How did you know when to taper down?

I've been on mounjaro since July and I'm wondering when is sensible to taper down? How did you decide? I'm on the 7.5mg pen (did 5mg x2 because of shortages). I'm starting to think I don't need the higher/highest doses or long term use. Luckily no harsh side effects. Advice?

My prescriber told me to start tapering down when I get to my goal weight. I was on 15mg and im down to 7.5mg but started tapering earlier as 15mg was too strong for me when I got to bmi 25. I've lost another 5lbs since starting tapering down. I'm now bmi 23.3 59.7kg.

On 7.5mg I maintain and I lose at 10mg. I would start tapering down just before your goal weight, maybe half a stone before.

I stayed on my optimal/top dose till I hit target, 10mg, then I did an extra month in that, whilst reverse dieting, so an extra 100 or so extra cals a week, then moved to 7.5, kept increasing cals till I hit maintenance, then I moved to 5mg, and have been maintaining on 5 for the last six months, I’m staying on for ever or till something better comes along, so I went a few pounds below goal as I titrated down, and that gives me my buffer

as I increased cals slowly as I slowly decreased the meds, thr 5mg feels the exact same to me, as 10, and I feel great, all the therapeutic benefits, appetite controlled, blood sugar and insulin optimal and all the other benefits of the drugs obvs, get hungry, enjoy my meals, but don’t over eat and weight is totally stable.

I stayed on 10mg for 6 weeks after I reached goal and only moved down then because I was continuing to lose and went 10lbs under.

I wouldn’t even think to start dropping down until you reach goal and stabilise. Then take it slowly.

Absolutely especially with 17kg to go.

the thing is op, for some folks they get fooled into thinking they can do it without the drugs, but they don’t take into account what happens when you titrate down or come off, the appetite comes back and the cravings, the food noise. If you could do it without th4 drugs, why didn’t you? Most people regain when they come off as well.

id think it’s far too early for you, get to goal, then titrate down when upping your cals, and consider this a long journey,

Thanks for the responses
I guess it's a long journey haha!
So much to learn

@Charlenedickens has it spot on, I would stay on it forever if I could afford it, just for the additional benefits, I didn't start to titrate down until I hit my goal, it is hard knowing I'll have to come off, I am still losing on 2.5, to have a buffer, but it's much harder.

You don’t need to do higher doses than you need though op. If it works for you at 5 or 7.5 then stay there. Don’t move up for the sake of it, stay on whatever dose for as long as it works.

but do think you’re not even half way there yet, the reason your successfully dieting is as the drugs enable this, your blood sugar and insulin is managed, meaning no cravings, your fat is available for burning, meaning to energy slump or hunger, what this means is we can eat in a calorie deficit and lose weight successfully, without sitting thinking about the crisps or chocolate or eating larger portions than we need. Without the drugs or too low a dose and that’s very difficult, and impossible for most of us.

do also think of this as long term, the rest of your life. Because getting to target is just the first step in a long journey, you also need to during that journey consider muscle and eat enough protein and work out, strength train, this is key, as otherwise it’s muscle you’re losing not just fat. And you won’t like what you see in the mirror when you hit target.

once you hit goal you need to focus on building muscle, as it is difficult to do in a deficit, during weight loss you’re focused on maintaining muscle and fat loss, and then when your happy with your body, you need to focus on maintaining, maintaining your body fat percentage, your weight and your muscle mass. For ever.

right now you’re on the first step of your journey, weight loss,

I’ve seen a lot of people on line who think wow I’m successfully dieting, go me, the weight is coming off, I don’t need the drugs, not understanding it’s the drugs that is enabling that, it’s the whole point of them, and then coming off and either regaining immediately or struggling as the hunger returns, the cravings return, and their bodies return to what they were pre drugs, because no drug works when you don’t take it.

good luck x
