I'm currently on 5mg Mounjaro and am 1kg from my goal weight. If I stay on 5mg I imagine I'll keep losing so do I go down to 2.5mg?

It's up to you - try dropping and see how you get on. Personally I had to stay at 15mg to maintain - if I drop the dose my hunger comes back and I am scared of gaining weight so I'm staying where I am.

The amount of weight you lose is only affected by how many calories you consume versus how many calories you expend. Mounjaro is delaying the emptying of your stomach so you feel fuller for longer, it’s not losing the weight for you. You can either achieve your goal weight in a shorter time by staying on your current dose and then titrating down whilst adjusting how much you eat to maintain your weight or titrate down from your current dose and achieve your goal weight over a longer period of time. You need to ensure that you’ve developed a healthy approach to your nutrition and movement levels to ensure that maintenance is possible once you have titrated down to the point where you can manage your appetite without the assistance of Mounjaro. Ultimately, whether you stay on 5mg or come down to a lower dose is personal to you and your body. There is no right or wrong way.

I've dropped from 15mg to 7.5mg and still lost 4lbs over that time and I'm bmi 23.3 9st 5.5lbs. It is all about tracking food and higher protein lower carb.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 22/10/2025 09:09

It’s entirely up to you. Can you eat more or higher calorie foods on the 5mg? If so, stick with it.

I hit goal when I was on 10mg and stayed there for another 6 weeks to try and stabilise as per a discussion with my prescriber. What actually happened is that I struggled to eat enough to keep my weight stable and so continued to lose a further 8 lbs in that time and the following 4 weeks of 7.5.

I’ve done 8 weeks on 5, am now on 3.75 and my weight is holding steady in my maintenance range with a bmi of 22.

In your case, I would stay on 5mg for now until you reach your goal weight then see if you can increase your calories at all to stabilise. If you keep losing, drop the dose.

One major thing I have learned in the last 17 months on MJ is that you can’t really have a plan. Things will fluctuate and bodies will do whatever they want to despite what you think will happen. Just go with it and see what yours wants!

I was listening to Fat Science yesterday and the doctor maintains that ‘dieting’ on a glp1 is almost counterproductive and works against the hormones trying to treat a metabolic dysfunction. It was very interesting!

It's doing some of the work for me by allowing my body to release insulin. I'm insulin resistant, I was a keto dieter and fasted for years, it stopped working. I can now eat carbs and lose weight because of the medication. Sure I eat less but I've fasted for 3 days before and not lost weight. I'm actually quite scared of coming off the medication.

It is your cals though, can you not increase them? I was in ten, maintaining at 5 for the last 6 months, but I reverse dieted, slowly increased my cals by 100 or so a week till I hit the amount I had to eat to stop losing and slowly decreasing the meds, I tend to go a little under during the week, giving me some extra for nights out and weekends, my weight as been stable for the full time.

I can relate, I’m pretty sure I was insulin resistant myself looking back so MJ has definitely rebalanced my system. I also discovered through my smart scales that my BMR (and therefore ultimately my TDEE) was way lower than I had thought so creating a deficit of 3500 cals to lose just a lb could only be achieved by upping my activity which I did consistently over the past year. I managed to lose 62lbs since last November but it has been a slog. My highest dose was 7.5mg. However, I’ve done 5mg for the past 5 weeks and started on 3.75mg this week and I’ve not really noticed a discernible difference but I have also pretty much eliminated UPFs from my diet to reduce the cravings. I also low carb, high protein as a diet which works for me. The body will plateau across any weight loss cycle, you just need to find a different way of kick starting it out of any static periods…Ultimately though you can’t cheat physics! My plan is to get down to 2.5mg and then stretch out the doses to 10 days and then 2 weeks etc. I think it’s important to go at your own body’s pace so what works for me might not be right for you.

I’m a bit confused- if I lose 1-2lbs a week on 5mg Mounjaro, would I be likely to lose more at a faster rate on 7.5mg?

You'll lose faster if you have a bigger calorie deficit. You shouldn't be aiming to lose more than 1-2lb a week though so stick with what you're doing if it's working

Is the new high pricing a factor in this? It is for me. I have 7 doses of 5mg MJ left but am transitioning to Wegovy in Dec which has already arrived. I accept my loss may be slower but looking ahead to maintenance thats what I had to decide.

This is my situation too, I'm at goal weight. I have 2 x 5mg pens left so I'm going to try 5mg every 10 days and see how that does. Then 2.5mg to see if I can maintain. A real balancing act. I'm also increasing both my exercise, and my kcal intake(by about 100). Going to tweak as I go on a weekly basis.

Definitely. I just can't afford to stay on the 5mg. I am a super responder and had really good suppression on 2.5mg.
