High ALT in blood test after 8 months on MJ

Evening all. Been on MJ for 8 months and done 1 week of Wegovy. Had lots of nausea and some reflux but manageable with omeprazole (which I had as on loads of painkillers for pain at same time as taking MJ). I’m in a bit of a tizzy went to GP after a night of really much worse reflux type gnawing pain and tenderness in upper abdomen. I couldn’t sleep at all as couldn’t lie down. Nothing worked. I took double dose of omeprazole next morning as I had been told previously this was ok - don’t take this advice from me though. I can’t remember who told me and was desperate.
GP recommended a higher dose of a PPI, said my meds may have caused it plus stress in my life (lots of life changes currently including house move and possible separation ). I’ve had bloods and my ALT is really elevated.
im waiting on a GP appointment next week as this is my reading my own results on NHS app but wondered if anyone had similar ? Bloods 6 months ago were all normal.

It’s more likely to be the omeprazole op, as it’s known to damage liver, where as mounjaro is being trialled to cure liver disease.

Wildgoat · 24/10/2025 21:30

Also did your doctor not explain to you about omeprazole?

alisonb123 · 24/10/2025 21:58

My Alt was raised due to gallstones. Think MJ increases the risk of developing them. Ask GP for a scan.

Lougle · 24/10/2025 22:07

DD2 has recently been taken off omeprazole after raised ALT.

Liverlybunchofcoconuts · 24/10/2025 22:32

What what? Omeprazole can affect liver? I didn’t even think that this would be a possibility as it’s prescribed to resolve gastric type issues. Wow. I’ll ask

Mounjaro doesn’t raise the risk of gallstones, it is weight gain or rapid loss that does that,

op, yes omeprazole is a really really hard drug on the system, it is one which shouldn’t be taken lightly and if your doctor didn’t explain that they are remiss.

HipHipWhoRay · 25/10/2025 08:05

How high is ALT? Your idea of really elevated, may not be the same as your GP.

What should it be ?

ConfusedMiddleAger83 · 25/10/2025 14:19

My ALT and GGT were elevated in bloods last month. I am also suffering from acid reflux but had only taken about 4-5 days of esomeprazole before the blood test so don’t think that could be it.

My GP was really unbothered - my bloods were taken as a full check into menopause symptoms / HRT efficacy - and she didn’t even mention it. When I did, she said it was just a sign of the liver being irritated, which could be due to a viral illness, or could be a sign of fatty liver amongst other things. She’s repeating the bloods in 3 months and told me to keep on with the weight loss as that is the main thing that will help if it is fatty liver.

My ALT level was about half of yours though, but I’d be interested to know what your Gp says.

It is worth reading up on the effects long term Omeprazole or any PPIs can have on the body. My GP casually prescribed omeprazole to me for 8 years with no further investigations or advice on how to manage my reflux.

PPIs and long term acid suppression can affect the absorption of B12, magnesium, calcium and iron, even taking supplements won't help much if you can't absorb them. Not once did my Dr suggest my symptoms could be from being deficient even with my long term PPI history - when I read about it and asked for tests they did them but still wouldn't accept my normal range total serum B12 was not a definitive test as PPIs can still cause functional B12 deficiency and they should go by my symptoms or do further tests.

Mounjaro, significant weight loss and significant diet changes mean I have thankfully come of omeprazole several months ago now and I am seeing improvements since working on resolving the deficiencies myself.

My bloods showed something gfr which should be 60 and mine is 45

but think that’s kidneys

Liverlybunchofcoconuts · 02/11/2025 11:25

Just thought I’d update and say that my level dropped significantly a week after first bloods and GP says good to continue. Thinks it may have been a blip following suspected Covid. I’m still terrified to try a Coke Zero as this set off the pain like nothing else last week but touch wood, with careful eating and omeprazole it’s gone off. I also took a week off the jabs

You don’t need to drink Coke Zero, you can avoid it..☺️

@Wildgoati know! It’s not good is it, any of the diet fizzy pop? It was something I used to enjoy but so was food ! 🤣

It's from the food sitting in your stomach for a long time. If you think about it, MJ delays gastric emptying, so you have food basically rotting in your stomach longer than it should (causing the burps etc). It's basically giving people gastroparesis. I had gastroparesis after scar tissue around my bowel slowed down digestion (a bit like what MJ does) and my ALT was sky high because of it. I felt tired, constantly poorly, aching all over etc. it's because your liver is working overtime to try and get rid of the toxins etc.

its my one big fear of using MJ !

It’s bot giving people gastroparesis, good grief, slowing digestion is very different from gastroparesis, and its symptoms and it’s hugely unlikely to habe caused fhe ops high Alt levels, millions on the drugs without the same thing, and hers relieved with the drug still in her system. I’m sorry you were unwell and are now scared but posting misinformation is not ever ok.
