it doesn't prime properly. Continuing to try to use the pen can result in the red seal bulging as too much pressure is then put on it due to the needle being blocked.

mustytrusty · 08/12/2025 11:41

@SilenceInsideyes, I’m sure they’ll say it’s my fault but I’m not sure that it was. I’ve done enough pens over the last few months to be confident that I am doing it properly. I suppose I’ll just end up out of pocket.

You can probably still draw out the liquid via the red seal, even if it's bulging, as long as the seal doesn't burst completely.

Did the pen prime correctly, and then jam?

mustytrusty · 08/12/2025 13:41

Yes it let out a tiny bit when I primed it and turned absolutely fine, but then wouldn’t press down at all. Good to know that I might be able to still use it if I’m very careful!

Sometimes you need to prime two or three times.

mustytrusty · 08/12/2025 15:17

They have come back and said it’s my fault, as expected. It’s impossible to be able to prove anything virtually.

I have been using Mounjaro pens for just over a year and during that time it has jammed (usually during the last dose) several times. I clearly use the pen correctly, as evidenced by many successful uses during the year, but when it jams....it jams. I have followed the various specific guidance on resolving the issue and it never works. My partner has just started using Mounjaro and the very first pen jammed on the last dose today! This is not a coincidence and I can only assume that this is a recognised expensive defect which needs to be addressed.
