Anyone else stopping due to how aging losing weight is?!

I just wanted to see where everyone is drawing a line on taking wli (unless maintaining) as I have recently stopped after losing 2 stone.

I originally stopped in October last year at a bmi of 24.5 but then restarted in March as I had put on 2kgs, I feel in hindsight this was irrational.

I am now at a bmi of 24 and stopped a month ago as I felt it was really starting to age me. I’m now happy being between 24-25.5 and a size 12.

All the collagen in the world won’t prevent the loss of volume in the face that is associated with wli, and I look at photos 3 years ago and think how much better I looked with more padding in the face.

I just wondered how people are balancing losing weight and being at a lower bmi against the effect that it has on how you look? It’s been quite alarming in my case, and I don’t want to go down the route of fillers/ Botox but it’s that age old thing of solving one problem but creating another!

Great post. (apart from the Skechers bit, I love my Skechers😄).

Sorry, I have a pair too, but they are not youthful,,not on me anyway,,but sometimes needs must 😝

Disturbia81 · 28/10/2025 20:09

You will always look better slimmer as you can wear better clothes, jeans with belts and tucked in tops etc, hair will look healthier and sit better without all the fat, your facial features pop out, why does it matter if there are a few more wrinkles.
But guess that’s why celebs lose the weight then get fillers

I would bet that muscle tone is the main difference between the women on here who feel good at healthy BMI and the women who don't feel they can go that low.

Because it's muscle gives a nice shape, so if you don't have much you're going to look and feel off without it, and probably want to keep more fat on to compensate.

I can't recommend weight training enough for anyone losing weight but especially 40+. It's a game changer.

I'm 53, have lost 22kg down to BMI of 24, still going on WLI alongside heavy weights at the gym. I've got a flat tummy, round bum, pretty much an ideal hourglass shape TBH, I feel very youthful.

I think you’re probably onto something. I have muscle definition and tone, my bmi is 20, and importantly my stomach is now flat, with a visible ring of muscle . At a bigger bmi my stomach is flabbier, my boobs bigger, the muscle hidden, howver I have a very narrow frame, my shoulders and hips, my rib cage are all very narrow, I think I look like I should now. I’m also quite tall at 5ft 7.

however I have a friend who has the same bmi, she’s slightly taller, but a very broad frame, wide shoulders, hips and rib cage, with no muscle definition, no tone, and she just looks very thin, she would look better if she gained weight in my opinion, and her face is quite aged. She never works out,

so I do think you’re probably right, the muscle definition and tone is key. If you don’t have it, then it’s better to be a little heavier, but if you have it, then look better at a lower BMI.

Actually, I do weight train, go the gym and swim.

But I’m not sure how that will make a difference to my face?

It’s great having the body of baywatch, but if you’ve got the face of crime watch to go with it, all the weight training in the world ain’t gonna help that 😂

That’s also valid, I think maybe genetics also play a part, or lifestyle before, and sometimes you can jist be unlucky really.

@Hedgehogtimeagain I agree we’re sold this idea that smaller is always better but now that I’m in my 50’s, I’m noticing that it’s not always the most flattering in my age group. I have a couple of friends who are extremely fit with barely any fat on them (I’m guessing bmi’s of 18/19) and they’re the most lined in our friendship group tbh.

Being slim as you get older is definitely flattering, but not thin.

Edited

It’s the hollowing of the face for me, with the general downwards pull of the face.

For me personally, I’d rather stay a size 12 now and keep some semblance of volume in my face.

Thats just a personal opinion but it’s definitely helping me be rational now I’ve stopped MJ! I don’t want to lose any more weight, just maintain so seeing the scales stay the same is just fine by me

The one truth I can absolutely agree with is that you can save your arse or your face, not both 😂

That’s great, lucky you! Do you mind me asking your age, I am 44 so not sure if that’s something to do with it.

I have had two separate people that didn’t know me 3 years ago, say they wouldn’t have recognised me in a photo - and I don’t think they mean it in a good way 😂

Ive lost my double chin but also lost volume in the cheek area so it maybe looks a bit more saggy now.
Ive absolutely loved fitting into smaller clothes and not dreading not being able to find something to wear, but for me a happy medium is a slightly higher bmi but still in the healthy range.

Ive lost 10 stone and 15 years. Definitely look much younger. Passport facial recognition and my windows hello dont recognise me. I think it must be different for different people

Try maintenance for longer- the fat redistributes I think. I always end up with flat empty bust when I lose weight, but over time it seems to refill a bit. It’s an issue for me as I’m pear shaped. Losing weight exaggerates it!

So don’t panic too soon. And don’t feel obliged to get to a specific BMI. Depending on your frame, you will suit a different weight. Fine boned, tiny framed people need to be at the lower end of the BMI. Broad framed people need to be nearer the top.

I suspect that that happens no matter how you lose the weight.

I lost more than 30lbs via a calorie deficit and exercise and my bust flattened out, but since seems to have recovered. (I still need to lost the same again. My BMI is currently 29.2.)

I think that sounds the right decision for you, it’s unfortunate it happened to you snd think it does happen to some, but as long as you’re happy with your face and weight, that’s all that matters. I’d have done the same had it happened to me.

I have lost 20 kg so far and still have more to go.

At the moment I look younger not older, however, still have bmi of 27 so going to try to keep going to bmi under 25. Would love to be a size 12-14.

I am weight training 3 times a week and hope that if I maintain for long enough much of the saggy skin will reduce.

I'm having to choose between my face and my feet. I'm afraid that my feet will have to win. Maybe if I puff out my cheeks while I'm walking...

Yes, I stopped at bmi 26 just as my face started to try and fall off. Can't afford a facelift so hitting the gym instead . Skinny when middle aged just looks like a scrawny chicken. Not a good look.

Tubby in middle age can look matronly. It depends on your build and facial structure. I look miles younger when I’m smaller. As soon as I have any excess I just look dumpy and matronly. Definitely older.

Disturbia81 · 28/10/2025 21:07

Weight training definitely helps with the face, muscles on the face add scaffolding and firmness.

Zempy · 28/10/2025 21:08

I also look much younger now. I have lost five stone this year and my BMI is now 20.6.

I am sixty.

You probably care about and focus on your face, and its perceived imperfections, more than others do.

Others will be looking more at the 'whole package' and I would argue that a youthful figure and hair will have you perceived as looking younger despite what your face looks like.

(And I'm sure your face is lovely, you're just still getting used to it! Smile)

That's probably what I should lose in total, but I'll be satisfied if I can lose another 30lbs, getting me down by just over 4 stones. I'm 65.

I'm pleased that I got rid of the excess from my bust - it was most definitely matronly and it looks a lot better and is definitely more comfortable now. I was a UK size 20/22 before, with the waist being the biggest problem. My waistline is down, but still a size 20; the rest is currently an 18.

I agree with this, people tend to look at the overall package, rather than your face in isolation. However some people are just unlucky and due to a variety of factors age badly facially , so they need fat to try to pad them out and hide it. However it could also be they are just not used to seeing their face slim and hyper focused on any perceived imperfections, No way to tell as we can’t see pics.

i would say though its a minority who look older, a small minority , you can see it on all the before and afters on line, or people you know on the meds, universally they do look younger, much younger, as being fat is very ageing in itself.
